I would say scholes was primarily a "playmaking box to box" just like Falcao, Masopust or Van Hanegem. But their way of playing has evolved. Getting older and running l'ESS they migrated to what I call central holding playmaker in the family of deep lying playmakers even if they remain higher on the the pitch than Pirlo or x.alonso.

By the way Clodoaldo was the deep playmaker in Brazil 70. Gerson was more advanced. He played as a real 10 (attacking midfielder), while Pelè and Tostao played as strikers, Jairzinho as a an attacking right wing and Rivelino as a left mezzala
