I'm new to LGS play and pulled Bolas in my first draft ever. Won two games with the -4 and -12 abilities, went 2-1, immediately dreamed of him being my first commander but didn't think I could even get a Grixis manabase for less than $25, so thanks for this video! This is everything I could want in a truly budget deck
For anyone reading this, Fell Specter does the same as 16:40, has an ETB target opponent discards a card, and is a 1/3 flier for only {3}{B}. Goes for 16 cents NM, all star in this deck.
One of my favorite decks of this channel so far, it does a lot of different things while remaining focused and accruing incrememental value. Sometimes with $25 you can only afford to focus on one thing but there's a few cool things this deck can do at the same time
Hey! Congrats on the spon! It might have been in a few of the other videos but this is the first I've noticed it! So good to see the rapid growth of the channel
Just got back into magic recently and loving Commander format. Your videos have definitely helped me build numerous decks due to not knowing what type of cards are out there. I love your videos!
I think it would be a great addition to these videos to see a brief “overview” of the deck and it’s breakdown of card types. When I’m deckbuilding I often worry about the balance of the deck - too many creatures? Too few spells? Correct number of land? I think for casual and new players, this would be helpful to see how your decks are organized and balanced!
Oh man, I really like the idea of building a budget deck around an expensive commander. I pulled a Bolas when I bought a box back when M19 released, and I’ve been wondering how to build around him without breaking bank. Thanks so much and keep this awesome content coming :) 👍👍👍👍👍
I’m really digging this deck build. I go lucky and pulled Bolas a while back and I wanted to build a discard theme. And this hit the ball out the park! Thank you!
I really enjoy your videos. I am learning about so many cards I didnt know existed, and it is opening my mind to the idea that you dont need to spend hundreds of dollars to build fun decks! Thank you for your amazing content, and please keep it up!
This is my first Commander's Quarters video, and watched it since I ripped a Bolas from my bundle and wanted to see EDH options for him. Budget options, great editing, you sir, have earned a sub.
Thank you for showing me Noetic Scales! My Nath Deck is so gonna love them! Keep up the great work. :) I can just send Newbies complaining about deck construction cost to your channel and basically rob them of their argument against commander. You are a hero to this format.
Kevin Pitsch I mean it’s explained at the beginning that he’s not including the commander in the cost which I think is a great thing cus it gives him more options I personally think he should do sum 50$ videos not including the cost of the commander cus 50$ isn’t to much money and would give him way way more options and allow him to make way more videos only so much you can do with 25$and I think he could make sum amazing sum what competitive decks with a 50$ budget and again 50$ is definitely affordable as long as it’s under 80$ I think it’s affordable with one or two paychecks Evan on the tights budgets
Beginning of any article can try to make up its clickbait title, it doesn't unclickbait, would it have been so hard to change the 25 to a 50? Instead his reasoning is could have just opened it, with that logic one could make a 25 budget teferi control deck for standard
*looks at video titled "commander's quarters just hit 1'000 subscribers", one month ago* *looks at current sub count* "O I see, it's one of those channels"
Dude so awesome that you have a sponsor and that the link lets us buy the deck! I was wondering when it would happen because I had a hard time trying to get the tasigur list.
Noetic Scales seems like it'd be an interesting addition to the Arcades, The Strategist budget deck. Though the problem I can see there is the fact that Arcades would continuously bounce to the hand unless you purposefully keep back 3 cards. However, this would keep the board in a perpetual state of almost no blockers for the opponents side to swing through with the walls and never bounce the walls to hand as it's "power greater than cards in hand".
Loving the work man! I'm in need of some budget decks that are still sneaky competitive to balance things out and your lists are the first ones I check for! I'd love to see a Marwyn, the Nurturer list at some stage - there's a few storm type cEDH lists around that would be interesting to see if they can be budgetified!
Ooh, now this is a spicy commander choice! I just built my own Nicol Bolas the Ravager deck recently but I'm gonna catch some pointers from this for sure! Cheers man!
@@oOOoOphidian aye, did the same. I am running geths grimoire and some other discard cards but it isn't the main theme of the deck. It's more of kinda themed nicol bolas deck
Wouldn't "Fell Spectre" be a good card in the deck too? It has an etb effect that makes them discard and every time they discard they lose a life. I feel like it would at least be mentioned in the upgrades if it cost too much
This deck is nasty. I love the grixis etb theme because I feel like azorious always takes that archetype. On a broad note, I also like listening to you (Mitch) more than Budget Mtg Decks (channel) because I can actually watch yours with the time limit. You make your videos much more streamlined and down to the point with your awesome explanations and overall synergies are SUPERB. Keep making more budget decks! :) 👍
To anyone watching now, at 8:33 there is a strict upgrade on merchant of secrets with "Tome Raider" since it has flying and prob costs around 5 cents aswell
For 3-color decks in the original shards, I've found that the Lair cycle is a really good, cheap land cycle. Don't know if Crosis's Catacombs would work for this, as it is getting pricy, but the others are definitely worth looking into.
Every time i see 3 color decks using alara shard colors i always recommend the lair cycle for them. Theyre tri lands with "when (insert land name) enters return a non lair land to your hand or sacrifice it" and THEY COME IN UNTAPPED The Grixis lair is crosis's catacombs
Please do more decks with the price of the commander aside. Many of us put the commander aside or already own it when we budget! I'm in love with this deck as a Neheb the Worthy player. I'm not making this deck, but boy you've really given me some excellent ideas on what to add to mine!
Seems like a pretty strong and hard to deal with deck. I like the idea of emptying my opponents' hands but imo there is a problem with such a strategy in a traditionally non-competitive format like edh. People hate not being able to play their cards so this will make u the number one target to deal with and they will team up against you and they will do so asap. Especially if they know that this deck is based on forcing discards a lot and it's not just a grixis deck. Another issue might be those pesky Golgari based decks (or Kess decks) with tons of gy synergies/shenanigans since they don't really mind their cards in their gy. Personally i would run at least a couple of mass gy exile effects like Crook of Condemnation, Relic of Progenitus, Silent Gravestone, Sentinel Totem, Planar Void or Scavenger Grounds. Cards that i find fun to add in such a deck (some might be kinda off budget though) are Lazav (the older version), Hedonist's Trove for lots of card advantage (and gy hate against a gy deck), Boneyard Parley so that your opponents get to see how useful their new cards can be since u won't let them cast them and Syphon Mind (i believe u missed it somehow).
Hey I know its been a while since you commented this but thank you for the ideas!! A player in my group plays golgari, was honestly wondering how to deal with him
I think the deck is all cool and stuff, however I feel that if you make the exception of excluding the commander's price, you should bring out its full potential. If i were to spend $18 on a card, it's not for a 4/4 flyer that makes opponents discard when ETB, its also for the cool planeswalker on its backside. I see its biggest potential in the -4 ability. I've recently build a (semi)budget deck with this commander, and it really focusses around boardwipe, resurrection and big badass creatures. Early game it just builds up mana rocks and defensive barriers, the siege enchantments for selection, mid-game it casts big boys with huge etb effects (e.g. demonlord belzenrok and sepulchral primordial), while much later in the game you want to rely on either spells with X in the manacost, or on flipping bolas + casting a boardwipe, to then use its -4 and immediately build up your own board again. Anyways, your deck is cool and definitely gave me inspiration on some aspects of my own deck, but I think you miss the full potential of this awesome commander.
If your group won't hate you out, running the Hondens (at least U/B) can be reliable sources of advantage. A little more money can get you the Words of____ enchantments too. Surpised at no Recoil effects. But budget etc.
Going to mirror the views of other people here. Fell specter is a MUST. It might not target all opponents but that damage it does and easy casting of just 3B rather than say 2BB is so nice.
Funny this should come up. Been trying to make a deck around the original Nicol Bolas. Even though I own all the Bolas planeswalkers other than this one, it's still hard to plan around. I'm going for a deck that's good on its own but gets better after dropping Bolas.
I would consider Nightscape Familiar (NM is under a dollar), it's a creature with "blue and red spells you cast cost 1 less to cast", mind you that a spell that is both blue and red doesn't cost 2 less to cast though. Another creature is Goblin Electromancer (NM is under a quarter), his ability is to reduce your instant and sorcery spells by 1. They aren't a must but they're definitively nice and they're budget.
I was actually looking at something similar, exploiting the whole discard/etb thing. I was thinking more along the lines of stuff like Magus of the Wheel, Reforge the Soul, Wheel of Fate/Fortune, Whispering Madness, Windfall, etc. Obviously not budget, but that was the idea I had. Might have to give this a go, it looks like a lot of fun.
Another great vid! I think this is one I'll definitely have to build and try out. I think I mentioned this on another vid, but anyway you think you could modify the end/ Reasonable Upgrades? Mostly just guiding us along the path of, which cards in the main deck would you sub the upgrades for? Can't wait to become hated at my table for making their hands disappear :)
Haha nice! As for the recommended cards to take out, I definitely hear you and the reasons to include that! I ultimately lean more towards not wanting to make people think that there is only one right answer and one right way to do things. I think the changes that can be made to the deck (including reasonable upgrades) definitely depend on playstyle and meta!
A very appropriate deck for the evil mastermind himself. I'm just waiting and praying for his twin Ugin the Spirit Dragon to be a flipwalker now and have my most loved planeswalker as a Commander.
Love, love , love me some Bolas. Big Daddy is so fun. He is a bit of a salty card, and if you've seen any of my comments in the past, I love the taste of salt. I love it when players do mean things to me. I'm an aggro/sadomasochistic player XD I blow up lands, and I encourage you to do it to me. I eat cards out of your hand, and encourage you to do it to me. I bounce things back to hands, and then make you discard stuffs. I encourage this. I really like Mitch's style. Him on Game Knights/Extra Turns(whatever it was) SUPER GOOD! I have a pipe dream of playing a Pod with Craig(Mr. INFECT) JLK using Nekusar, and Mitch using any disgusting budget strategy. I just love heated matches that end in fun and respect. I went with Bounce and Discard with Bolas. Lots of fun, and very rude and mean XD but you cannot argue the greatness:)
Chromium, the mutable has real potential as a budget commander. He's very cheap and all you have to do is ramp and slap enchantment and equipment on him and he'd protect himself.
Dude....you just solved my crisis of what i wanted to do for my nicol bolas edh, with a few alterations i am definitely building this deck...i am going to destroy people
It works like a dream. Endless flickering on and off the battlefield making my opponents discard prolonging the battle enough to destroy their field and then attack them. It's a catch 22 though you gotta watch out for counters or instant exiles especially against your commander. My deck could use some fine tuning but otherwise its pretty good
ImTheDude Games cool! Im very much in doubt between this Bolas deck or budget Edgar Markov, both are fun, but i do not know how strong and consistent they are
Only way to know for sure is build it and test it. Just focus on the mechanics you wanna run and then look for the cards that'll help you do so. No deck is gonna be perfect on the first build, i've been tweaking and reconstructing more than half my decks lately
The minute I heard Bolas and Discard. I fell in love and plan on buying this deck listing and using vs my WNM's 200+ decks and making them discard all their goodies. My problem is I want to add the pricey cards you recommend but am wondering what you think would be the best cards to swap out for them?
Not nearly as close when it comes to raw power, but would Crosis The Purger (the grixis 6 mana dragon) be nice budget alternative to Bolas at the helm?
It just occurred to me that Undying Evil is almost definitely a shout-out to Evil Dead, what with the creature looking demonic and pushing up through a trap door.
So are you gonna include the price-excluded commander decks in the duels? I'm in favor of seeing this deck but it is the most expensive so far (I think).
I never knew a deck could cost the same as the commander
Ready To Random unfortunately some of the cards that still have alot of hype can be pushed out of any reasonable budget
Type 2. It will come down in months after it rotates. But if you get a deal..
Definitely a rare occurrence!
I know that nicol bolas the ravanger is more expensive than $20, I have seen its price, it's in the hundreds
Wait, what happened to make it's price lower down?
I'm new to LGS play and pulled Bolas in my first draft ever. Great cards for fixing! But they are land disadvantage in my opinion.

I think reavealing opponents hand cards, choose and discard a card from their respective hand is also good. Like brain maggots, thougtseize etc.
Fraying sanity with a nicol bolas themed edh deck can lead to milling an opponent out. Also prince of thralls can add some pressure
Should we throw in Avalanche Riders? Its a 4 cost (2 red, 2 any) 2/2 Echo, When it enters the battlefield, destroy target land
Dude....you just solved my crisis of what i wanted to do for my nicol bolas edh, with a few alterations i am definitely building this deck...i am going to destroy people
Awesome! Have fun!!!
You did the deck? Im curious tô know how Good it is
It works like a dream.
Noetic scales is such an overlooked card. i dont know why most playlists ignore it
I think that Arcanis, the omnipotent would be an interesting deck teck.
Can definitely take it in a few directions!
The minute I heard Bolas and Discard. I fell in love and plan on buying this deck listing and using vs my WNM's 200+ decks and making them discard all their goodies. My problem is I want to add the pricey cards you recommend but am wondering what you think would be the best cards to swap out for them?
Definitely depends on your playstyle and meta! My recommendation is to test the deck out as is and make adjustments as you go!
I was lucky enough to pull a foil and regular Bolas in a Booster box, can’t wait to build this deck
That is lucky!
Not nearly as close when it comes to raw power, but would Crosis The Purger (the grixis 6 mana dragon) be nice budget alternative to Bolas at the helm?
Hmmm you would have to change quite a bit of the deck since he doesn't do discard with an ETB, but would be a fun deck on his own!
If you want to add the reasonable upgrades to the deck which cards would you take out?
yo congrats on the sponsor!
Thanks!
What about maybe some themed budget decks maybe? Just throwing ideas out for you.
Definitely a possibility! Any recommendations for themes?
The Commander's Quarters how about a surveil budget deck
Could be a very interesting one! Wish Doom Whisperer wasn't $20 haha
This should be one of the break the bank episodes ;p
Would be a good one to do!
Hey guys! Sweet sweet video, subscribed a few weeks ago, no regrets.
Is there a possibility that you could make a Mishra deck? That'd be so cool!
Thanks! And maybe in the future!
It only makes sense for them to sponsor you I’ve watched your videos and almost immediately gone to tcg player and had 99 card carts
Haha nice!
I love discard strategies for there effectiveness in card advantage. And Im pretty surprised that Fell Specter wasnt included in the deck.
A great card to consider for the deck!
It just occurred to me that Undying Evil is almost definitely a shout-out to Evil Dead, what with the creature looking demonic and pushing up through a trap door.
Would love to see an update on this concept.
Yes what i needed today
Glad to help!
this seems opressive, I love it!
Haha nice!
Can you make Scion of the Ur-Dragon EDH, thats will be great)))
Maybe in the future!
Alpheto alchemist+Illusionist bracers+azami lady of scrolls+laboratory maniac
So are you gonna include the price-excluded commander decks in the duels? I'm in favor of seeing this deck but it is the most expensive so far (I think).
It is, and yes I think the price excluded ones will be fine for the duels!
A Phenax, God of Deception Mill deck would be fun to play I reckon
Congrats on the sponsor :)
