An Agony of Effort, The True Story of Bloodborne - Part I: Inspirations
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 бер 2024
- Bloodborne draws heavily on the lives, creative works, philosophy and scientific discoveries of the great thinkers and figures of the 1700-1800s. Veiled by gothic and cosmic horror, the game is a massive allegory for medical study and practice of a bygone era. In this introductory episode, we focus on key inspirations and establish the thesis of the series: Bloodborne depicts the nightmarish experience of Victorian-era illness and disease and the dehumanizing nature of medical research, surgery and addiction.
Much as Victorian medical scholars strove to understand the inner workings of the human body to gain mastery over death, Bloodborne's scholars are attempting to overcome the mortal bonds of humanity and become Great Ones.

time to start binging this again
I am SO GLAD you have these on your dedicated channel again. Glad you’re back here, and I hope your personal stuff got sorted and take care of efficiently and wholesomely.
Thank you for being you.
Very much appreciated. I'm glad to be back and grateful for the kindness and understanding.
What happened? They’re all re-uploaded?
I want you to know how important this series of lore is to me. I thought maybe I had dreamed it or just got too involved in my own mind when I couldn’t find it again. But as a disabled person, as a person who’s gone through surgery after surgery, as someone who has spent so much time sick or in hospitals, Bloodborne always spoke to me where the other FromSoft games haven’t. And I never really got why because I’m not done great fan of gothic horror, or even Lovecraftian horror. I’ve never even played the actual game! Yet I devour content, watch all the videos and playthroughs, think about it all the time. And I think it’s this link through medical metaphors that I didn’t really understand was why I vibed with this game so hard. You blew my mind wide open from the beginning and now I can’t even accept some other interpretations of game elements as I just see them as wrong. I am so glad you reuploaded your videos. I don’t know what made you nuke your channel but know you have some really dedicated fans ❤
Your story makes me glad to be able to share these videos again. I'm sure you've got a different perspective than most because of those personal experiences, which had to have been so challenging, so I can imagine how the medical viewpoint resonates with you. Honestly, thanks for your feedback and your willingness to open up. This gives me a lot of motivation
I always thought Bloodborne was a prophecy about bill gates and the vaccine, but you made me realize it came from way deeper!
I’m like that with some stuff too, haven’t played or watched it first hand but I love the lore or deep dives. Five nights at Freddy’s seems like a garbage game but the lore is so interesting to me. Same with undertale. ❤
I am so happy to see you back. I was devastated when you left. I hope that whatever happened has been resolved to all satisfaction. Time to re-watch the whole series!
It's been said a lot already but glad you're back. This is the coolest lore series on UA-cam and I hope it explodes when Bloodborne inevitably gets a sequel/remaster.
Been hoping you'd come back. Welcome back to Yharhham Hunter
Even finished Bloodborne 10+ times, spent 600+ hrs, I couldn’t see these many details which interestingly linked with real historical sources about architectures, inventions, characters, etc. HUGE respect!
You showed the autopsy incisions and I looked down at my hunter's mark tattoo on my ankle immediately.
I want a bb tattoo badly, the hunters mark, or maybe a Maria tattoo. Something with the iconic hunters hat. Idk. Hunters mark on the ankle sounds dope tho, very cool ❤
Welcome back to the operation room, doctors! It's time for another dive into the cadaver, which is this lore !
Feel free to not answer but why did you delete them the first time? It's literally a must-see series for bloodborne fans 👏 🙌
Honestly, it wasn't something I wanted to do, but in order to handle some pretty serious IRL responsibilities, I just felt like it was the necessary and right thing to do at the time to ensure I was giving my full and undivided attention to family who needed help. Life circumstances changed significantly in early 2023. I didn't know how long that would last. By early 2024, I was no longer needed in that capacity, so I felt like it was OK to take up the Bloodborne lore hobby again. I genuinely felt bad about the sudden departure. In hindsight, I should have given some advanced notice. That's my bad. But I know that shutting down the channel at that time was the right thing to do for me and others in my life.
With that said, I'm glad to be back spitballing ideas with you all. Here's to continued lore hunting.
@@TheCharredThermos Whilst I do sympathize with your recently trialling times, I still feel a bit unsure why the Channel HAD to be deleted instead of just letting it remain dormant until such a time you were ready to start uploading again. Anyway, it's great to see you return. Maybe now Last Protagonist will get to see your videos live and offer his Insight (Pun intended).
@@TheCharredThermos❤ You must do what you feel is right. In your absence we had time to digest ‘Agony of Effort’ and gave us a refresh to the Lore. Laurence is the Key. We must Understand
Love to see this series back, it truly is amazing work
I'm just here to say that I greatly appreciate what you did with this series and am glad to see you are back.
Over everything I gotta say these ideas you put forth are SURPRISINGLY relevant to the themes and general feel of Bloodborne, even for a layman like myself.
The KING has returned!
Thank you for coming back, hope all is well
Each time I come back to this series and hear "I'm not Vaati" I always say to myself "Thank God"
Great deep dive, made me appreciate medicine in a way that I hadnt done before.
You have a NEW SUBSCRIBER .😊 LOVE These videos as I also love gothic architecture, and Victorian era clothing. So you can imagine how much I love bloodborne. I also suffer from depression, anxiety and PTSD from childhood abuse. Bloodborne is helping me deal with these issues by being difficult but fair and q spectacular sense of achievement when overcoming a difficult boss.
Awesome to see this back. Thank you for a fresh look from an almost 10 year old game!
I'm glad you're back, this docuseries blew my mind, your hard work is appreciated.
My goodness what a welcome surprise to see you back Charred Thermos! I don't mind saying that I missed this deep dive something terrible! I never had the guts to make video essays about my own rabbit holes of thought on lore, history, and symbolism and all those other things I wasted money on a humanities degree for. I hope to keep listening to your masterpiece for a long while :)
Thanks, that's really nice of you to say :) I'm glad to be back. And if I've learned anything while throwing together these essays, it's that there's a huge Bloodborne lore community that has dozens of different audiences. If you change your mind about making video essays, I wouldn't be surprised if you find a group of enthusiasts who'd appreciate your take.
Hey man don’t be apprehensive to put your thoughts out there. We’d all love to hear more takes on Bloodborne lore that aren’t just “Uhh lovecraft lol”
Thank you so much for uploading these again, and I hope you're doing well! My bloodborne head-canon just wouldn't be complete without these videos
This was an absolutely fascinating watch!
I recently read The Way of All Flesh by Ambrose Parry, a medical mystery drama set in Edinburgh in 1847. It features the Royal Infirmary, experimentation with anaesthetics, surgeries, and lots of traumatic births. I then (finally) played The Old Hunters (finished it just yesterday, actually) and was struck by how much connective tissue I saw between the Research Hall and the events of the book.
Abolsutely thrilled to have been sent this video by a friend and definitely watching the rest soon!
Edit: I'd change the typo but it's making me laugh.
Nice, thanks for checking out the episode. The rest of the videos on the channel remain in that vein. Appreciate you mentioning The Way of All Flesh, too. I'll have to check it out. Sounds like something I'd really enjoy!
Thank you for this! Saved someone else's playlist after yours was gone but I'm glad I can subscribe to the original source again! Hope this channel never goes away. I did comment on your earlier works but I can't remember anything now but hopefully any thoughts will comes back to me on the re-watch. :)
Just wanted to put what I said in a comment in the first cycle of this channel: to me, this series is on part with The Paleblood Hunt. They are two sides of the same insightful coin required to understand the themes and lore of this incredible work.
Binge crew ❤ these videos are top tier, man.
Thank you so much for reuploading these. I've watched it through at least four or five times and it's such a well thought out perspective on this game. Hope things are going better for you personally, Im happy for you that that you feel well enough to come back ❤
Great to see you back man ❤
This intro reminds me of Machiavelli. Like we re all princes. Chapeau bas
Great to see these back on youtube, thank you for uploading again
This is still the best. 💙
I'm so glad you're back.
The goat is back
The return of the king
I'm so glad you reuploaded these. I was binging through them every few weeks or so after watching the first one. Both my husband and I are very deeply into Bloodborne lore and we agree that your work has been some of the most significant this community has ever seen. Very glad to hear your life circumstances have improved and I'm rejoicing!
Very kind of you, thanks :) I appreciate your understanding
Omg!!!! The king is back!!!!!!
Time to rewatch this
glad you're back
I’m so glad to see this back!!
Dude this is genuinely one of the best videos I’ve ever seen.
It's back!!!
Exceptional work.
Took me a while to restart, but I'm glad to get back to this again. Let's see if my thoughts have changed since last time :D
(Super glad to have these, and you back
Welcome back king ! Glad to see you doing well and uploading again your work of art
DUDE I've been looking for these videos! Thank you for bringing them back!
Marvelous work!🎉
So glad you’re back!
I really appreciate the work you have done, I've rewatched it so many times. Welcome back :)
Yay! Its back up! I still think you should publish a book. I'd buy it and an audio version too😊
If I could avoid copyright infringement and could find a great artist who'd be interested in illustrating something like that, it'd be a great project!
I'm glad to see you uploading again. Time to watch it all again. It really makes me want to buy another playstation to play bloodborne again. My old one broke.
Love u man hope ur doin well
Gg great video series bro thank you.
i missed your content holy shit 😢 welcome back good hunter
Found my new audio book!
HOOOOOLY FUCK YOU'RE BACK
It makes sense that you are talking bout Edinburgh because its what Fromsoft called Yahrnam in the code behind the scenes and codename.
How do you know this?
@kagarii other youtube vids. I think zullie or someone else in the same kinda vein.
@kagarii I have a lot ov soulsborne trivia in my head.
thank fuck you are back
Sorry if I missed a reference to this, but you can hear Gerhman having trouble breathing, which would make him all the more similar to Stevenson.
Only a few minutes in and I'm already vibing with you. I initially lost interest in the dark souls lore community because they were overly fixated on the superficial elements of the characters and events and didn't really look into the subtextual metaphors and the allegorical ontology of the worlds being built, which is what's really fascinating about Miyazaki's creations. I guess that tracks though, because what I've found is that these games are basically attempts to create a modern interpretation of pre-modern mythological narratives, which are ALSO heavily bogged down by mythical literalism and people getting waaaay too caught up in the hijinks of Loki and Zeus, while detractors mock the foolish heathens for believing in such obviously made up fairy tales- and in so doing, both of them completely miss the point of these mythological frameworks. So I guess that speaks to Miyazaki's success in inventing new mythologies that people do the same thing with his work.
I think the reason Bloodborne in particular is so punchy and fascinating is because unlike Dark Souls' ancient european mythological inspirations, cosmic horror has much more of a connection to modernity, and our current condition. Per my interpretation, it emerged as the first new pseudo-mythology in the wake of the christian god being killed by modernity. The religion was still nominally around but the desacralized conditions of industrial capitalism totally destroyed the material conditions that birthed and sustained Abrahamic religion, the mysticism inherent in nature and such, and cosmic horror came as a perhaps entirely subconscious response to the broadly felt realization that humanity was alone in godless and uncaring universe. It's a modern version of a mythological meta-narrative giving form and character to socially felt concerns stemming from the shared material condition of the people who felt them, so for someone like miyazaki who really digs into this mythological psychology, it's incredibly fertile ground for a really wild, dark, and cool story that resonates more easily with us because it's basically describing the same condition as it's audience: Our infancy in a godless universe that could contain anything from disinterest to existential hostility, but probably not some overarching protective force as we previously comforted ourselves to think.
This is beautifully articulated and captures an even more lofty meta theme of the game that I don't really address in the series, but it's one that I think you nailed. The gods of Bloodborne are dead, so is their messiah. The antiquated "faith," if you will, of the old regime has given way to Mensis and the Choir, which are far more modern and scientific in their approach to transcendence. The gothic gives way to the cosmic in the progression of the story, just as mysticism gives way to empiricism. You state it better than I do. I really like your take here.
Insightful
I'm having a real Mandela effect going on. I swear I've been watching this series in an 18 video Playlist for weeks. Then i go to search it like i usually do and couldn't see it. Look at my history not there. Search the real name and find this 14 video Playlist with a bit of a change... I'm confused but glad to have my nighttime mental reading back as i so enjoy the allegory interpretation on bloodborne.
Charred Thermos here (who’s the original creator) deleted the series and another person (Dark Sun Gwendolyn) reuploaded it. Now that the original creator is back and reuploaded it himself, DSG deleted his uploads. Your history probably had DSG’s videos.
That makes perfect sense. My whole world was very confused when I saw all the comments about welcome back! Loved the entire series, so I'm glad to see the original creator getting my views.
The most convincing bloodborne lore theory.
We are ao back
one thing that i am very iffy on in the this series is language and translations. the english translation of bloodborne (a japanese game) is already not as good as it could be and sometimes downright wrong. i just find it hard to believe that miyazaki and his japanese team read english papers and poems that also had to probably be translated into japanese, put into the game, then translated back to english would not be completely lost in translation. so when talking about the similarities and how things are written, it makes no sense to compare anything since the translations would be a complete mess.
This is a fair critique. In later videos, I do a better job looking at the Japanese text and cross checking with various translations. In hindsight, I should have done more of that from the get-go, but alas.
@@TheCharredThermos overall though, this series is phenomenal and so eye-opening. the connections you make, Im sure i would never had thought of, and responding to a comment like mine with understand shows your character; keep doing what you’re doing!
That's... Diego Luna and Nicholas Cage! 😲 ua-cam.com/video/SkNVKkYpgVU/v-deo.htmlsi=jj6ccSrhqqkjeV9P&t=558
