I made 2 rings and a bracelet using a hacksaw, an old kitchen knife with a sharp tip, and about 90 hours of sandpaper in awkward positions. It takes time and patience, I intentionally left a little bit of meat in there for strength purposes and to make a statement. Meticulous but definitely worth the time and effort.
Beautiful ring James! I made my fiancé a promise ring out of walnut a few years ago. I didn’t stabilize it, only used a penetrating epoxy and it only lasted a few months sadly. Then I learned how to silversmith to make her an engagement ring with our raw birthstones set in silver.
That's a cool project James. I like how you described this as something you've been thinking about for years. I find it funny how our brains work to solve challenges over time. Thanks for letting us into your workshop. Scott
I missed this one earlier. Melody helping you remove your stuck finger in the wood - classic! The look on her face was ... been here before... 🤣😂😳. Glad no blood! Great video James & Melody!!
I love watching you hand make the ring - no power tools - but I do use files differently to you... but I'm happy we all work differently other wise we would all be clones!! - keep up the hard work and keeping the tradition going!
@@tbrocato143 Sorry I do not generally sell what I make. Though I have thought of selling these once I Change up a few things. We will see where the future goes.
Bro this is amazing! Congrats! After watching this video I attepted to make one with even less tools, I do not have any but a driller and it came out perfect! I'm so happy! I've finished it yesterday and I did not bake it. I used pine tree wood. Thank you so much!
Turned out great You could also try making them with layers of veneer too Looks like the old saying rings true a little helper is priceless Thank you for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Lots of filing & polishing, but really, really beautiful effect! Excellent anniversary present as well! I presume it will stay "stable", maybe you'd have only to rebuff it from time to time. Have you tried to use vaseline or some oil, to free your stuck finger? My little helper is probably in the same age :) You'd see her with brace & augers: my poor Workmate top :) Good parenting & making funny memories :)
I made a wood ring, but just like you I got my finger stuck in the test fit. I tried everything I could without breaking it to get out and nothing worked. Now unlike you, I don't have a second person to help out, so I cut a groove into the wood, propped the chisel up inside it, and tapped it with a light mallet. I made sure the chisel wasn't aimed at my finger, and that I would tap softly, but even with my precautions, I still cut my finger pretty bad. I didn't get stitches, but it was right at the depth that I debated whether or not I should. So to anyone test fitting wood rings, seriously have a second person, or just don't do the test fit I did super glue the piece I was trapped in back together and finished the ring. Figured I shouldn't let that blood stain go to waste
This was fantastic! Maybe for your next one you could glue some veneers of different color wood together before starting the cutting & carving process to give the ring a patten of different shades?
You can use copper pipe in the ring. Get a piece close to your ring size and stretch it for a good fit. Then press it into the wood, add a little ca glue and polish it real good. It'll and strength and make it easier to put on and take off.
Still laughing with your stuck finger , but you are a lucky men cause your assistant is experienced ! You could say that it was almost a theatrical video . Great beautiful project !!!!! I would love to see a bracelet from you !!!!!!!!!!!!
It's actually a vacuum pot that will stabilize it with resin. The white stuff you see afterwards is the resin that it was soaked in. I have a whole video on stabilization if you want to see that.
I have a whole video on that ( ua-cam.com/video/Z2jEdjYEd1M/v-deo.html ), and I talk about it more in the how to version of the video. I was not going to include that as it was done over a year ago. but then thought it would be good to see the history of the block of wood.
It depends completely on a lot of different variables. They'll go anywhere from 20 to $30 up to a few thousand. All depends on what they're made of what they look like and your brand.
Cool! I got a bentwood ring for my wedding band for that reason, but I hadn't seen the stabilization method before. Maybe you could try a bentwood ring from shavings, all hand tool project, haha.
On regarde les mêmes sources d'inspiration sur internet, j'ai déjà fait ce genre de bague, tu peux aussi alterner les couleurs en biais ou droit avec du pin et du chêne par exemple ;)
The one tool missing in your stuff is that Vacuum tank/system... Por Que? In other words, Why'd ya skip any info on it here? In particular it has a sufficient tank with what appears to be silicone seal and a clear top, Much better than clamping styles ...IMO.
I was surprised to see you chiselling your finger from the hole. You can usually release your finger from any ring or hole you can insert it into. Just rub the skin on the finger from the ring or hole towards the hand while gently pulling. I looked for a video on UA-cam demonstrating this but couldn't find one so I have added one myself.
I tried that and the Flo's trick and vasaleen but with the friction of the rough wood this was a last resort after trying several other methouds. I did however make sure to aim away from the finger even though the video shows it almost going straight at the finger.
I didn't boil it. It is in a vacuum pot so the air is sucked out. I just kept sucking until the volume was low enough. And then waited until the bubbles were all but done.
They are incredibly comfortable as they are carved specifically to match your foot. On top of that they're protective. And I can slide them on and off quickly when I leave and enter the shop. Wear them every single day.
@@photobooth541 just would. If they're carved exactly to match your foot then there is no need for padding as you have even pressure on all sides of your feet. I can stand in these on concrete all day long but with my normal running shoes I can only handle about four or so hours of it.
I have one but that footage was from over a year ago. the piece fore this was pulled out of the scrap pile so I thought I would pull up the old footage.
Lol I used to do it with a reverse bike pump they would take about 15 minutes to fully draw the vacuum but then I threw in the hand towel and just got pump lol
LOL I was wondering about putting those clips in there as the vacuum pump was for another project a year ago. I just grabbed the scrap out of the scrap pile then thought I should show that as it's backstory. but the vacuum pump did none of the cutting.

Best shop assistant!
Is there a video or explanation on the stabilizing process? Never seen this so I’d like to understand it more.
Here you go. ua-cam.com/video/Z2jEdjYEd1M/v-deo.html
The oils present on you hands will protect the ring. Soap during washing will be an issue. Nice project.
That is also a reason for stabilization. I wear this one in the pool.
you can make them smaller and thinner if you place a stainless steel liner made from tubing inside before cutting the outer shape : )
That is one of the ideas for the next one. I'm also thinking about doing a horizontal line. So many fun different ways of doing it.
What all went into the stabilization of the wood. Skipped right through that process. Nice ring

What was the purpose of soaking it in a vacuum then heating it? Sorry, but I haven't seen that technique before

Hi,
NIce work. Little question: What kind of product do you use at the end? Greets and keep up the nice work
That is Yorkshire grit. a lot of turners use it to do the final polish.
I always figured I'd take a piece of heartwood and knock out the pith and use the rings as rings.
Beautiful ring. How long did it take to carve it?
Thanks. it tool a bit over an hour to do.
Very nice, but looks tedious. What if you used a human powered lathe to help with the shaping?
I could. but I have a spring pole lathe so no way to attach it.
Ring stuck on finger. God. I love the cabaret.
LOL I had to include that in the video!
I know what I'm going to attempt when I get home...
If I made some. What is a good price for a ring. To sell
It depends completely on a lot of different variables. They'll go anywhere from 20 to $30 up to a few thousand. All depends on what they're made of what they look like and your brand.
Will the stabilization help with the tendency to break along the thin end grain on both ends? I was really worried when you dropped it....
yes that will help especially with an open grain like oak.
What cream did he used to make ring shine?
That is a product called Yorkshire paste. It's a polishing compound that breaks down as you use it getting finer and finer than more at buffs in.
Beautiful result though if I try it out I think I'll skip the get your finger stuck and have one of the kids chisel it out step. Cheers!
What? That's the fun part
The one tool missing in your stuff is that Vacuum tank/system... Por Que? In other words, Why'd ya skip any info on it here? In particular it has a sufficient tank with what appears to be silicone seal and a clear top, Much better than clamping styles ...IMO.
Oops - my bad -- I went to your link on stabilizing wood and found it ALL. Sorry.
Not a problem. The ones with clamp on style are pressure pots not vacume Chambers. They do the Oposit.
I was surprised to see you chiselling your finger from the hole. You can usually release your finger from any ring or hole you can insert it into. The tools in the video?
To misquote Eliza Doolittle. "Oh wooden, it be loverly." ;)
LOL I like it!

I didn't boil it. It is in a vacuum pot so the air is sucked out. I just kept sucking until the volume was low enough. And then waited until the bubbles were all but done.
