I know I'm commenting too late for it to be relevant but here goes anyway :) Any lens that extends while zoomin or focusing is not truly weather sealed. When the lens extends, it's volume increases and more air needs to get inside the lens. The air will eventually bring some dust and/or moisture in the lens. Whether that's a problem or not in a long run probably depends on how the lens is designed on the inside. Anyway, I wouldn't call any extending lens weather sealed. Nice comparison, thanks.
I got the sigma for around 360 with gift cards. Being new to photography, I couldn’t justify spend 1100 while learning. I like my sigma a lot, but I do wish to try the 90mm someday.
My Sony 90mm broke after a slightly bumping into a table, it wasn't fixable according to Sony. The brand new replacement started to show issues with the AF after a couple of months, so be aware of the issues with these lenses in particular, I'm about to buy the Sigma 70mm.
This is one of those times where it is easy to justify spending more to get the very best. I love my 90mm, easily one of the best lenses I have ever owned. I bought my copy used on Ebay for $800, boxed like new.
So in my area currently there is someone selling a Sony 90 mm but they want $800.... But I could get a sigma 70 for 300 asking price. Probably could get it for our closer to around 240 with negotiating. Would you still try to get the Sony or would you prefer the sigma at the cost?
will the sigma 70mm macro art for sony work with 3rd party electronic macro extensions by companies like meike/neewer to gain more magnification? asking coz of the wired by focus thing. if anyone knows or have seen this lens work with extension tube please help me out with this info. TIA
hello Stefan, do you think this FE 90mm F2.8 Macro would be strong as Sigma 85mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art for Portrait work, because budget for both is too high, I need to chose one between them, and other option to complete my set is Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG for ambient and scenes, so what you suggest me?
I've been asked to shoot some jewelry photography using a lightbox. I have never tried product photography and I was looking for a macro lens. Would the Sigma be the best for this for the price?
Just FYI: At the end of the Build Quality section, you have your text overlays reversed. The text for the Sony is overlaid on the Sigma lens, and vice versa. :)
I can't say anything about the sony as I only own the sigma. What I will say is that the sharpness ok the sigma is mind blowing, autofocus is useless for macro (who uses that anyways). The missing OIS is also dearly needed
I have both of them. Sony is better one in terms of stability, autofocus and overall usability. Sigma is a bit different in terms of experience. The image quality from both of them are almost similar. Both are very sharp but Sony wins because of the OSS and blur free images during handheld shoot. Autofocus is a pain in Sigma. Even manual focus is better with Sony especially with the clutch mechanism focus ring. Sigma is acceptable considering the price, but if money is not a concern then Sony would be the best choice.
i used to have 3rd party macro lens back when i still used Nikon. I had Tamron 90mm Macro. same story, good sharp and everything, but painfully slow focus like the sigma. So, it was no brainer when i switched to Sony®, and get Sony's native macro lens. i love my Sony® 90 Macro.
So which one is best for you?
90mm all day
Sony easily. Worth every penny

I own the 90mm and it’s mindblowing. Great comparison btw.
Thanks friend

A great lens that will probably end up teaching you better. Good choice!
Whew! Glad I bought the Sony 90mm- had it before I went full frame. It was my first 'special' lens that cost over a thousand poutine dollars!
One of my first serious lenses too. Love that thing!

Sorry to hear! Haven't heard of many issues with the 90.
@@StefanMalloch check out eBay, you'll see lots of them being sold for parts and such.
I have a question on Sigma 70mm lens. What happens if you leave the lens in manual mode, then power off. Will the lens retract? Or stay? Thank you.
Retract

Planning to do another review comparing the Sony FE 90mm D2.8 Macro vs the new Sigma 105mm F2.8 DG DN?

You'll probably lose AF capabilities but you're shooting in Manual Focus at that point anyways.
@@StefanMalloch Thank you, i really appreciate and enjoy your videos :)

Great for the price. AF is lacking but you'll probably be using Manual anyways. If you can swing it, invest in the Sony. You won't be sorry
I regret of selling 90 G, I'll get it again
Another good comparison thanks.
sony is the sharpest lens ever according to dxomark (I know that they are not updating lens database from 3 years but still it means a lot)
Very impressive in my experience
pawelmod there’s not dxomark review on the sigma yet, some MTF charts put sigma art resolution higer than sony’s

Same for the Pros and Cons at the end. Text is reversed, which makes it all a little confusing.
I have the Sony and just love it
Great choice!

big price difference. I'm broke waiting for sigma lens to arrive
please cancel the very disturbing music as it serves no purpose.
