  • In this video I talk about why I sold my Nikon D850, and all of my f mount lenses for the Nikon Z7ii and all mirrorless lenses. I talk about its uses for landscape photography, astrophotography and time lapses, and why it is an upgrade for my type of photography.

Good to see someone gush over Nikon and not Sony or Canon. To many channels delivering the same perspective on the same gear. Not that you convinced me to buy Nikon but I appreciate the point of view. 🥂

Hi Mike, great to see you back on YT. I went to the Z7 right after it came out and sold almost all of my F mount gear. I've been quite happy with my current lens kit, unfortunately, I sold my 105 macro and still can't get the Z mount 105 to replace it. Fortunate, I do have an Irix 150 macro, to use while I wait for the Z mount to become available. I left Arizona for good, although I'm sure I'll be visiting on occasion.

Life long Nikon shooter and I've been seriously considering switching over to a different platform. The thought of it has made me cringe, so I've really tried to get a good feel for the Z7ii to see whether or not it'd be wise to shift for myself. Your video and some other finer details have been a big help, I'll be staying with Nikon. For what I do the move over from the D850 to the Z7ii will be perfectly fine. Thanks for your insights, totally appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing that tip about infinity focus reset when setting the camera to manual focus and the turning it off. I have both the Z6II and Z7II and these are the two best Nikon cameras that I have ever owned, love them! And the Z glass is great. I don’t have the 20 f1.8 I wish I did did, but I have the 14-30, 24-70 f4, 35 & 50 1.8 as well as the 70-200. I can not complain about any of this glass it is all stellar!

You can set 3 types of settings via the U1, U2 and U3 dials ( top left switch). The extended exposure time that you can do with this Z7ii and the Z6ii is a blessing for landscape shooters. The z f4 lenses can shoot in the evening, just set your timer a little longer. Great video Bro

I was seriously considering the Nikon D850 but you video has helped me to shy away from D850. I am trying to put together my first video of my most recent trip. I went to Fantasy Canyon in Utah. Just FYI the z6ii and z7ii have something called exposure smoothing for time lapse and it works in interval mode or time lapse movie mode. It smooths out the fluctuations in exposure that happened when clouds cover the sun or at sunset for example so you can get smooth transitions between light and dark. It’s basically the kind of stuff that canon’s used to be able to do when magic lantern firmware was around but way better.

Great vid. Here is my tip for you... I use 2 sec "Exposure delay" on my 7ii instead of 2 sec timer. When you turn your camera off and on, Exposure Delay is still at 2 secs. I have also added Exposure delay mode option to my I menu so I can turn it on and off quickly.

Love the opening quote! 🤣 It sounds like we have similar styles. I’m just starting with the Z7ii as my D850 back-up. Right now I’m depending on the ftz2 to allow me to leverage my F-mount glass. (I have a lot) I’m having a hard time justifying Z mount glass just to duplicate lenses. How much difference does it make for your prints?

Fujifilm X-T2 already had this long shutter function by just putting SS dial to T and moving back dial up to 15'.
It's interesting to see technology flowing through the market though.

Nice shots Mike. I'm also considering switching from my D850 to a Z7II. I was considering the S glass of 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8 but was on the fence about the 14-24 F2.8 or the 14-30 f4. The 2.8 version is a bit sharper but its also bigger and needs 112mm filters. Do you find the 14-30 f4 sharp enough to print big? Try to stay cool!

I'm sure someone has already said this but, the timer will extend do 15 min not 30 min. But that's still better than having to use bulb mode with an intravelometer to do 3 or 4 min long exposures. What tripod are you using? It looks like a Benro. I just bought the Benro 38 C mach 3. I went with the Colorado tripod co. highline ball head. I have the z6 II and I love it. I also bought the 20mm f/1.8. It's a great combo. Hudson Henry did a video recently on how great these 2 cameras can focus in low light. If you turn the low light assist on you can hand hold the camera and use auto focus to focus on a bright star or planet. Then put the camera back on the tripod. You can have everything set for blue hour and then take the camera off to focus on a star/planet and then put the camera back on to do the milky way shots. How cool is that? Not many cameras can do that.

I did the same 8 months ago. As I sold all, I could have gone sony. I remain Nikon and do not regreat it. The main reason was the lenses and the 14-24 2.8 that can fit filters was the main reason. I thing there is much to improve in z bodies to be ahead of sony and now Canon, but I am shure nikon will be there soon. Eventually I will upgrade the z7ii, and have something even or superior than sony and canon. But the Z lenses quality is unbeatable, and there is where the money is invested.

As you said lens availability is a challenge I think its almost there from a landscape perspective. As you alluded to, from a wildlife perspective it is short, doable however.
    20m 1.8, 14-30 f4, 24-70 2.8 and a 100-400 f4 (needed now).
I bought and returned the 14-24 2.8, I didn't see that big of a difference to the F4 to align $2700 to it.

Hey Chuck! That’s great to hear. I’m hoping they come out with that 100-400 here soon. I now have the 14-30 f4, and was kind of 2nd guessing my choice. But that price tag of the 14-24 is pretty steep, and I’d have to get new filters if I want the 2.8.

I had some and have some D200, D300, D700, D750, D850, Z7ii, D3s... D700 beats them all: better colors, better noise, images have the elusive quality of film, feels like a camera in my hand. More pixels? Video... is not photography. Yes, eye detection is SOMETHING to have. Here we speak about landscape photography. I would like to suggest to pay a visit to Ansel Adam's negative of Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico and then learn about his about 12 hours spent in the dark room with one of the poorest negatives to one of the greatest masterpieces in photography. It is all about Blood, Sweat, Tears and Foil. About 30-40 years ago I read in National Geographic about a photographer whose gear was stolen in Africa. She went to small store, bought all the instant cameras (film in a paper housing) and went to her assignment. Guess what? Her photos were published by NG. Imagine Rubens changing brushes because a new hair was discovered.

What exactly is the problem with the lens selection for the Z line of cameras, the only lenses missing are telephoto lenses, for landscape "which I don't do" it looks like Nikon has it covered with the Z line, and you can still use the still great F mount glass, be it from Nikon or Sigma or Tamron. I myself use the D850 and D500 paired to my Sigma 500mm f4 sport and Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 "pretty much bird and wildlife photography", and still use the fantastic Nikon 70-200VR2.8 which was introduced in 2003.
My question is when did the D850 stop being a fantastic landscape camera, oh it didn't.

$20 intervalometer? It’ll do even longer exposures.
Lenses - I’m sure they will have a full complement eventually. Just takes time, right? I came back to photography after digital was well on its way. I bought into the Sony system and am happy but it was the same problem at that time - not a huge native selection.

@@PereaPhotography But you said “This is huge!”? I’m not looking for an argument. You do beautiful work and cameras are tools. When I was much younger my dream was a Nikon F Photomic FTN but that never happened.

@@davidburchettephotography6513 thanks man! Sorry it was a quick response haha. I’m on the road. I’m trying to remember a time where I’ve taken a longer exposure than 10 minutes. I guess if you do, then the feature is not that great. It is for me, but maybe you might not feel the same, which is ok too haha… I guess. Cheers!

When a "point" for the Zii is absurdly described as "absolutely Crazy! absolutely Huge!" something as irrelevant as not having to press a button when finishing a photo in bulb mode, then you know this newer is exactly the same as the D850, except with a crappy EVF(3.69mp!!! WTF!) and worse autofocus. Ill defintaley be sticking to the D850 for now.

The first 5 seconds are fake news, but the rest of the video is great. I hope that the longer you have/use your Z7ii, the more you will like it.

@@PereaPhotography Okay, now that I've actually watched everything.... I can't wait to see/hear your thoughts after a bit more outings. Especially if you do some more hybrid use. I've found my Z6 to be more consistant with focusing on my face when vlogging than the Z7ii which was not what I expected. I forgot about the extended shutters when we chatted, but I agree. I love leaving my remote trigger at home.

You claim "I don´t do wild life photography but no stop to justify the "upgrade" from D850 because wild life features... Say you upgrade because you want to have the last camera on the market, period.. The only feature I miss is in my D850 is + 30 sec timer. There's no picture or Time lapse you can make with a Z7 II or whatever Z camera, I can´t do with a D850, and you know it.
By the way, D850 is the best DSLR camera ever made, Period.
    Cheers
