This guys' a genius. The most simple explanation ever. Most videos on UA-cam demonstrate on MTB but I'm glad he used a road bike to explain index shifting. Thanks a bunch.
I've probably watched dozens of videos regarding rear derailleur adjustment/limit screws. This is by far the best. The explanation is clear and concise. Thank you.
After reading a multitude of technical manuals and viewing video tutorials, this is the one where I finally got it! Many many thanks... this is the king of rear derailleur adjustment vids :-)
OMG that is the most clear and simplest explanation I have ever heard and seen here on youtube. Completely took the mystery out of tune up for me. Imagine it is 2021 now. This was taken 15 years ago. Yet the best explanation in my opinion. All in 7:24 minutes.
My cable came loose so I figured I would search youtube on how to adjust my gears. After watching another guy's video show how to adjust gears and messing with mine for an hour, with bad results, I finally watched your video and had them working in 5 minutes! Thanks!
Perfect guide. After a couple of days of screwing around with different "guides" on the net and being generally confused, this video made me able to adjust the rear gears in 10 minutes without any problems.
I go back to this video every time I need to adjust the gears on my bikes.Your explanation and instructions are so clear and simple thank you.Ive seen your more recent video but still go back to this one.
Hi there Robert, Thanks for the comment. I hope watching my film has helped you to sort your gears out. If so, please subscribe and come back soon as I will be uploading some more maintenance how to's in HD in the near future.
***** Hi there, obviously without seeing your bike I can't really comment but, the first thing I would say is, if it is a fairly new bike, I would take it back to the place you bought it. They should be able to sort it out. Gears sometimes take a little while to settle in, especially Shimano. If that is not possible, based on what you have described, I would sort out your rear derailleur first and then the front one. It is very difficult to sort out the front mech if the rear one doesn't work properly. I will be making a film about how to adjust the front mech in the near future so please subscribe and come back soon. Good luck.
+Jom Jiao Hello there, Thanks for the comment. I really appreciate it. I'm glad you still find it useful. Tony did a great job on screen and the information is still as accurate now as it was in 2006!
Thanks a Lot! I bought a bike to ride with my son and this adjustment looked really complicated for me, and I didn't know where to start with. You made my day today, thanks again.
For years I've tried to do this but messed it up but this is the best explanation I've seen and I now can do it myself very simply thank you for your great tutorial. :)
Hi there, really glad that you find the film useful. I have already re-made this tutorial in HD. Please follow this link to watch it. ua-cam.com/video/Nr-ow1Yvxy4/v-deo.html Please also check out my other maintenance how to's and if you find them useful I'd appreciate a subscribe and even a share. Thanks for watching!
@@jollygoodvelo this by far the most detailed and explained to its utmost simplicity(if there's such word) and very easy to understand. Thank you very much, this is the part of bike maintenance that gives me headache and frustrations. Now this is spot on!!
The best explanation I've watch! I'm portuguese and not even videos in portuguese language was better than this one! You made it simple, that's how it should be. Thank you, keep the good job.
I wish I could buy you a beer or two to show my appreciation, You're the best, simple is always the best way to explain things and you have it down. I don't have a stand, so I use tie down straps and hang my bike from the stem and seat from the rafters, it works for me,,Thanks Tony
One classy fella, doing mechanical work in a dress shirt and slacks! Seriously, this is a great teaching, very clear and concise. I would pay for more videos by Tony.
Hi Richie, Yes, dress shirt and slacks! This was one of the first films I ever posted on UA-cam back in 2006. It was probably one of the first, if not THE first film explaining how to adjust your rear derailleur. Tony did a great job presenting, especially as he did it without a script, off the cuff. I too would love to make some more films with him but, he has moved on and no longer works in the cycle industry.
I know I'm repeating what the last 100 comments generally say, but here I go anyways: Awesome video. Super simple, super clean, clear explanation. Much appreciated. Thank you.
your an absolute star tony! clear an concise. the perfect tutorial... just one point! to anyone reading this. the derailleur on some mb drops to the lowest gear when you release the gear cable, an not the highest!
Here I was thinking on putting my bike into a mechanic to get gears adjusted. Brilliant and so simply explained even I managed to grasp it. Many thanks.
Thanks! You made the process as simple as possible to understand and follow. Had the entire process completed in just a few minutes and now everything is working as designed. Brilliant!!
The best video. I have understood the basics of adjustments of the rear Derailleur Thanks Tony now I do not have to visit the cycle shop for minor adjustments
Thank you for this video. I have used it as a reference several times. Your explanations are spot on and following your instructions has made it simple for a lame-man like me to properly set up my derailleur.
Great video -thanks for posting. I found this when looking for help in adjusting the gears on my TREK 7700 hybrid. Earlier this year, it had needed a new cassette gear cable. 200 miles later, the gears were not right - changing two at a time or not at all. After watching this vid, I was able to solve the problem. The main thing was a bit of slack in the gear cable. I fixed that and made a small adjustment on the micrometer to stop the gear chattering. 1000% better now!
Thank you for your help. I've gone through many people about this topic for nine years and none have been as clear as this. Maybe I can sort out the old derailleur problems now.
This is easily the best and easiest to follow Shimano gear adjustment video available. I would like to see a front gear video created in the same manor.
This was terribly easy m8, wonderful CLEAR straight forward, save me a bunch serving the roady, when one can do it themselves with excellent tutorials as this. Well done Sir.
Excellent video - very simple guide to tuning up gears! I was out for a ride during the weekend and noticed some of my higher gears were clicking. I will be using this video as a guide to ensure smoother shifting.
The method recommended in this video worked for me. In words it is Loosen cable completely. Get the high gear and low right using the H and L screws (you will need to push the mechanism with your fingers to move it to the lowest = biggest gear) Reconnect cable pretty loose (adjuster screwed right in) From highest gear click down one gear (but since the cable is loose, the gear won't change) Tighten cable (unscrewing the adjuster) till the mechanism moves down one gear. You are done!
thanks so much. just picked up a brand new schwinn folding bike that i got for 1/2 price. looks like the problem with the first purchaser was that the gears didnt work. watched your video and 10 minutes later had it working:-). Thanks again Rob Ontario Canada
Brilliant! I can now adjust the gears in less time than it takes to watch the video. Being in the middle of nowhere it's great to be able to fine tune and replace parts myself.
A lot clearer than other videos I've seen! Could you make a video explaining the setup of the front derailleur, including fitting & positioning please? I've seen conflicting info on how far from the chainring the plates should be, i.e. the vertical position on the seat tube/braze on.
+TriumphT140D Hello there, glad you liked the tutorial and, no, unfortunately, the video quality isn't the best. To be fair, I posted this in 2006 so way before HD. I have updated this since but the info in this film is still 100% relevant.
Great video. the only one that waas helpfull from all rear gear adjustments. The best! its sad that you don't make new videos for other fixes because you are the best!
Perfect video! All the manuals that came with my bike really didnt explain the screws at all. They told how to ajust it, but it wasnt clear WHY to do that.
+1 I'd love to see some tips on aligning the front derailleur - I can't get mine onto the highest gear... I'm thinking either loosen the high limit screw or tighten the cable, but I don't think there's a tensioner so it'd be messy. A video of this greatness on the front gears would rock!
Thankyou for that. I recently got into cycling and bought an entry level road racer. I havent had the balls to touch it yet and the guys at halfords dont seem interested in anything thats not a BMX or a mountain bike. Looks like a 6yr old video is what i needed to understand how these thigns work.
give this guy a nobel prize, give him the one from all gore, riding a good setup bike is way more fun then watching his movie, and also green. truly perfect
Very good vid, one little gripe - He says to start with the barrel adjuster fully clockwise, that will only give adjustability in one direction! So if doing that I think make sure you start with the cable slack, then youll only need to tighten it the cable by turning barrel anticlockwise. Otherwise start with the barrel nearer the middle so you can adjust both ways.
The quality is fine, I caught everything. The closeups are clear enough that you can tell how the procedure works. I think that's what some have a beef about. But UA-cam didn't have better than 240p in 2007.
Great video, very informative. I just used it to cure my badly indexing gears after some dribbling idiot told me to adjust the screws on the derailleur, which as you correctly pointed out only limit the chain travel. Cheers fella.
Very good job' I've got a problem with my gears, because I couldn't choose the fastest tribes in back. Now I know how can i adjust them and what I must do for my gears to perfect and silent work. Thank You!!!
Thanks Richard, Glad you liked it. I am in the process of putting together some more, new maintenance films in HD so please subscribe and come back when I have posted them.
