I think Qui-Gon knew the entire time. The Queen is also smirking when she sends Padme to clean R2 :)

You’re on the money about Sabe. Wookiepedia has her under bisexual and uses this book as direct reference material

11:27 I specifically remember that the big twist that Padme was the queen was messed up by the marketing for the movie. I saw a bag of chips that said "Padme Amidala" with a picture of her BEFORE the movie came out. Then I saw the movie, and there were two characters, Padme and Queen Amidala. I remember being confused as the movie was going because I was like, "Is she the queen or not?" and then it turned out she was. I think I wouldn't have predicted it if it wasn't for the marketing spoiling it. That was a common problem in movies in the late '90s and early 2000s. Movie trailers would summarize the plot of the whole movie up until like the last ten minutes, and by then it's predictable what's going to happen. It wasn't until the '10s that the tactic of misleading trailers became the norm. It still irks me to this day that they put Elizabeth's cute line in Pirates of the Caribbean "Do you like pain? Try wearing a corset." in the trailer because it totally spoiled that moment in the movie. And it should have had more meaning in the movie because she had an earlier scene where she passed out from the pain of wearing a corset. (And yes, I'm thinking of that movie specifically because Kiera Knightley played Sabe.)

I know the Clone Wars implied that Clovis and Padme dated in the early days of their Senate careers. I'm thinking the author decided to interpret that as to the outside world, it looked like they were dating, but behind closed doors it was professional and platonic except for Clovis having a huge crush on Padme that she did not reciprocate. But I laughed a lot as I was reading this book because it was so obvious that the author does NOT like Clovis. She trash talked him SO much. Like how he approached his role as Senator like a total nube, and he wore his heart on his sleeve. Contrast that with how Padme and her team jumped into the Senate playing political games and hiding her true self from the beginning. And when he organized a relief mission, he didn't filled the ship from floor to ceiling with supplies, which irked Padme because she felt they could have brought A LOT more supplies if he had made the effort to completely fill the cargo bay and line the hallways with supplies. (When she was placed in charge of a later mission, she made sure every nook and cranny of the ship was crammed with supplies.)
The author interpreted Clovis to be a complete idiot, and while he was stupid in some ways in The Clone Wars (he managed to get himself into sticky situations because he owed favors to some really bad people), I think she exaggerated it because I had a hard time believing that someone would be able get to the galactic political stage if he was that incompetent. Although, it's certainly true that art imitates life. There have been some truly terrifying morons in Congress since forever. But I don't think Clovis was that incompetent. He was duped the same way Palpatine managed to dupe the entire galaxy.
