    Good to see your return. 🙂
    This track gives me hope for a stellar album.
    Sounds like you've been busy. Good luck with everything you're involved in. ❤

    Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull is in the backing spoken words in the first lines “draped in death..etc” and his daughter Mirjam Åkerfeldt is doing the ghostly spoken words at the end ✌🏽

    Draped in death the howl of lore, I take to mean “clothed with death comes the abrupt/shock of history” basically a poetic way of saying now that someone has died, their bones in their closet comes out roaring/rumbling for all to see.

    Welcome back Luke. They've got a new drummer and he's just as skilled as the last two drummers (Martin Lopez and Martin Axenrot). It's also their first concept album since Still Life (1999). This song is so dark and eerie. It's post WW1 and tells the story about the will of a deceased conservative patriarch which reveals many shocking secrets. Each song (§1 through §8) is basically using each section of the will as lyrics. Can't wait to hear the full album.

    Yeah he hasn't growled on record for many years. Also it is a new drummer! And he's killing it.

    Welcome back and congrats on the new property! I remember you wanting a more direct, album-wide story from Opeth - seems like you'll get your wish here. Which also means the "sections" probably don't work that well as their own songs, though -- this seems like the kind of thing that makes more sense listening to the whole record. Song structure... not really a thing in §1, haha. It does feel like a long intro. Can't help but think you should do a full-album reaction if you find the time - you are the right man to analyze someone's will.

      We'll see if I can do it! Even if it ends up being one song at a time. 😅

    I'm glad you're back 🙂
    I've heard the album is inspired by "Succession", perhaps it's a horror version of the show 😅

    Frederick released a video very recently where he refers to the song as "Paragraph 1" so you were on the right track.

    • @larslindstrom2112

      In Sweden we use "paragraph" instead of "section" in any type of legal of regulatory documents. Same meaning though.

    • @StunDamage
      @StunDamage 4 місяці тому

      It's "paragraph" in Bulgaria, too, so probably more of a general European thing than specifically Swedish. That being said, the English word "paragraph" tends to mean "the block of sentences before you hit enter on the keyboard", which does create some confusion with the legal term. I think native English speakers are better off calling the § a "section".

      Okay yeah, makes sense. I'm reading up on this and it looks like the US just uses different phrasing for this, but that's to be expected I suppose...

  • @butterfliesandmoths
    @butterfliesandmoths 4 місяці тому +2

    I was also unsure (to my defense I got confused by other Americans xD), but according to guitarist Fredrik Åkesson it's meant to be read as Paragraph One :) ... And yes, Åkerfeldt haven't growled on a record since 2008, so that's a welcomed ingredient for the progressive elements.

      Super cool--I wonder why he returned to the growling!

      @@RightManWrongPlace He said that he wanted to when people had stopped caring xD Which is now. I also think some of the other members have whispered in his ear. He doesnt listen to death anymore, but writes it instead. That's kinda neat. But the strongest fanbase is from their older stuff, so Im glad they're going back to their roots. But I wounder if that plays a role or not, they have always done whatever they feel like....I mean, they released a record in Swedish....you cant really care much about money and pleasing people if you do that 😆

      @@butterfliesandmothsgood write up. I think it’s something that real artists do, basically reinvent themselves and try something different to keep their passion fresh. He had an itch for going towards a new direction after watershed, meddled in it for a while, enjoyed it, and took many elements from it. Now he comes full circle, not rehashing his old sound but rather making a new sound with old and new incorporations. I’m all for it.

      @@soakedbearrd I just want to add that after Watershed, Åkerfelt was writing on an heavy album, kind of like "watershed II". But I believe it was Mendez (not sure) who told him that perhaps he was done with Watershed and should move in a different direction now. So he threw that away and started fresh. That felt like a liberation for Åkerfelt, and they wrote "Herritage" (2011). And as previous speaker pointed out, now they're back to incorporate those different branches that followed with their earlier influences. The circle is complete. It's kind of natural when you think about it :)

    Great minute or 2 then the cringe singing starts. I honestly don't think Opeth will ever write another good song again. It has been over 15 years now. I think it's time I accept it. Opeth sucks now

      I disagree, but at the same time kinda see the point. Mikael is doing some pretty theatrical vibratos here, in a way he hasn't done before. To me, it fits the vibe, but I can imagine how it will sound silly to some people. Probably a love-hate thing.
