You're deep in a deserted forest, miles and miles from the front. You're at the bottom of a small ravine, hemmed in by dense trees. You have your service rifle, rations, your standard-issue gear. You've constructed a small lean-to at the bottom of this gully with a camo tarp that can't be seen from outside, and given the tree canopy, is extremely difficult to make from the air as well. It's nearing nightfall, but you don't dare risk a fire. So you lay back against your rucksack under the tarp, rifle at the ready, and simply listen to the sounds of battle as you attempt to drift off to sleep.
In my honest humble opinion! You would not want to be @ the bottom of some small ravine. Hemmed in by dense trees! It’s a recipe for not only failure. But also disaster, in that type of set up! High ground helps you hold things down! I would not want to be getting shot @! While worrying about trees falling down on top of me! From all the grenades & RPG’s being launched! Remember that movie “THE ROCK” (bathroom scene) high ground! Movie Saving Private Ryan (brick wall falls down) scene! All them Germans surprised. Gun stand off, HIGH ground! Helps you hold things down!
@@PowerofPlacebo My imaginary scenario takes place in a remote region far from the front, basically unwatched and unpopulated. The objective is to lay low and keep things that way. :-)

@r_ elentless01 my dad was in the recruiter in the navy I don't care about girls on the ship I just want to serve my country, get shit done and be on my merry way back to Texas. So yes I know what am I doing. I don't care if I'm apart of the guard all I know is I didn't want to become a professional bullet stoper as how my father said it. And if it's the coast guard forget they hardly go far out to sea. Edit: Sorry my father tells the truth and I seen the advantages he has because of the navy.

I cant sleep without the sound, even though I'm home part of me is still over there and it seemed so normal to hear this that I could fall asleep to the sound because I somehow felt relaxed even though I knew I was in the middle of hell
Beautiful. Terrible but beautiful. You should make one with some light rain and jungle ambience, M-60's, M2's, distant Chinooks and Hueys, just a general Vietnam-era ambience. Maybe have the rain clear from time to time and increase the activity. I would up the bass massively for the distant effects. Having an air raid siren, or the smaller old hand-cranked sirens fade in and out every once in a while before a slight increase in shooting activity would be wonderful. Distant jets and artillery would be great too. It could cycle between firefights and air strikes and/or helicopters/jets passing distantly. Would take it right back to that place we never wanted to be, but just cant leave. I also want to state out of respect to people who have served, I have never done so and am not saying this in a way to insinuate I have. There is an eerie beauty to this side of humanity and I feel like wayy too many of our souls remember it from one aeon or another, I cannot watch even a video of warbirds starting up at air shows without crying, but this body of mine does not have the living memories of it.
I didn't play Dragon Rising but I did play Red River and this reminds me of engaging the Chinese during this mission that happened at night. You can hear artillery and small arms fire. It's quite scary, intense and it highlights the horrors of war.

What exactly is it about battlefield ambience that helps me relax and fall asleep? Like, sure, the sounds can be comparable to something like thunderstorms, but by all logical metrics, this should only make me *more* anxious by constantly reminding me of my fragile mortality.
