The truth is, without generalizing, in all countries of the world there are fraudulent taxi drivers, as happened to me in several major countries, and here in Morocco there are fraudulent and deceitful drivers. Therefore, for me, the best application is in drive, even though it has not been regulated yet.

As a native I can say those scams exist because most services aren't regulated by the government yet. So before u take any service you have to negociate the fees beforehand and that's include also lawyers, handymen, cleaning lady... Negociate negociate. That's the way it is.

Next time if you don't have change for small bills you can easily tell them you will find the change in the closest store and they can wait for you get the change. If they don't want to simply give them what you have and take a picture of the license plate and there is a place to report them.

Hi Erin, I always look forward to these kinds of informative videos about Morocco, even small details like apps etc help so much.
I’m looking to move to Rabat in the near future if all goes as planned and wondering where to move to as I don’t know neighbourhoods yet so I need to do more research for that.
It’s a little hard because there aren’t many videos about this…
That main strip with the palm trees looks very nice near where you live!
If you could possibly do videos for cost of living per month in general that would be helpful also.
Do you think there’s a market for buying/renovating and selling property in Morocco or the country isn’t up to that level yet, and people instead just purchase new properties?
Also if one would like to live in Morocco, from what I’ve understood you just rent a property through the real estate after getting residency for a year and open an account???
    Thanks :)

In Morocco, red taxis are widely disliked due to their reputation for scamming tourists and refusing to stop for small groups. Consequently, locals prefer ride-hailing apps like inDrive. Traditional taxi drivers often attempt to sabotage these apps to maintain their ability to overcharge customers.

In Morocco the taxis have legal tariffs. 0,30 dh/ 100 meters. Plus 2 or 3 dhs for the start. So before you get a taxi calculate your trip using wise for example which gives you the distance to go.

    All City Taxis have taximeters.
Passengers, whether tourists or locals, have to check from the start that the taxi-driver has activated the taximeter or not !
By the way, the price of big six-passenger taxis which circulate inside cities is fixed, whereas the price of small three-passenger taxis depends on the counter/taximeter, and at night, there is an addition of half the price (50%) marked or dispayed in the meter !
In all, one has to be aware of scammers, for they exist everywhere, whether in Morocco or elsewhere !

You have to clarify to your viewers that only small taxies that have meters, NOT the big taxis, also in ALL stations and airports taxies have one price, NO meters all over Morocco, about the change, in the morning most taxies don’t have change, for your situation, you’ve should taken the taxi RED number on the side and report him in the taxi office

  • @Eastcoast2121
    @Eastcoast2121 Місяць тому

Agree about the taxi. No meter, get out and get the next one. I'm a bit surprised that as an animal lover, you condone the use of monkeys to earn a living. Any wild animal that is forced to wear clothes and is kept on a chain... just plain wrong. They HAVE to get on with the handler. Otherwise, they don't eat. Walk past. Plain cruel.

People trying to make money off of tourists is not unique to Morocco. You should act intelligently no matter which country you are traveling in.
In the souks It is expected that everyone will bargain, naturally tourists will pay more because they don't know the real prices.
The grand taxies have fixed prices and the smaller taxis have a meter. It is illegal for the small taxi drivers to overcharge tourists. If the small taxi wants to charge you a fixed price just say counter or meter, if they don't want to use the meter just get another taxi.
A taxi driver wanted to charge me 700 dirhams to go from my hotel to a friend's house when the real price is only 25 dirhams; I simply said no thank you, walked around the corner to the main Street and took a small (petit)taxi. I ended up paying 24 dirhams.

Not you excusing the people keeping monkeys in chains. Moroccans are not cave-men, they are intelligent people with self-awareness. They can make money other ways, as difficult as it may be, they choose to exploit those animals because they don't see animals as worthy of care or respect. Clearly you didn't see how they yank those monkeys around by the chain. Thankfully all the Moroccans I know have morals, and strongly strongly disagree with this.

I know you didn’t mean to be rude when you talked about the country not being as advance as American when comes to dealing with animals in your story about the monkeys but this type of exploitation is also not permissible in Islam. You can’t grab an animal, chaine it and exploit it for money. When I went to Marrakech I refused to have anything to do with it because it’s haram. I think that people should refrain from encouraging it and politely remind the people who engage in such activities that it’s haram. They are nice people they just don’t know better

I told her I had no money but she squirted the henna all over my arm and hand anyway and tried to get money form me. I only had USD dollars which are hard for the people here to exchange because they were not perfect. I said La over and over and still got molested. It was terrible. I gave her the dollars and walked away to wash my now stained arms. Avoid the Medina in Marrakech for me.

Hi Erin I hope all is well with you and your family 🤲
I agree with you about taxi drivers issues ! Not all of them ! However, big chunk of them they don’t care and they take advantage, which is happens to me with them many times specially in Marrakesh and somewhat in Casablanca, you may ask the driver to take you somewhere and usually you know how much is going to cross, but he will take you around basically for a tour to make you pay more money. which is this habit has to be stopped. Because it’s embarrassing . And these people has to be taken the commercial drivers license from them. because they don’t want to stop, they think it’s funny. 🙄For the people who handle the snakes and monkeys. totally different story because they’ve been doing it for over 800 years that’s how they make money and that how they make 11 to have a roof above that heads and food on the table . simple is that. specially a lot of UA-camrs they take a video of them to make money with that video. And handlers of the snakes and the monkeys they know that.
And UA-camrs most of them they don’t want to give them shit they become cheap . For whatever reason. Which is that’s not nice.
For the tour people that’s how they make their money also if you need help and he take you somewhere you need to go to , you have to tip him. You have to give him some money simply that. Because it’s not his job to take you there he’s doing that to make 11. For example, you go shopping at appliances store or clothing store or any store ,and you need help to your car,and they call for someone to help you which is he works for store he get paid and when he finish helping you, you thank him and you give him some some money, even though that he job . Basically for the tour people or monkeys, snakes handlers, they hustle for money, that’s all. Dima ma9rib ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦

In Marrakech, taxi drivers scam even Moroccans. With taxies, if you see the price is a scam, tell them to drive you to the police post for taxies in darija it’s called “pointage”, and if you complain there, they will be in trouble like getting a suspension for 15days.
Unfortunately in Marrakech, they are suffocating to tourists, and you literally need to be rude to dissuade them.
I hope you enjoy your time in Morocco.

The government tries to impose the rule of law as they are implemented in modern socities, but often the citizens go against those law for one reason or an other.
Durig the pandemic, the governent tried to pass a law that forces the cab drivers to use the counter, and stop loading the taxi with clients at each stop like a bus would do, but
the trade union gave the green light to the taxi drivers to go on strike, and protest in front of the parliament, which they did and the law could not be passed.
Their argument is that they don't earn enough money. Go figure how much is enough.
Laws that are critical are issued by the king himself, like the law of equal inheritence between sons and daughters. Unlil recently, a boy used to inherit double the inheritence of a girl. It is a religious law that still exists in most Arab countries. The modernisation program is moving way faster than the adaptation of the average Moroccan, but eventially he will catch up.
Historically Marrakech has always been the capital of hustling and scamming, partly due to unemployment and dry/harsh environment (tourism and artisanat are the source of bread), and partly because "they" deal with foreign visitors only (white folks with money). So everything goes...A scammer can do the clown or play dumb, assuming that he won't lose his face, as he would with a local.
The American biologists Stephen Jay Gould has a book called "The lying stones of Marrakech ", where he talks about the business of selling fake meteorites and fake fossils around the world. A scammer in Marrakech would sell you the skull of a donkey and tell you that it belonged to a T-Rex.
Generally speaking Moroccan public is compasionate, but when it comes to business or anything that involves money, you have act like a detective before you take out your wallet or agree on anything.

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I'm leaving Indiana for Morocco in about two weeks, and my husband and I were just wondering if oatmeal is available there. I make it every morning for my kids. Is it similar to American oatmeal? I'm also looking for grits.🤣

Yes we have oatmeal in Morocco, it says Avoine on the box. You just have to make a list of your favorite food in French to make it easy to find in the supermarket. Enjoy your stay.

Marrakesh is overrated as touristic city. It needs to be cleaned out of scammers like that first.

@@momof4vlogs i agree. I like the northern part of Morocco especially tetouan .
Also Rabat , and southern of morocco
Its less busy , people are better not materialistic , God fearing people.
      Welcoming and generous
I mean literally generous not like Marrakech
They ask you to pay to show a street.
I hate those people Who do that.

There are scammers in the world and in every country, but it is a person’s duty before getting into a taxi to read the number and memorize it, and in the event of a dispute, he must go to the taxi security department and file a complaint and they will bring him immediately.
