I love all of these comments! I am American of Italian descent. It’s been a very long time since I’ve been to Italy (we’re from Abruzzo) and I loved it. I gave you all a thumbs up. Too funny but I totally agree!
People who enjoy Walmart should stay where Walmart is. My relative lives in a picturesque southern town in NC and the only place to go all day long is Walmart 😅 . In their Walmart they sell guns next to children’s toys 🫤 People have lovely houses with gardens and porches, but hardly anyone sits out on the porch. Nobody talks to anyone. My relative lives there about 15 years and never spoke to her next door neighbor. It’s strange. No wonder everyone is so angry, depressed and anti-social. It’s a bit different up north.
@@dianamartin9558 so... clickbait title? I am always amused with expats (80% being Americans) that are stunned with "culture" shock when things are different than their bubble across the world. I'm surprised the electrical outlets weren't on the culture shock list
Sir...everybody knows this!!! I have been to Italy and I like that they are not stressed because they all take lunch simultaneously...THAT'S Italy!! It's not America!! Any place outside of America will be different...these 10 problems aren't really problems...you have to adjust to their way of living...come on now...your southern people...I'm from New York and I'm quite sure you wouldn't be able to live in New York cause it's different...I'm quite sure I would never adjust to a Southern lifestyle cause I'm from New York!!! Now being that I'm from New York I'm quite sure I would fit in perfectly in Italy...I hope that you will find your place and your peace
OMG I couldn't have said it better!!! They expect it to be like the South of USA! Incredible. Do you homework before you move anywhere people!! I'm from NY also and would not be able to ever adjust to southern living. Totally different. These are the stupidest reasons for not wanting to stay.
Seriously????? Why did you go there in the first place????? If you want things to be like in America, maybe you should have stayed in America……..no sympathy!!!!!
Sadly enough, you’re correct. Please realize that these two are not a reflection of most Americans. Just the Midwest closed minded, un adaptable part of America. There are plenty of Europeans like that as well, I’m sure.
@@danielmacrini1205 watch our next video. We were not complaining. It was to let people from the US know things that are different than they are used to. We are not the typical American and that's why we left America and live full time in Sicily.
You are in THEIR country so if anyone wants to live there you have to adjust to their way of living. Here in the US there are so many immigrants moving in and alot of them don't speak English. Learn the language if you want to live in another country. Also, when you go out to eat, the waiters are there to serve you delicious food not to chit chat with you. Sheesh
1 No, Sicily is not Walmart. 2 You don't go to Italy to drink Coke, come on... 3 Is the tipping issue a complaint? Italy doesn't have a tipping culture because they actually pay their employees. 4 The 'thank you' thing is also because in Italy, people like to say more than just 'thanks'-it's called socializing :) 5 Are you complaining about how people dress? I live in the USA, and I don't think fashion is a strong suit. 6 About English... last year I went to Portugal (Lagos) and hardly anyone spoke Portuguese. It didn't feel authentic. This is a good limiting factor to keep places original. Sorry, but it feels like you want to live in the USA while being in Italy. Learn some Italian, socialize with locals, people is one of the best thing that Italy has, and enjoy!
I would have also enjoyed a video about 10 things you really liked about Sicily. Also, were you able to connect with any other ex-pats living there to help navigate the cultural differences?
I've been to Italy many times. While there are things to adjust to, it is such a lovely, and wonderful country. The people are so kind. Many of the things we become accustomed to here in the US are not really good/healthy for us. Americans are a consumer driven society, and Italy is an experience based society. They are family/friend oriented. Don't dwell on little things that bother you. The overall experience is gold!
And...what is the real problem here? Its all about the restaurants. You can also make your meal at home and eat whenever you want. Oh yes, and in Sicily they speak Italian 😂 and no refills...
All good points about Sicilian culture. Yes, it is different but for me I roll with it and mostly can adjust and have adjusted. My wife being from Sicily helps us adjust and explains why things are the way they are so we understand. Language is a most, learn Italian. My daughter and I take classes (in-person) 2-3 times a week. My daughter is so much quicker than I in picking up the language. As for the rest of the culture shock, I am not bothered and just enjoy life on the island. Best of luck in whatever new adventure awaits you.
ok the shops close for lunch and reopen at 4, but then close at 9, while when I was in the USA the shops close at 6. in the south you have late dinner, but it's not a problem, try having a spritz at 7 and then go to dinner at 10
I’m sorry but in Europe most places close for about 2 to 3 hours for lunch, then come back another 3 or 4 hours. When moving to another location one needs to adjust. Maybe you should if rented for a few months to see if you could handle the changes.
@@nuffsaid783 exactly! We know the reasons and appreciate their culture. That’s many of the reasons we are making it our home. The culture shocks are reasons we are leaving… that was to get views. The love the culture and all the things we mentioned.
Why some nasty comments? I think they're just sharing their thoughts, after all, we all look at things differently so it would always be nice to be respectful. I live and work in Rome Italy for 20 odd years now, and thinking of moving outside the city. I'm blessed to have started in the capital where the north and the south meets. And tho I'm now like one of them, Italians, I search and still try to learn what is life like where I should move and importantly, the people I'll be around with because cultures and traits may still be different even being a one country just like any other countries where people, climate, food etc can be different. Southern Italy is agricultural and the North is Industrial and yes, have different cultures. Southern culture has a Greek and North African influence while North is influenced fron Central and Northern Europe. I must say the people in the South are much friendlier and life is at a slower pace while in the North they are more business-like. Moving, especially to another country takes a lot of preparations, mentally and physically. There's nothing wrong to keep moving around (if you can afford it, why not) till where you can call home. Who knows......nothing beats ""home sweet home" . Wishing you both well!
Why do people buy here instead of renting first for at least a year and through the good and bad weather? The language? Why should anyone here speak English? The pausa? All the things you complain about are what makes living here worth it , regardless of some of the problems. I did not move to southern Italy to speak English or have the same as USA . Over 21 yrs here and maybe it was better when there was less internet, no google translate and no expat clusters. You learned the language and assimilated. I will agree with the weather (due to climate change, it used to be wonderful). Now it is better to escape luglio e agosto.
Thank you for confirming many reasons that I want to move to Sicily! I live in Florida now and I absolutely love the humidity. Even many of the people here don’t love it, but I do. I don’t drink soda, only water. I’m aware of the ice factor from traveling to Europe, many times, and that’s ok. On the other hand, I was educated when you mentioned not putting your dishes together for them or saying thank you so much, so that was helpful. Slowing down and expecting the slow pace and the bureaucracy of this slow pace will be an adjustment (according to other videos) but will be worth it when I’m settled and can enjoy the slow pace. Looking forward to not dealing with the U.S. expectation of not having a fast pace and anger of people here. It is all the reason I want to leave the states, to slow down. I love learning languages, so I’m looking forward to that. Again, I’m thankful for this video to confirm so many reasons to move there! 🙏
I am going to subscribe to see where you are heading since you mentioned close to Greece from someone else’s comment. I’m still open to exploring other areas.
Thank you for sharing your experience in Sicily so far. Cultural differences can be good sometimes. Enjoy your travels and we will be watching and hoping for your success!
You guys are killing me, hahahaha!! That is the most bizarre video I have ever watched! What you call 'culture shocks'.... Oh my..... No refills? are you serious? people in Italy speak only Italian? Darn.... I wonder why do they not speak American English? The shops are closed during certain times, it's what you call adjust to their system, I had to do the same moving to the USA from Belgium. Anyway, at least you both made me laugh through the whole video, it's just hilarious! 🤣🤣🤣
@lifeatthefino2793 thanks for watching. We hope to be entertaining. It wasn’t a video on 10 reasons we are leaving Sicily. It was just culture shocks for our American watchers. We put out a new video to clarify. We love Sicily and none of those things bother us.
@@dianamartin9558 I saw the new video, it explained everything! Thank you! Enjoy your time on the beautiful island, we also will be in Sicily for a month part of september and october.
The whole point of traveling is experiencing new and different things. However, constantly making adjustments gets tiring, So staying in one place is helpful with traveller fatigue. You both seem like good people--best of luck with your travels forward. Try to emphasize what is positive about where you go and bring up negatives when they are really things that are bad or dangerous.
You don't touch fruit because you press your finger into the pulp and ruin the fruit or veg. I can only say one thing when people go abroad and come out with a list of complains. STAY IN YOUR COUNTRY and enjoy your culture. You need to be open minded to travel and not all people are able to do so. That's wy when we teach langages in school we must teach the culture and embrace the diversity with our own culture so you will understand others.
Wait .... don't most households keep a stock of at least TWO rolls of toilet paper? Why would you need to dash to a store to buy toilet paper? I keep a stock of about 20 rolls. Thanks for your honest opinions, they are always the best.
@CharlesWhite-j4f well most people do…. But most Americans think stores are open 24/7. These shocks were for them. The only thing open in our home town in Sicily on a Sunday afternoon are bars and restaurants. I love our town and our friends. It’s a great community.

I have been living here in Sicily for the past 20 years I used to live in Florida and New York. Sicily motto is “The beauty of doing nothing” and that is the island way of living. Taking it easy and enjoying life as much as you can, enjoying your family and doing nothing. I think you perhaps are in the wrong town, area of Sicily for your needs or maybe you just needed this check up to realize the grass was greener where you came from.
It’s not. If you’ve been to the US, there are folks who depend on Walmart 😬 They don’t care about street life, piazzas, art, architecture, kids running around freely … the stuff of life. They want their airconditioned Walmart to walk and enjoy!

Cool! Sorry, but it’s a lifestyle vlog, is anyone watching that super carefully?! US marketing tactics are never much appreciated in Europe, as you probably found out 😬 Good luck!
Things are somehow different here. But there is no cultural shock, only changes in daily life. And you have to be patient. Just take your time and enjoy! But this is just the point, why Sicily is so lovely . There is no better place to be. Only the health support is a problem.....If you are an elderly person, you should have means to be treated in the north of Italy or abroad....
Late dinner was born from the noble habits of dining late because of the night parties... You wake up late... You have a late lunch and a late dinner... In some European countries even the terms breakfast, lunch and dinner began to take on similar meanings for this very reason and were used interchangeably to indicate lunch or dinner.

I find the USA huge amount of ice for each drink a shock. I'm from UK so I'm not used to it. Is that everywhere in USA or just the hot parts? I didn't find any of the things you mentioned a culture shock (being from 'Europe' so maybe its just a shock for folks from USA). I think people don't always understand that it is a big culture shock for anyone coming from the States. It's a big deal to travel from so far away to a new culture. Those of use closer to Europe will have been visiting hot European countries for many years, often since we were young, so its not a shock for us. If anyone is till reading this the quickest and best way to learn spoken italian, pronounced correctly (coz if you pronounce those vowels slightly differently they won't understand you) is Earworms. Earworms Learning is set to rhythm and music and sticks in your musical brain and stays there.
Just doubled across your channel, thank you for being transparent and being helpful with everything, my wife and I are visiting the Florence area in September and I’ve also considered relocating Italy, but not Sicily but who knows ?…but either way your insight is very helpful, and yes, grown up in America and relocating to such a place is definitely going to be a bit of a culture shock even if you’re in the north a bit..

Pretty accurate. I quite like the way the Italians are about been too polite. They find it annoying as you say, it's there job. Regards to tipping yeah, when I have been to the US it's really hard to give something extra when you have already received the bill. But that is US culture you have to accept it when you are there. And 20% well it was 10% max in the US in the 1990's. I 1st went to Sicily in the mid 90's Palermo was a no go area, completely over run by the Costa Nostra, I then went back in 2004 and things had improved a lot thanks to the Mayor and then back again for the 3rd time in 2018 and Palermo was a reborn city the port was a dump and now people go for runs, cafes, restaurants, boats totally a transformation. Palermo seems much safer and like a culture melting pot for the size. Sicily has really improved a lot since my 1st trip. A lot of the Mafia has gone now. I was especially impressed with Noto, Syracuse completely transformed, big money injection from the North of Italy is my guess. I am from the UK. Cheers.

@edzukich if it’s warranted we might. But we came here realizing that it’s on their time. Things in this country work differently than in the US. We are acclimating to the new culture.
Before you decided to go Sicilia, did you spend time there before moving? In Italy forever, many fruit and vegetable sellers do not want their customers to handle the produce. Sicilia is extremely hot, even before the climate change, it can be extremely hot even in October. Up on the Etna, it snows. As far as the stores, years ago all the stores were closed on Sundays (by the way , it used to be like this in the US). If one stayed open on Sunday, you had to close one day during the week. Eating late is par for the course in hot climates (ergo Brazil). More often than not, people eat later, because many do not have air conditioners. It is too hot to cook, and if they have a terrace, they eat outside. The please and thank yous are not warranted, because they consider it their job. Why does it bother you that they don't rush you out. They do not expect that the table will have two or three covers a night. In fact, when you order a bottle of wine, the waiter opens it, and then you serve yourself. If you go to a fine dining restaurant in the US, they will also change the silverware after each course. Words to the wise: learn at least Italian for Travelers. Don't expect people to understand and speak English. Also, Italians hate to make mistakes when they speak, even though most people learn English. Unfortunately, Italy may not be for you, peccato.

In their Walmart they sell guns next to children’s toys 🫤 People have lovely houses with gardens and porches, but hardly anyone sits out on the porch. Nobody talks to anyone. @@dianamartin9558 Good; you had me worried there for a bit--I didn't want a 'merican invasion of Sicily; once was enough.
Good luck in all that you do…
@@nic6208 thank you
WELL DONE GUY NICE RELAXED DO YOU EVER GET MAD /?
@@patriciasandler1562 we never said these were things we didn't like. Only giving people from the US examples of things that they may find different. We've been to Italy several times. We own a house in Sicily and are going to live there full time. We love everything about Sicily. Please watch our next video to explain.
@@theSicilyAdventure Sorry for the mistake. I got the impression that you were totally dissatisfied with life in Sicily. We are Italian citizens and we are always there, but do not live there full-time , because of our age.
You ever hear the term "When in Rome"
@@smarangolo1234 yes. Thats basically what the video is about. To let people know what to expect. They were not complaints. We love everything Sicily.
@smarangola1234 maybe watch our follow up video. We love Sicily and plan on moving there full time when our house is done. Stay tuned to watch videos of our renovations and the adventures we find around Sicily. I think you will change your mind😊
😂👍👌🙌
It is not absolutely shock. You are in a different country and their culture is different. The whole purpose of visiting a place/country is to experience the difference not to complain.
@@BC-ky7ps we were not complaining. Simply telling Americans what they can expect.
@BC-ky7ps hi this diana, joes wife, and we aren’t just visiting.., we are renovating a house. We have sold everything and are planning on living in Sicily full time. Sorry if you thought because we titled it the way we did we are leaving. Please watch our follow up video for more information. Thanks for watching!
Wow the American hate is real lol! Most of us Americans haven't had the time or money to travel the world and we appreciate UA-camrs who are brave enough to share their experience. America is also a melting pot so in our country we have the unique opportunity to come into contact with a variety of cultures so some never feel the need to move. We have been in a bubble but social media has helped many Americans to think outside of the box and yes many of us will experience culture shock when we leave that bubble suprise suprise. The ignorance and hate in the comments is telling. You really can't speak in general of any nationality of people because we are all individuals... especially Americans because we come from so many different backgrounds. So to say Americans are dumb, Americans are whiny....seems like you have chosen to associate with an annoying group of Americans lol! Choose your American friends better and be kind or stop judging a whole country based on what you've seen in the movies.
@@uncommon1170 thanks for watching and the comment. Thanks for understanding our intent. We were simply trying to describe things Americans would find different. I didn't think we were complaining but some thought we were.
@theSicilyAdventure Thank you both for being candid. I found this video to be helpful. I've watched several videos about the pros of living in Sicily and it's helpful to hear your take on what you experienced.
What? No coke fountains is a problem?🙄
@lisaarezzi8274 we didn’t say the shocks were for us. They are for people that have never been to Sicily. We love Sicily and weren’t complaining. It was just a UA-cam hack to get views. If you love Sicily and want to watch videos about our house renovations, subscribe.
Americani😂 Next Holidays in Northern Italy Piemonte, Lombardia or Emilia-Romagna. That's next level culture shock and much more culture than in any american place.
interesting to hear all these things you point out that are not in your comfort zone. So many people make the move to Italy for every reason you have listed as a negative. So sad you are having to experience these 10 things on your list as I am watching your beautiful background as your are making this video. Feels like maybe you should retire back to Minnesota where your are comfort with your surroundings and hair and food times , dress code and shopping. ..and ice and refills for your coke.
@BethLowry-o9n we never said those 10 things were why we were leaving. Did we seem mad or upset? No. It’s because they’re shocks for people who haven’t been to Sicily. We love Sicily. Those 10 things are why we have moved there. We do not miss the US or Missouri!!!!!! Hope you keep watching for more videos when we can go back after our Schengen shuffle.
Sicily is too much Italy for newcomers. Maybe start in Perugia, Firenze, Santa Maria degli Angeli etc; once you get comfortable with everything then try Sicily
@@guypierce6323 we own a house in Sicily
@@theSicilyAdventure Well what you have experienced can only be described as a deep dive into Italy. I can only imagine the stories you have to tell 🙂
Here are the 10 reasons why I am leaving France!
1. French don't tip.
2. No free refill for wine.
3. Restaurants charge for tap water.
4. Their clothes feel tight and unfashionable
5. Their buildings are old and crumbling.
6. Their food tastes funny.
7. Houses have no air-conditioning
8. Need to say " Bon Jour" to everyone even in Macdonalds
9. Personal hygiene is not up to U.S standards.
10. Everybody smokes. Even women and underage.
Can I get likes from you, please?
@dollymadeson3963 Thank you for this breakdown. ❤
I am wondering why you left America in the first place? No where is going to be like it! same as nowhere is going to be like France, Italy UK. Travel is all about experiencing other cultures my friend.
@@irenegodfrey7704 we were just letting people from the US, that have not been to europe, know some differences they will find. We never said these are things we don't like. Please watch our next video to explain.
@irenegodfrey7704 Joe and I we love Sicily. Please watch our other videos that explain why we are moving by there. Joes family is from Sicily, we bought a house and it’s being renovated. Those were not reasons we are leaving, it was to get views. Those were for Americans that haven’t been to Sicily. We love those culture shocks!! It’s why we are moving out of the US. Hope you keep watching.
I don’t get it - you enjoy being rushed out of the restaurant??? You actually like the waiter interrupting your conversation every several minutes with cheesy offers of this and that?! The service in America is precisely why I don’t enjoy going to the restaurants there!
@@SculptExpress-gv8jp no we don't enjoy restaurants in US. this was merely things people from America will find different. They were not complaints. They are the things we love about Italy but things people coming for the first time will find different.
😂😂😂😂😂😂Ridiculous....
Every time I see an American talking about culture shock, I see somebody that never traveled. Even inside America you can feel culture shocks. This is what happens when you live in a bubble all your life.
@@carlosalbuquerque5672 that was the point. Telling people that haven't traveled before what they can expect so they are not as shocked when they come.
@carlosalbuquerque5672 you got our exact point. So many Americans are living in a bubble. The media and government has scared people to believe that it isn’t safe to travel overseas. These weren’t culture shocks for us. We have traveled extensively. The video was for our American viewers. Watch our follow up video for more clarity. We love Sicily and will be back after our required Schengen period🤪😂😂😂 so many people don’t get UA-camrs make these kind of videos to up their subscribers and views.
