      "David", SONUFAGUN!!!! An honest-to-goshers "DS" Castmember actually posted here! Johnny Depp, Ben Cross, they'll NEVER, EVER be Barnabas; only your good friend from The Cast, Jonathan Frid, WAS Barnabas, just as J.G. Levitt and others, will NEVER be all of the "David Collins" reiterations, there's ONLY YOU! You have my profoundest gratitude, for playing such an ANNOYING twerp, so perfectly! I rank your child-actor talent, right up there, with Patty McCormack, Brittany Tiplady, Skip Homier, and Shirley Temple. PLEASE, my friend(?) don't be a STRANGER to UA-cam!

    In a TV interview, Jonathan Frid said this was one of his favourite scenes in the series and I can see why. It's very well written and well acted -- both characters being very polite to each other, and yet the dialogue is about a fight to the death, full of sinister intent and undertones. And of course the audience, knowing Barnabas's true nature, are thinking "man oh man, Burke, you don't know what danger you're putting yourself in right now!"

    LOVE Barnabas! I graduated from college with a 3.6GPA, but listening to Barnabas speak, he'll make you feel like you can't get past kindergarten. LOL Highly intelligent and educated. Love the way he chooses his words. I agree that you won't find characters this sophisticated on tv anymore.

    • @jackieomg7021
      @jackieomg7021 4 роки тому +2

      @@kevinpyne5808 It was very much scripted, and cue cards were often used. The shooting schedule was so tight, it would have been exceedingly difficult to achieve what needed to be accomplished in a scene with improvisation.

    For some strange reason, this always reminded me of the tavern meeting between Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton in "A Tale of Two Cities". Not so much sparring there, but the mood was rather intense, with a clear disdain on the part of Carton for the other fellow. Barnabas and Devlin, by contrast, have an equal animosity for one another. Brilliant dialog in a memorable scene with two great actors, Frid and George, to carry it off.

    I may be wrong, but I read on Jonathan's website that this is the scene from DS that he is most proud of! He says on his site something like: "What with the nervous tension in the air with Barnabas's lying and Frid's line memorization it brought believability to the scene." I know that is not exacttly what he said, but he was proud cuz he made no mistakes and thought the scene came off great. Jonathan is 84 and doing GREAT. I believe at this time that the character of Burke Devlin was being phased out simply because he had been mellowed out. The whole purpose of Burke was his obsession with bringing down the Collins family, but he would then become endeared to them in the wake of his engagement to Vicky. Suddenly, his relevance was gone.

      Also, a change in actors. Mitch Ryan was originally Burke Devin until shortly after the introduction of Barnabas and they did meet on screen once. Had he stayed, although this scene is powerful as it is, it would have been more so, as Mr. Ryan's Burke would have stared Barnabas down without a hint of hesitation.
