- Photos of this Street Legal Can Am X3 Bug Conversion have been posted all over the internet. When we saw it we just knew that we had to do a video on it. So we got a hold of Andy Rick who built this crazy machine and set it up. Andy is from Louisiana and drove all the way to Alabama for the shoot. He saw our RZR Bug Conversion video on here and got the idea to convert his Can Am X3 into a street legal baja bug with Air Conditioning. He found this new model bug for $400, got it titled and covered by insurance before cutting the body and bolting it onto a modified Can Am X3 chassis. He used a Hot Rod AC unit that runs off of the primary clutch. The best part is that he Daily drives this X3 Bug Conversion to work and has put over 3,000 miles on it. I would so buy a kit for one of these out here in Northern Arizona. Been thinking of building something of this sort, but that requires a lot of time, if one did make a kit of these I feel they would sell great. 💚😁👍✌🤘

the weight of the chopped up closed body, glass etc sure didn't seem to do anything bad suspension wise, if anything it's got a nicer soak rate.
maybe silly? I'd want to convert the front end to trailing swing arms so those front claws stay standing wider for launching+landing the beast.

No doubt. My rule of thumb for off roading heating systems is to try for 25 degrees warmer than the outside air temp. If you could get the AC to 15-20 degrees cooler,it would be awesome.
The day we did this shoot it was in the 90s. It was nice and cool in the cab
there's been ac in SxS for a while now! i worked at a polaris dealer and installed heaters and ac units quiet a few times! Amazing the options you can feet these days lol

BustedKnuckleVideo an RC car which is a truggy it’s a lower body monster truck/ stadiums truck which are typically 4x4 and have a lot of suspension travel and big tires.

That is wicked! Hats off to this gentlemen for the engineering. On the other hand makes me appreciate the fact atv/sxs are legal for road use in my town.

tytetee why would you hack up an X3 for a pos 'zuki motor when with stock internals, an ethanol tune and some wastegate adjustment the factory X3 engine makes in thr mid 200 hp range ? Sticking a busa motor in only gains you 300 cc plus about 165 lbs. not to mention you need to engineer a spool to accept the chain drive, you lose the 4wd and reverse. Not worth it.
Sounds simple enough, but you can tell just by listening to this dude he's pretty intelligent. I'm sure there was some cussing and throwing of tool here and their.

There are a bunch of older model ones on RZRs but this is the only X3 build I know of

That would be a cool vehicle for New Jersey but It wouldn't be legal here because it doesn't have a OBD2 connection for emissions. Now if the body was 1995 and older we don't have inspections because they use a OBD1. That is a awesome build and I would love to have it. I'm sure it would be great for City driving too.

Same thing in PA, no good because of bureaucracy. An old Mini Cooper would be awesome on that, as the new Mini's weren't imported until 2002.

That's sucks, you can drive anything here in Montana as long as you have lights horn and blinkers. I cruise my lifted ranger all over town.
Can you drive a RZR or X3 on the street?
BustedKnuckleVideo yes you can drive any vehicle that's not home made on the street as long as it has head lights tail lights and horn and blinkers. After you buy a unit you can go right to the DMV and get an off road sticker and if you want to drive on the street you sign a paper and get permanent plates. People drive rzrs and all kinds of side by sides all over town. My ranger is far from stock and I never get pulled over I even pick up the kid from school .

I guess that's the only way your able to get a beetle you look cool. If I did that I'd quit my day job and build and sell them, there's gotta be a whole lot of people out there that would buy one. He only lives about 30 minutes away from me too

Here in Texas that would not have passed expectation. The tires come out to far from the body. It would need finder flairs.

Sand rails are legal in texas, without fender flairs. And so are Baja bugs.

Depends on county....back in my home county i ran no fenders on my jeep jk with 35×13.5 no issue passing inspection
Got a friend with a widbody acura rsx. Told me it was a state law that open wheels are illegal.

colormesarge not really it’s still just a UTV, it needs a real Baja engine. Suspension is ok but it could be better as a full tube chassis like a true Baja

BustedKnuckleVideo I would to just because of a stupid law. You can make a sand rail legal but they just refuse about other things. A friend made a go cart street legal. He had to get a vin# issued ,blinkers,horn,and wipers. He got by for about 8 months then a dps officer pulled him over and pulled his tag. He fought it for a while, but never got the tag back.

I wouldn't drive a new bug, but I'd drive this!
The Boy Wen that could be made to pass a smog test very easily with a laptop. The problem would lie in the fact that there's no obd port for the tech to plug into. Have to go with an 02 or earlier on the registration so no smog testing would be necessary.
ROTAXD you can do special construction and get it registered . You can also use 10% old beetle support with vin and 90% new bug body parts. Cause smog exempt

My wife had a 2000 turbo beetle with the Autobahn package. It has a wider wheelbase then a regular beetle among other differences. It was pretty fast, and has excellent brakes. 4 wheel disc with giant discs and calipers. would go from 100 to zero very nicely. Damn water pump had a recall and it messed up the timing belt so we sold it.
the engines were junk in the newer ones
Yeah, almost immediately the power windows stopped working. the relay switches were always going out, headlights would blow out constantly. It had some issues. It had nice heavy doors, and good brakes though. I have witnessed a many of people getting slug bugged riding in that car. It was bright green. People would honk, and stop to tell us nice car. The police hated it. They would pull us over all the time for no reason.

It’s cool for sure. But when he states, “the blinkers work...”, exactly WHICH “blinkers” is he referring to?
The side-markers on the front fenders? The signals in the side-view mirrors? Even in backwoods Louisiana, that’s not “street legal”. If there were actual, legitimate FRONT signals on it, the cameraman did us a disservice by not showing them to us.
But yeah, it’s cool.
The blinkers are in the head lights. They are dot jeep lights. Look at the pictures on Instagram.

In Arizona you can make a SXS street legal and drive about anywhere , if you ever had a DOT inspection it would not pass because of frame vin numbers not matching the body
Yeah it is one of few states, other states without inspections we have to do things like this
This works only if you can get it done without a DMV inspection. Oregon DMV says that any engine sold as off-road can never be used on road unless it's below 50cc.

Put some king shocks and some nice fiberglass long and high fenders , have the back fenders stick out past the rear with a little curve down. Would look sick .
