This is still one of my favorite episodes. Not only for being one of the funniest but also because there was a very human moment with O'Neill when he finally convinced that guy to break the loop. That I think showed us there that his pain never left, he just has learned to live with it.
I think the interactions between the characters has always been the strongest aspect of the series. That´s not to say that they get others really wrong, but that´s the thing I have always loved most about it, because there are few science fiction stories with such a strong focus on the characters and the stargate Shows constantly nail it.

Something that bugs me in science fiction (well, stargate and Star Trek I guess is it) is when a person is experiencing something fishy and strange but no one believes them and puts it down to something medical like stress. Like 'yeah we've had all kinds of spacial distortions, we regularly travel through worm holes which sometimes messes with time and reality. But go to the doctor and get some rest, I refuse to believe that time loop / voice in your head / any other strange occurrence you're experiencing is anything other than your imagination '.
Yes, but still, however, as you pointed out, there are Aliens who can create illusions. Like that wraith device, that made one guy believe, that they were Fighting anubis super soldiers, while col Sheppard believed he was on earth in another war. so it CAN be a timeloop, but it COULD also be mind Manipulation.

The thing is, even in real world science, wormholes and related effects are actually an understood concept and manipulating them is just an issue of technology. Time travel and by extension time manipulation like this is completely theoretical so even advanced technology would be a difficult concept to wrap ones head around.
Backdrop: the Ancients built this place as a giant time machine to prevent the fall of their civilisation as the Ori Plague spread across the Milky Way Galaxy. They couldn't get it to work, so they abandoned the attempt and gathered healthy individuals in the city-ship Atlantis for evacuation to the Pegasus Galaxy. This time machine (along with the Dakara Superweapon, which has a similar operating console design) represents the height of their technological achievement before the fall of their empire in the Milky Way.
That prop they're standing in front of at the end, that looks like the Ancient machine that wiped out the Replicators! Is it the same device, or just re-using the prop?
Re-using, most likely. It's easy enough to believe that Ancients technology has a consistent aesthetic: just look at the Stargate (I'm pretty sure every "alien world" set uses the exact same Stargate prop(?) with slightly different scenery and dressing around and on it)

What made the humor so great was the way it plays into the characters and just feels natural which makes it work so well.
