    I am primarily a Fuji and Nikon shooter, but got a Panasonic M4/3 body for the IBIS (for video)- I paired it with the Olympus 45 1.8 and voila what a beautiful rendition the lens has - I havent used it much but it looks a really nice lens, and I got it supercheap through a deal during Christmas.

  • @lorenschwiderski
    @lorenschwiderski 4 роки тому +1

    A very good deal indeed when $250 -- really like the Olympus 45mm f1.8. The little guy performs! Also liking the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 at $99 or $149.
    Both are great little prime lenses at a low price. I have used both for street photography and landscape shots. True it is tight, but it depends on if you are a wide shooter, or prefer more shots narrow. I find the kits OK for the little bit of wide shots I do. I bet that Olympus 60mm macro is great bang for buck, when on sale too!

      True. It's great on the EM10 mark ii. So is the 17mm/1.8.
      The feel that I get is that the images are much bigger than the lens. Out of focus background blue is gorgeous on the 45 and pretty nice even on the 17, which is something I noticed just eight days ago on 29 July when shooting some pleasing hanging leaves against a church in the background.

    I have both and they are amazing but for my use, I use the small one more. I'm an amateur and I don't make a living from photography. The 1.2 leaves less from home by volume and weight, I go out to do a specific (family) session. I use 1.8 more and it must be said that it is fantastic for its size, weight and price. I have 1.2 for a great offer from Amazon (€ 644). I love it but the 1.8 is left over and the 1.2 will be sold this afternoon. a hug!

    Smiles. This is my nature and zoo lens and it is stunning. I will take it over any of the pro lenses hands down; is low glass so gives images dripping in microtones which you won't get from any of the pro lenses. This lens is so sharp that it will give a X3 crop (on a good contrasty subject it will take x4 if you are careful). This gives a digital equivalent zoom range of 90-270mm with an option on 360mm. I see all the DSLR rigs at the zoo with huge lenses and Google, they get very little; I see a leopard or such hiding behind a branch, I flip up the screen on my GX9 and hold it down by my knee and squeeze the shutter with X2 tap the screen and there is the cat (OK I may turn the screen a little too where the big snappers are standing but I'm human giggles). This lens is a perfect complement to my 17mm F1.8; short zoom is provided by my TG-3 slipped in my coat pocket ;-)

      I've got one and it's a fine lens. There's something about the culture of many UA-cam photography gear reviewers that requires them to be half-apologetic admitting that a $350 USD lens is a pretty good performer and you can do great work with it. I've had a few damn lean years myself, don't mind admitting, and I've had magazine covers and gallery shows I shot with a kit lens, no lie. About 85 percent of the gear you can buy is fine. I've got some budget for gear now but if you don't, get this or the Panny 1.7 and don't look back, you're in good shape. Back during the real serious lockdowns in the States I researched and bought a bunch of vintage manual Nikon portrait lenses and wow are they sweet. There's just no need to spend a ton of money. There just isn't.

    I think cheap is good, especially since you won’t find a 90 or 85 lens on a full frame for the same price. And you know what for basketball season it really does produce great basketball shots under the rim, and being small, well you have no problems with security. I know no one would ever think about that but it is an option.

      @@weizenobstmusli8232 Yeah that's true. I'd like to see how those lenses perform against Olympus pro line lenses. Those Sigmas cost half or even third of the price what Olympus pro lenses cost. And i think size is irrelevant in this comparison.

      @masterjeyt 6 років тому

      @@MoTTi543210 I'll respectfully disagree. Size is one of the main selling point of MFT, hence the "micro". The converter itself will almost be as big as Olly prime lenses. And if you know your way with second-hand purchases, price doesn't matter much. Cheers mate.

      @MoTTi543210 6 років тому +1

      Thanks Roger! I know... Tony has created a ripple of 'angers' from a few UA-camrs and I've seen a few counter attacking their comments. hahah well. it's up for debate. However, I do they they went a little too far on claiming they are dying straight out and 'suggesting' people to go FF. I use FF and still have FF. But they are only reviewers, not a pro who makes money from photography. I, like many, who use M43 professionally see the benefits of such platform. So good luck with them.

      I think its amazing that so many FF users slag of MFT, Personally I think that its the photographer that makes the picture not the gear they use although it does help to have good glass, I use MFT because the quality apart from very low light is every bit as good as anything on the market and for me the lack of weight and bulk means I always have my camera with me which never happen when I was using FF

    Hey Jimmy, if you had to choose between the 45mm vs the 75mm for portrait work, which one would you choose? Which one do you think gives the most pleasing results in terms of facial distortion and stuff? I have a 20mm for everyday stuff, but I’d like to get a dedicated portrait lens too. I tend to like the more compressed backgrounds, like a Tony Scott movie, but I just don’t know. What are your thoughts?

      Hello 👋
      You had no reply as nobody but you can reply to what are your tastes really
      Myself on full-frame, I absolutely love my Canon EF 135mm F/2
      So will get an Olympus 75mm F/1.8 to replicate that
      But I already have the 45mm F/1.8 .. No-brainer as so cheap and small

      @prestonowens4594 Рік тому

      @@GallicGarlic hello, honestly so much time had passed that I forgot I wrote this comment. At this point I’ve got the 45mm f1.8, 25mm f1.8, 12mm f2, and 40mm f1.4. It’s a kinda weird set, but it works for me. I’d still like to get the 75mm though as I like the compressed look; it reminds me of Tony Scott movies. Thank you for your reply though.
      On another note, right now as an amateur photographer I’m having a very difficult time getting people to model for me. I’ve put up posters at a few coffee shops and an art store, I’ve asked some coworkers at my factory too. But so far nobody will model for me even though I’m willing to pay ~$60/hour. I’ve had one person say yes twice, but they’ve flaked on me both times the day of the shoot. Maybe it’s because I live in a smaller city in the Midwest. Idk, but how are you supposed to build up a portfolio of portraits if nobody wants to get model for them?

    I bought this lens twice, one second-handed and one brand new. But later I sold them out primarily because of the closest focus range is too long (50cm). I am thinking about the Pany 42.5mm F1.7 which has 30cm minimal focus range and cheap to afford.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for watching Joan. Yes, it doesn't focus as close as to some of the more modern M43 lenses but I never found it a problem, perhaps due to my use of the lens. In the UK, the Panasonic 42.5 is over 40% more expensive than Olly, and also bigger in size and slightly heavier. I do like that it has OIS but I don't need it on any of my M43 bodies so it not a selling point for me :) They are both capable and sharp but for me, the cheaper one wins as in terms of image quality, they are equal but one does it a lot cheaper, lighter and smaller :)

    Depth-of-field, and HYPERFOCUS FOCUSING with Oly Primes (sad) or are U running around in a Circle of Confusion (CoC)!
    I use my Pentax HD/DA LIMITED prime lens series (manual focus) on an original Pen and a OM-D E-M5 Mark II Limited with great success using a NOVOFLEX adapter. It's a relatively "inexpensive" prime alternative considering the great expense of Leitz/Leica and other premier brands. Some Voietlander lenses are reasonably priced but large. The Pentax lenses are smaller, perfectly sized and highlight Pentax's commitment and heritage to street photography.
    These are my favorites: HD DA 21mm F3.2 AL, HD DA 40mm F2.8 Pancake, HD DA 35mm F2.8 Macro, and HD DA 70mm F2.4. The Macro (now 70mm) and 70mm (now 140mm) are gems. Many might not know that during the film era, 135mm was considered a standard mid-tele. It was a prime requirement in UR collection.
    These are all metal construction (made in Vietnam), very well made, smooth operating, come with lens shades (do U use yours?) AND include DEPT-OF-FIELD SCALES, unlike the Olympus primes.
    And this is the BIG issue with the Oly primes (and others), no depth-of-field scales. Understating and working with depth-of-field, and HYPERFOCUS FOCUSING ( www.picturecorrect.com/tips/hyperfocal-focusing-photography-tips/ ) is an ESSENTIAL skill-set for becoming an outstanding photographer, opening grand doors to creativity and a guarantee not to miss the street shot. It's really the most important reason for using prime lenses (not considering personal placement and image quality improvement). It's about creativity, manipulating the light, and technically applying the digital equivalent of Ansel Adams Zone System to UR exposures. Without the scales most will be lost.
    Find several used primes such as the classic M42 or K Takumar's, or NIKKOR's and spend time developing depth of field, and HYPERFOCUS FOCUSING skills.
