How to Grow Carrots in Containers || Black Gumbo

- It is the simplest method, not too sparse, not too packed in. Grow 14-20 carrots in a 12 inch pot with just some potting mix. I'll show you how I do it. I'll be sowing seeds for Danver's Half Long, Parisienne, and Amarillo. Container gardening is a great way to supplement your vegetable garden or to grow your own produce in confined places.
It's fall here, but this is the method you would use for any season when carrots are grown. In zone 9a, carrots can over-winter.
We'll post results in about two and a half to three months.
Here is the link to the intensive method I mentioned, I encourage you to go have a look, this is a good method if you prefer it:

I appreciate your plain speaking and common sense knowledge and explanation of the subject. Without all the cash others do thank you.
“Without a bunch of nonsense” 😂 love it!
Hi my name Tony from Southern California I'm 70yrs old I do bkyd gardening fruit trees I do learn from videos growing vegetables just for fun thanks.
I am 66 years old and I am still learning how to do many things. Glad you involve your son. Children need to know how to grow food and know where it comes from.
Thanks Deborah, my son is very much part of our gardening, even if I can;'t get him in every video.
I love how you include Sam in your gardening. My son set up raised beds in his new home two years ago and I get so much pleasure sharing gardening with him. He and his wife recently announced that they will have a son next August. I wrote to him that I hope in his future that he will get to enjoy the pleasure a dad gets when sharing gardening with his son. (And the pleasure of a grandfather sharing with his grandson!)
I appreciate to-the-point instruction... some fluff, but not too wordy. I'm older than Deborah and was really active in the garden 40 years ago, but due to lots of travel, I only got back into it three years ago. It's been a fun-filled refresher course.
Nice reference to Home Grown Veg. Dude has a green thumb the size of Texas. He's the master of container growing.
I followed your video this fall I'm I'm Georgia. I planted carrot seeds in two Rubbermaid containers back in November and they did great! Never planted anything by seed before. Never planted vegetables at all before last year. My carrots did great. Bought seeds for compact carrots. Used seaweed fertilizer. Probably have two more meals worth in one container. Your videos are so helpful.
The potted carrots are all coming up now. The methods we employed are working. This is always an encouraging time when stuff works. :-)
How did these carrots turn out?
Is there a video of the growth?
Happy Holidays...
A really friendly guy putting his view across from the benefit of his own trial & error experience. We all learn a little bit more,
I’m upping my gardening game and teaching my son. Glad I found your channel.
I'm planting carrots for the first time... Can't wait to see them grow! 😊
Tried sowing carrott seeds in garden twice with little luck. I saw a few videos on growing carrots in pots and plan on doing the same. Videos with good gardening tips are the ones I enjoy. Thanks
I'm planning to grow Paris Market carrots in pots for the first time this year. I really appreciate this highly informative and great video! Exactly what I needed.
I love that your down to earth & I am growing indoors this year so I hope you do something indoor gardens too your really straight & to the point👍👍
You the man Brother Head. Love hanging out and learning too! How much better can that be?
Like your down to earth simple advice on your how to videos. I also appreciate that you share your failures. Thanks for keeping it informative but real.
I grew my first carrots earlier this year. I didn’t thin them and they grew all twisted together in one giant corkscrew. 😂 It looked cool and we ate most of them but I’ll definitely thin them next time.
I appreciate your videos; they’re very helpful.
I’m growing in pots for the first time… the sprouts are about an inch and I’m going to have to thin them but… they will still grow ok if I don’t? I mean the size even if twisted up… lol
When i thinned my carrots a few weeks back, i pulled out the weakest ones and replanted them. They are growing too!
I love your channel! I grew up gardening in Ohio, and after moving to south GA, I have a very difficult time gardening in this heat and humidity. This and a couple other southern channels are helping me overcome the climate differences so i can grow some FOOD!
Thanks!!
MOLLY the dog!!!
I am about to sow my first carrots - a purple variety - in subtropical Australia. I used to help my Dad in the garden growing up in England and he taught me a lot. I certainly get my love of plants and gardening and wild flowers from him. Thank you for sharing this. I do all my food growing in containers because I have poor, dry soil and rely in tanks for water. Also I am 81 years old so gardening on my verandah is a lot easier than in my hilly garden.
I'm very impressed with your videos. You seem to be a humble man wanting to share your passion, and I thank-you for this. I learn something new every day from people like you.
I appreciate that!
I like a mix of both. I think you balance fairly well. I think the most powerful draw for me is your voice though. I think you'd do quite well on radio. Oh yeah, we live in pretty much the same zone and I've only been growing food for a year so I try to copy the stuff you do that I want to try
I just like the way to do your videos. The way your doing them is the way I like them. Your doing a great job. 👍👍
I started growing carrots in empty water bottles. So far, so good. I planted danvers half longs.
Love your humility and gardening tips 👌
Scott I love the preparation for growing carrots I have tried many times and never got any I have learned a lot about planting carrots I will prepare some the way you prepare yours I am living in linden town Guyana south America 🙏 thanks for sharing
Received the same free Amarillo Carrots from Baker Creek and debated planting because of my poor soil. You inspired me to try them in 5 gallon buckets here in south TX. Wish me luck.
956??
I enjoy your "get down to business" videos, and not to long. Definitely informative and much appreciated. Thank you.
My container carrots story: moved to TX - Pearland 7 yrs ago, into our 1st floor apartment and months later had a small container garden started in railing boxes and pots with some beautiful carrots (also Bakers Creek!) almost ready to harvest as well as cherry tomatoes. Some idiot directly above on the 3RD FLOOR decides to empty his fishing cooler of salt water by pouring it over his balcony railing. You can imagine the rest...dirt flew hard, even up onto our patio walls along with my budding harvest. 😳 I could have cried! Laugh now, but at the time....😢
Oh man, apartment neighbors and apartment life must be the worst. I remember those days, we had neighbors who fought like cats and dogs. I never grew anything on my balcony though, there was no sun there. :-)
What do i want to see here hmmm to the point not expensive gardening 👍
THANK YOU. I WAS JUST LOOKING FOR SOME ONE WHO HAD PLANTED CARROT IN CONAINERS AND LOW AND BEHOLD I FOUNG YOU AND FELL IN LOVE WITH YOUR ....EVERYTHING I GUESS. ANYWHO I AM NOW A SUBSCRIBER.
Fab video! I watch from southern England.I enjoy all the how to stuff.I have a tiny garden so I'm looking for tips for growing cheaply in a small space. All the best!
I am growing everything in pots Southern California used to be very sunny and hot and I will start everything in March. We have another day of solid rain at night will my plants be ruined.
Enjoy your video I subscribe
I'm growing everything in pots your right the carrots are coming in a very slow?
The problem with the Internet is everyone contradicts himself someone said people should water every day some people say every other day some people say once a week it's all hid and missI think
And of course, then mother nature takes over with all the rain. I'm just hoping everything will not be ruined.
You're doing an awesome job with your videos. I wouldn't change a thing. I tried carrots last year on my deck without much success. After watching this I will try again next spring!
It will be nice to have all those carrots to enjoy. There are so many great types of carrots.
I haven’t harvested mine yet, next couple weeks here before a hard frost. My granddaughter has been watching them, she’s 7. I told her she can come over and pick them! Thanks for this video, I’ve not tried them in pots, I have three raised beds, about three ft off the ground, 4x4 beds, my hubby made them for me four yrs ago, really saved my back, lol!
What a blessing to share gardening with a grandchild!
I definitely fall under "How to" category ;)
Same here! I'm new at this and I appreciate any tips I can get!
Plenty of the How-to planned, especially for spring.
I enjoy your videos 💜
Thanks very much. :-)
Good information. Would love a follow-up video to show the results of your efforts. Thanks for the Vlog!
I was excited to see you have a Corgi helping you in the garden. We have two, fun dogs to have around.
My carrots didn't come up, we planted them in big black pots here in NW WA, where it's still cool in June. I think we many have covered them too deeply.
Trying again!
I love the how to and learning along with you. I also love the family aspect with your son.
Thanks Cynthia, hope to keep up all aspects of the channel. I'm learning too, so its always good to share what I learn so we all can learn.
Been following you this year. Enjoy watching and learning. Going to plant a lot of stuff. Hoping for beginners luck.
Oh, and Scott, I like and find useful both types of videos. Thanks for sharing your trials, knowledge, and the fun stuff!
Carrots grow well in pots. You just really gotta be gentle watering them. They break super easy till they get a little size to them. Pelleted seeds from Sow Easy seeds really helps with spacing. They make each carrot seed about the size of a BB. Just gotta keep the soil mix sifted really well and keep it moist until they are about an inch tall. Then be super careful when watering and you will get nice carrots. Bone meal makes nice carrot food BTW
yes, i love the simplicity of this channel
I think I fall into both categories. Thanks for sharing your gardening knowledge. 🥕🥕
Thankful for your help! Loved the video!
I watch to see what other people do and why. I’m in Atlanta and so naturally gravitate toward high heat and humidity gardening channels. I’m also a native Texan-I like to check in on the homeland on occasion. Great channel! For what it’s worth I also broadcast carrot seeds in a5 gallon bucket. The reason is caterpillars or slugs usually “thin” for me...
This will be our first year to plant carrots since my one attempt that didn't turn out very well. I'm glad I ran across this video. I think it will help a lot. Our plan was to use containers for that this time, so this will be a help to us. Thank you.
I like both kinds of videos. If I'm looking for something specific I'll search people I watch/subscribe too first. Otherwise I watch videos from my subscriptions as I have time. I'm getting ready to grow some carrots (its a good time of the year for us too) and am going to try this!
My carrots are promising so yeah, go for it! Thanks for your comment, I too watch my subscriptions just to keep up. I appreciate you, thanks.
Just discovered your channel. Subscribed and rang the "ALL" bell. Thanks for the tutorial.
Awesome, thank you!
I enjoy every video I see of this beautiful channel and I learn, I hope to be able to sow them soon, I already have the seeds 😊😊😊😊carrots
I’m planting carrots today. Thank you
I have enjoyed many of your videos. We aren't in similar zones but I have learned quite a bit from you. I'd love to see you make a video where you go back with a part 2 at harvest time maybe add a link either in the description or in the video and let us know if there were any glitches or the success status at harvest.
Great suggestion!
I like all your videos, all. Keep up the good work. God bless
Well done!
Your videos got me started and I see the relaxation and the reward in container gardening. (tomato's, Bell Peppers and Basil so far)
Good stuff preacher! I just planted some Oxhearts, Kalidiscopes, and Sweet Orange carrots. Can't wait to get them on my family's dinner table!
This is just so wholesome and peaceful ☺️
Thanks, we try to be peaceful.
I get me seeds from baker creek to... I got the Amarillo ones as a free gift aswell this spring. They came out great!
This year we are going to try 15-20 gallon grow bags to grow carrots. We also have a spot in our raised beds. Good video !
Thanks Scott. Great info on planting in a container.
I am very new to all gardening and I am a sponge that wants to learn. Blessings
Like to try the pot method that way I can save space for the deeper roots planting such as tomatoes peppers and such.
Love your videos
How tos and clear explanations are what I like.
Another great episode mr Scott! Here in zone 3 we are in snow already but I still love to see how you guys are planting your fall crops. When the spring comes,I think I will give the carrots in a bucket a try! Love your content. Keep up the good work!
Beautiful garden 😍
I appreciate your hard work, yet I like less talk more action! Keep on Gardening!
I appreciate the short videos...thankyou
Perfect. Just perfect.
Love your channel especially the how to vids, last year was my first season with just a few peppers plants and a tomato and potato, tomato was a complete fail lol, this year doin the same but also a earth garden with some raised beds for corn, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes, squash, carrots. Really like ur down to earth style so I'll probably ask alot of ?? Your way.
Keep on gardening and ask away!
Learning so much from your videos, especially during this quarantine, thank you so much. Started my garden last week
I really enjoy your videos, I’m a new Gardner, planning and building my first garden for this spring. I also from Texas, north Texas zone 8 in the dfw area.
Plntd my carrots in pots 2nd wk of aug they are doing great
Lynn Stanton where do you live?
@@smc130 in ms
Lynn Stanton I lived in Jackson MS when I was in middle school 1961-1965. Our climates are very similar so there’s hope for carrots here 🥕
@@smc130 jackson is a lot more south than me
I enjoy your channel in all aspects, for enjoyment and for learning. This is very helpful to me. I need to thin out some seedlings and I am about to check that video out...thank you!
This is a great idea!!! 👍 I'm going to try this with parsnips too. Last time I grew parsnips here in Central Florida they were skinny and a few had holes in them. So this may work. 😀
I like your videos and I subscribed but please make them a little longer and show the harvest ❤️
Tried it. All sprouted 1st time ever.. not gonna thin them, just let em go i wanna see what happens. If nothing , well the bunny will enjoy them! Ty sir.
Good news! Thanks for letting us know it worked!
...will be pkanting carrots in pots in the coming days. . .thanks for the advise of labelling. . .i always plant some veges but no label amd can't remember when i planted it...
Coat the flaking pot with Modpoge. It seals it, but cover the bottom.
I am here because your in my zone. Oh and Phoebe. Sorry if I mispelled her name.
Love the content Scott.
I have 5 packets of free Amarillo Carrots and will be planting them with my Sugar Snaps
Phoebe is pleased that you spelled her name correctly. :-) About 10 years ago when my beds were on the other side of my yard, I grew Amarillo carrots. They did OK, my soil was pretty dense, and I pulled them too soon, but forgot about several. The next spring, I was digging in the bed and found a bunch of huge yellow carrots, and they were very delicious!
I planted the purple ones last week in your last technique from mi gardener seeds and the same ones u did from bakerscreek
I enjoy MIGardener, he's a good resource.
I enjoyed this video and I planted Parisiean carrots in a 2x3' planter when they became seedlings. They're growing well but after watching this video, I'm wondering if I should thin them out. I did once before I planted the seedlings. I'm looking for that video. I'm a newbie gardener this year so looking for all the help I can get.
You should thin carrots or they will not put on large roots, Use some fine scissors and just snip off the ones you want, leaving one plant per inch or so of space. You don't have to do it until they are a few inches tall. WHen they get bushy it is hard to separate them all.
Scott I love seeing your videos. Your son and dog warm my heart. My garden here in Houston has yielded very meager harvests. Discouraging. Your videos give me hope that I can grow more. I have never seen you swat a mosquito. How do you control mosquitoes in your yard?
I have them but I either wear repellant or edit the swats out of the video 😂
Nice video. I always seem to over seed carrots , then I am reluctant to thin. I think I will try your method as to spacing :) I used some old seed under my grow lights indoors and they did well because only a few came up. So spacing seems like it is very important with carrots. If you crowd them too much, they do not do well.
I’m going to try some carrots in a container. I started some about 3 weeks ago in a bed and something ate almost all the carrot tops..
A lot of growing and the garden
I saw one fella add his carrot seed (of a certain count for the size container) to a plastic cup half full of peat moss. He stirred and shook it to get a good mix then scattered it over the top of the soil in a container. He then just raked the soil with a forked trowel and watered them in. I guess there are many ways to skin a cat!
Thank you for posting this video on carrots. I have some seeds and I’m going to plant them in one of my leftover grow bags.
I have some cherry tomatoes that are just not getting ripe! I’m really frustrated. We live in zone 8 in south Texas.
Ooh, I have a bunch of grow bags. I need to see what will grow in them this fall.
I may try this next year, my ground is so stoney I don't think they would do very good.
Try "Pusa Rudhira", a red carrot variety from India. It is far more tender compared to "orange" carrots, but quite firm. You don't have to keep chewing it forever like the orange carrots.
Can you grow radishes the same way in the pot? I figure if you can grow carrots you can grow reddishes in a pot. I enjoyed your video thanks so much for sharing.
Yes you can!
Where is the follow up on this subject please??? I have looked and looked and cannot find out how your carrots in containers went. I saw the carrots in your raised bed but you did not mention the ones in containers. Is there a follow up?
Hi Terry, I don't remember in which video there was any follow up to these carrots in containers. Probably in one of the garden tour videos it was folded in. but to sum up, they grew fairly well but remained smaller than the carrots that were in the ground. The parisiennes did the best, they're the short round carrots.
Know this an older video, but what would happen if you put a clear bag over the pots until germination.
It would help retain moisture and a humid environment.
Live N of Dallas I think I planted my carrots to close?
Maybe so, but its a little hot for carrots if you planted them and they are growing now. They tend to grwo greenery instead of roots in the heat.
Great vid, esp for a newbie like me. Do you think I could harvest the carrots and then go right back in the same pot/soil for another quick planting?
Probably. Carrots would do better in the ground though f you have the option. I won' be doing carrots in pots again unless I used the method of that British guy I referenced in the video.
Scott Head thx for the advice. I will give them a shot in the container, I’m not afraid of a little failure. Up here in Joisey I have deer fox possum squirrel all waiting for me to put out a salad bar. Be well!
damn youtube was changed don't see the date posted anymore
