This reminds me of a few, of my projects to upgrade the only desktop computer in my collection that, I call my "baby". Which, is a glossy white 20-inch G5 iMac. Apple, Inc. designed these desktops, just like the 15-inch G4 iMac highlighted in this video to be fully serviced by the average home user. Plus to keep the initial purchase price down, the base units would be shipped with low levels of RAM and no "Airport" cards. Over the past 20-years, I have replaced or upgraded many of the components of this computer including the Hard Drive, RAM, Airport Card, and motherboard. But, I still use it daily as my back-up desktop system (smile...smile).

Really glad to hear you still use it as a backup system!

I’m sure that extra RAM will help out a lot! Nice to see the Airport card was also easy to install. I’ve tried out older Airport cards and I have gotten them to work, but I set up an Airport Express as a dedicated network with older compatibility.

      Yeah it should do!
I think I may have to do the same with my network setup too- I also have an airport base station. :-)

Thank you, for sharing this project to upgrade your white 15-inch G4 iMac desktop. Question, are you using the correct "Airport" card for a G4 system? The first generation "Airport" card's work with G3 desktop and laptop systems. Afterward, Apple, Inc. made a new "Airport Extreme" card which, is required for my glossy white 20-inch G5 iMac desktop. I own the first black and white G3 Powebook the Pismo model that supported an internal "Airport" card (1st generation) and, it can connect only to wifi systems that support a very old standard. However, to my surprise many years ago when, my company created a free public wifi network ... it still supports this 25-year old standard (smile...smile).

      Thanks for the info!
I believe I’m using the correct card, but sill make sure to double check this!
I always love reading your stories and info about your machine.
      Have a great day :-)

256 MB is tough. I don’t think I owned a machine and booted with less than 512. Does your router support 802.11b? Sometimes you need to enable that.

Yeah the quarter-gig is shite, hopefully the 512 helps. I definitely want to max it out. I’ll check out the router settings, thanks for the tip!
