Ever since i was a child i wished that i would wake up and have the god given talent to be able to play an instrument like the rock stars. You sir are one of the lucky ones.
sounds great my friend....keepin' it alive still. You know the old musicians saying...."you don't stop playing because you got old...you get old when you stop playing" bravo!!
This by far was the greatest song Rush ever did. When they did this album they were trying to see how far their talents would take them. It's progressive rock/ rock fusion. I'm into that style of music and you are one of the best drummers I've ever heard. .
I used to have that same ride. When I was a teenager in the eighties, I learned this song with two friends. It was a hurdle but well worth it. Good job.
F'in AWESOME! Thanks Ray! I have not played drums on a lot of years but to try this tune and record it is a testament to your talent. La Villa is one tough tune! I think your style is all your own! Keep posting these Rush tunes. How about hemispheres - that one is a nightmare!
It's so easy to forget how technically challenging this song is watching Neil play, and it's actually refreshing watching someone else play it and you fucking killed it man!
Very impressive! I usually don't comment on UA-cam videos, but wow... Best version of this song by a drummer not named Peart or Portnoy that I've ever seen. Bravo!
Nice Job. A lot of "Rush" tribute drummers and bands fall somewhat short of the mark. There are a few exceptions and you are one of them. Color me impressed.
For anyone that is just beginning to learn drums: Start with Ringo Starr, not Neil Peart, Buddy Rich or Ray Harber. Walk before you run. I keep coming back to this video and it never stops impressing me.
I love that Neil Peart signature ride pattern. Here and in many other songs. I've noticed I mimic it whenever I'm slapping "ride lines" on my knees. Too bad I don't have a drum set. Crazy good cover too!
I was a "wanna-be" drummer back in my day and all I can say is excellent job. Only in my dreams could I pull that song off as well as you. Thanks for the show!
I'm not ashamed to admit that I teared up a bit at your brilliant recreation! My friend and I spent countless hours back in the 80s trying to figure out how the professor did those parts and finally decided that he was some sort of super alien and gave up! You F**KING rock! By the way, thanks for proving that you're human with that slightly sloppy footwork around 5:20. Otherwise I would have had to label you as a super alien as well!
Uh, for assholes saying you're "not being that close to Neil", I'd say you rocked that shit! Screw peeps for noting your "misses"! I love your drumming and your passion to even TRY to cover such a song says volumes... LOVED IT and keep hittin' them skins!!!!!! You are a damn good drummer. Nuff said.
Right on man aaaaweeesome job!! I enjoyed this song as one of my favorites for over 25 years since I got into Rush. Neil is hard to catch but you are spot on.
+Mark Autrey And if any haters out there want to play, then I want your cover of this exact song on video. Don't knock this guy or his grip. If you can do better then show us your stuff.
id just like to say great cover.i can get right up to 6:43 then i just loose it. that little jazzy part always messes me up. the fills right at 7 are great! awesome job man! keep up the awesome work.
Michael Fisk Believe it or not, I'm on the cover of Exit Stage Left! Front row baby! My absolute favorite band... ever since I heard 2112, I was hooked. I know it didn't go over that well as far as sales and air play on the radio, but I also went bonkers over Caress of Steel. The Necromancer and The Fountain of Lamneth are the shit, man. I could just as easily listen to side one of 2112 all day too. I LOVE Discovery... when man (Lerxt/Alex) finds the guitar! A true masterpiece... but Rush has what I would consider many songs that I would consider masterpieces. The guitar work in By-Tor & the Snowdog is out of this world, IMHO. Always an incomparable 3-man band. Not embarrassed at all to say I shed quite a few tears when I first heard that Neil had passed away. 😭 RIP Neil. Always will be terribly missed. 🤳🙏🥀🕊️💫🇨🇦
Great job, Ray. There's a guy (channel) on UA-cam called Astrotama..I don't think he ever leaves his basement - he's VERY solid too. It's extremely hard to cover Peart...
@fallout new vegas lonesome road dlc ...got that right. No one can name 3 drummers better than the Professor...let alone 30! "Hold the Red Star proudly high in hand".
I can see where @TRayner is coming from. It's noticeable on the first section on the song from 2:20. I think it's just really easy to get carried away and as a result it can sound slightly ahead of itself. Nothing wrong with your performance itself, it just comes with the territory of playing an insane track like this and syncing it with the original recording. You wouldn't know if your drums were soloed. Even Rush themselves had to record this in three sections. Top notch stuff.
Your high hat timing improved when you started playing the back beat. Tough tune but fun to play, had my go round with it about 20 yrs ago. Good job. That's a tough pocket to relax in!
Hey Ray you nailed it this is probably by far Rush most difficult piece to play on drums if you can play this you can play any song by Rush or even Dream Theater because this is some serious composition and technical stuff. One last thing, the professor would be proud.
+Jeff Pom Thanks Jeff, yeah I don't worry about it...Thanks for the compliment, and yes it took a long time to get this song where I have it now...years really! When I was younger I thought I could play Rush songs, it wasn't till I started doing these UA-cam videos back in 2007ish that I realized I had A LOT of work to do. Learning this stuff helped me become a better drummer in general, for my own bands...not just a Neil imitator (although this is still my favorite stuff to play lol) Anyway, "Ass clowns" I like that...lol reminds me of Michael from Office Space! lol
+Ray Harber Glad you don't take the BS personally. As a musician, I've learned there is always going to be someone out there that either A) Doesn't like your style B) Puts down other drummers because of jealousy and C) Doesn't know what their talking about, period..lol. How often do you practice? Do you have a practice routine you stick too and if so, what do you work on (ie: rudiments, speed, timing)? I ask because I took a hiatus for several years and just got back in the saddle in June and am always looking to improve my chops. I'm getting there; however, still feel like I'm shaking some rust off. Plus, I would very much value your feedback after watching you play like a beast! :) Hope all is well, man!
+Ray Harber Musicians who try to clown on other musicians are the biggest clowns of all. Shit sounds tight dude and that's all that matters. Rush is one of those few bands made up of some of the all-time most skilled players of their instrument and whether it's guitar, bass or drums, if you can pull off Rush songs with any degree of accuracy you're a beast in my book. Let the assholes talk all they want. Bottom line is you at least had the balls to attempt it and even bigger balls to post it for everyone to see. Keep it up broseph.
thanks for the suggestions. great job on the covery btw. really Ive been playing for about 15 years now and rush is my favorite band but i still cant play alot of his stuff.
I have watched a few covers of this song now and have to say that your ride cymbal sounds the most in tune to the original sound. Also, you were incredible!
@Rabbi Goldschlong Alex Lifeson is still..in his 60's, one of the best guitarists on the planet. Say what you will, but if you disagree... you're wrong.
That was great, I’m asking myself what kind of idiot would give a thumbs down to such a solid performance. Yeah the drums were raw, without the studio mix, but what a solid demonstration of skill. Anyone who plays drums, and knows the Rush catalogue will definitely appreciate your performance. Awesome man! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤘🏼
I played Zildjian for 24 years, they're a great cymbal maker, and I have a lot of respect for them, but I just needed a change! Also, theres a certain special "spiritual" quality to Paistes.
Ever since i was a child i wished that i would wake up and have the god given talent to be able to play an instrument like the rock stars. You sir are one of the lucky ones.
That brought tears to my eye's and ears. Fantastic. RIP Mr. Neil Peart. Rush Forever. Thank you, Alex and Geddy.
sounds great my friend....keepin' it alive still. You know the old musicians saying...."you don't stop playing because you got old...you get old when you stop playing" bravo!!
This was absolutely one of the most well performed Rush drum covers I have ever seen would’ve loved to hear that in person.
This by far was the greatest song Rush ever did. When they did this album they were trying to see how far their talents would take them. It's progressive rock/ rock fusion. I'm into that style of music and you are one of the best drummers I've ever heard. .

*drools in awe* great work and the old bell sounds great. Really like the new ride too.
It's so easy to forget how technically challenging this song is watching Neil play, and it's actually refreshing watching someone else play it and you fucking killed it man!
You are one hell of a drummer! Mucho respect!! Love the title sequence too!
Very impressive! I usually don't comment on UA-cam videos, but wow... Best version of this song by a drummer not named Peart or Portnoy that I've ever seen.
Bravo!
...very nice. Big Rush fan and have seen them perform this song many times. Impressive and fun!
Great job man! One of favorite songs to play and listen to!! Great work out also!! Once again, well done!
Great work Ray... Touch and feel! The PROFESSOR would be very proud!!! I would love to see Nick Mason try to play this!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
playing drums to this particular song for me is the most satisfying song ever!
One of my all time favorites, thanks for putting this on 'tube Ray!
Very well executed sir. Great tribute and you should be proud of yourself. Job well done!
I've probably listened to that song thousands of times. You nailed it in my opinion. Excellent job!
LOVE that paiste 2002 and your signatures ^^ if only they weren't so expensive those would be my cymbals of choice
you have now idea what this song means to me.so many things in my life that is connected to it. nice performed
Loved that tribute. Masterfully done cover of a percussion masterpiece.
One of the top drummers i ve seen at youtube

That's Rush's beat instrumental and hardest to play with all the time changes, but U NAILED it. Man, U are GOOD!!! Keep ROCKIN'
Right on, your kickin ass on this. that is a hard piece hat's off! keep playin'!
Nice job,,,love it and enjoi it very much!!! keep up the good work.
This is one of my favorite songs ever. You have done it justice! Keep it up man!
Nice Job. A lot of "Rush" tribute drummers and bands fall somewhat short of the mark. There are a few exceptions and you are one of them. Color me impressed.
very nice, thanks for posting. Those crashes are amazing.
For anyone that is just beginning to learn drums: Start with Ringo Starr, not Neil Peart, Buddy Rich or Ray Harber. Walk before you run.
I keep coming back to this video and it never stops impressing me.
You deserve a medal sir. Glad to see people playing great music and playing it well.
I got a chubby watching this! I am awed by it! Keep up the great RUSH work.
Great video Ray... nice performance.
I love that Neil Peart signature ride pattern. Here and in many other songs. I've noticed I mimic it whenever I'm slapping "ride lines" on my knees. Too bad I don't have a drum set.
Crazy good cover too!
Fantastic cover man. Simply beautiful.
Excelente!!! Un fuerte abrazo desde Buenos Aires Argentina!!!
Very nicely done! I am not a drummer but someone who appreciates fantastic work! (I came here via astrotama...)
Best drum cover I've seen from this song good fills man
I cant stop watching this, great stuff!
Excellent job Ray. I swear man, between you and Martin... I feel I'll be spending some money on a new set of drums soon ha ha.
Anyone can play YYZ, BUT can you play "La Villa Strangiato" YES YOU CAN !!! great job Ray.
Steven Skripko Nice random Mike Portnoy quote ;P
Steven Skripko NICE quote! :D
Bravo, very well done. Amazing to watch, one of my favorites.
Damn dude, that cymbal work is TIGHT.
I love all of your covers.. *drools*
:3
You are living out a lot of peoples fantasies, great job!
I was a "wanna-be" drummer back in my day and all I can say is excellent job. Only in my dreams could I pull that song off as well as you. Thanks for the show!
perfection again Ray,,,,i bow to thee,,,,,,,,,
ffs i can't even keep up with this on air drums. thanks SO much for posting. top talent.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I teared up a bit at your brilliant recreation! My friend and I spent countless hours back in the 80s trying to figure out how the professor did those parts and finally decided that he was some sort of super
alien and gave up! You F**KING rock! By the way, thanks for proving that you're human with that slightly sloppy footwork around 5:20. Otherwise I would have had to label you as a super alien as well!
Neil, we already knew you could play the song spot on.
Brilliantly dissected. Not an easy song to play along to! I believe they even slow the BPM's live.
Nice work.
Such fervent energy and timing, Found you Ray on this Sunday morning, WOOWWWW.. Great Job!! ;-)
Thank you!
nice cover and loving the finish on the drums.
Nuff said.
you deserve way many more views for that performance. Rush is one of the all time best bands but not recognized by the mainstreamers.
LOL!! I'm STILL trying to learn how to play that song!!! Great job!!! Looing forward to seeing more!!!
id just like to say great cover.i can get right up to 6:43 then i just loose it. that little jazzy part always messes me up. the fills right at 7 are great! awesome job man!

SPEED, HANDS SPEED, GREAT JOB DUDE...
Great tribute, you made a wonderful job, congrats
7:16 patchi patchi he's our man, if he can't do it NO ONE CAN!!!
lol gotta love exit stage left. fantastic drumming bro!
I never understood that line or knew what Geddy said there. Fill me in, please.
Michael Fisk thanks for that, I always wondered what Geddy said. Now I guess I do. Don’t know what he means but now I have the “lyrics”.
Michael Fisk Believe it or not, I'm on the cover of Exit Stage Left! Front row baby! My absolute favorite band... ever since I heard 2112, I was hooked. Very nice job on a challenging tune!!
You did a great job, my friend. Thanks for sharing your work!
Really well done! That was very nice.
Thoroughly enjoyed that !!
Great job, Ray. There's a guy (channel) on UA-cam called Astrotama..I don't think he ever leaves his basement - he's VERY solid too. It's extremely hard to cover Peart...
Neil Peart: The greatest drummer ever
I can't play an instrument for nothin but Neil Peart probably the best drummer and there's a lot of good drummers around
Not even close. I could name 30 better.
@@ruckusmalone9419 Name 30... PLEASE.
@fallout new vegas lonesome road dlc ...got that right. No one can name 3 drummers better than the Professor...let alone 30! "Hold the Red Star proudly high in hand".
neil peart, phill collins, bill bruford, nick mason, john bonham, alan white. los mejores de todos los tiempos
Excellent job! I'v been mentally preparing this song for a long time it's time to try put it up on action finally :)
Great job! Pretty darn accurate. I love this tune but have never been able to pull it off so accurately. Keep up the good work.
I can see where @TRayner is coming from. It's noticeable on the first section on the song from 2:20. Had ta watch it again man! Dam near perfect. Love it!
Nailed it. You have mad skills to be able to pull this one off..
Your high hat timing improved when you started playing the back beat. Tough tune but fun to play, had my go round with it about 20 yrs ago. Good job. That's a tough pocket to relax in!

As an amature drummer...that was friggen amazing! Thanks Ray.
Great Job!!! A truly masterpiece of song!!
I practice to this song regularly. It's no easy task. Nice job! F*ck any ass clowns that are saying anything negative. Keep it up, man!
+Jeff Pom Thanks Jeff, yeah I don't worry about it...Thanks for the compliment, and yes it took a long time to get this song where I have it now...years really! Imma Goner makes me glad I AM a drummer. ; )
This is a FUN song to play! Has always been one of my fav Rush tunes.
@Rabbi Goldschlong Alex Lifeson is still..in his 60's, one of the best guitarists on the planet. Say what you will, but if you disagree... you're wrong.
Wow, quite spectacular
Awesome job on this epic Rush tune.
VERY NICE job on this one man!!
great cover and i like your snakes and arrows sticks, good job 5/5
WOW YOU ARE AWESOME MAN SPOT ON NEIL WOULD BE PROUD!
Great work on this!
right on time! Dig the shirt.
This is probably the coolest thing I've ever seen besides seeing Neil himself play it
Thumbs all up, congrats!
Pretty good you almost got the whole song! Love it
Nice job young man, you nailed every lick! It took me 2 years to perfectly master Tom Sawyer and at least a year to master La Villa Strangiato.
Nice job. I used to come close back in the day. I know every beat. Doing it is another proposition all together.
Damn that was tight. Love all your vids.
That was great, I’m asking myself what kind of idiot would give a thumbs down to such a solid performance. Yeah the drums were raw, without the studio mix, but what a solid demonstration of skill. you the man! i play guitar, and i know this song like the back of my hand!you got it! nice job sir!
I played Zildjian for 24 years, they're a great cymbal maker, and I have a lot of respect for them, but I just needed a change! Also, theres a certain special "spiritual" quality to Paistes.

Fantastic job
Awesome work, my friend
Amazing work ray. Nice production quality as well,...Camera angle is great. Fantastic symbol work and I love to run at 3:44 congratulations
