  • The area surrounding Èze was first settled around 2000 BC as a commune near Mount Bastide. The area was then occupied not only by the Romans but also by the Moors, who held the area for about 80 years until they were driven out by William of Provence in 973.
The history of Èze became turbulent several times when French and Turkish troops seized the village under Hayreddin Barbarossa in 1543, and Louis XIV destroyed the walls surrounding the town in 1706 in the War of the Spanish Succession. Finally, in April 1860, Èze was designated as part of France by a unanimous decision of the inhabitants of Èze.
Èze has been described as an "eagle's nest" because of its location overlooking a high cliff at 427 meters above sea level on the French Mediterranean. An Egyptian cross inside the church suggests the village's ancient roots when the Phoenicians erected a temple there to honor the goddess Isis.

How to get to Eze Village from Nice: There are two buses from Nice to Eze Village, the #82 or the #112. Don’t take bus #100 since it goes to Eze-sur-Mer and it will take you over 1h30 to hike up a steep mountain to reach the village! The ticket costs 1.50€ (just 1€ if you use a 10-trip card), and you can also use a day or week pass.

What to do and see in Eze
    THE HISTORICAL CENTER
To enter the village, you will pass through the 14th-century double fortified gate. You can then stroll through the small cobbled streets that are full of history but also full of charm. Don't miss the Sainte-Croix chapel, the parish church, and the Place du Planet with its Italian fountain from the 1930s.
    THE EXOTIC GARDEN OF EZE
Inside the exotic garden, there are sculptures, Mediterranean plants, and also several species of cactus. Perched above the village, it offers a stunning panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea. The visit of the garden remains pleasant even in summer since there are many shaded places and water points to refresh you.
    THE FRAGONARD PERFUMERY
Founded in 1926 by the former Parisian notary Eugène Fuchs, the Fragonard perfumery is one of the oldest in the Côte d'Azur. It was inaugurated in 1968 in Eze and you can also visit the cosmetics laboratory, where the body care products are made.
    THE GALIMARD FACTORY
The visit is free and lasts 45 minutes. You will discover the process of the Fleur au Parfum and the different steps of the artisanal soap factory. You will also be able to buy the products at factory prices.
    THE NIETZSCHE PATH
The path is named after the German philosopher Nietzsche who used to live in Eze and it will take you to the beach in 45 minutes. The access to the trail is right next to the entrance of the Golden Goat Castle. The path offers stunning views of the sea.
