I tried to include everything here in this one video to help you decide if the Hayward cleaner is right for you or if you already own a Pool Vac XL, Navigator Pro or Pool Vac Classic how to keep it running for years to come.
The main drawback with this cleaner is that it is a parts hog. Out of all the cleaners I deal with, this one requires the most parts to be changed year in and year out. The good news is that the parts are easy to change and once done the cleaner should be zipping around the pool.
You can also adjust the cleaners suction if you are the original purchaser with the dlow gauge that came in the box. But it is pretty easy to tell if it is moving too slow or too fast. After awhile as it is running in your pool you can adjust it visually. If it seems like it is running on the bottom -sprinting more or less it is going way to fast and vice versa if it is going to slow
These are great for dusty or dirty climates like the desert or pretty much the entire state of Arizona ;). They clean well, usually don't get stuck in the pool and cover a large area in a short time. I have heard that the anti-vortex drains and some very sharp corners give this cleaner trouble. Those may be some drawbacks to consider.
I included a look at the side port Vac Lock which is a must have as a safety device. Sometimes you will be running your heater and using the automatic cleaner before a pool party starts. With a Hayward Vac Lock installed, if some kids jump in and the cleaner is going and the hoses pop out, the vac lock will snap shut preventing any entrapment. The side port suction can be very powerful. I have every single cleaner on my route installed with either a Hayward Vac Lock or another competing brand. If the spring on the Vac Lock breaks off you should immediately replace it.
I also show the most common problem with the cleaner, that of the A-frame wearing out. You can just replace the A-Frame but I find that it is better to also replace the Turbine since it also wears out . If you just replace the A-frame chances are the cleaner will still work slowly. Changing both assures a good result.
Here is the video on changing the A-Frame & Turbine: • Hayward Navigator (Poo...

After replacing every single part and watching many many videos I finally came across this with the gem of the speed/wall climbing setting. Never even seen that piece after multiple assembly and disassembly nor was it ever mentioned in any other video/forum. Thanks a lot!!!
I never knew about the different settings you can put your sweep on. I actually learned something useful from youtube.
Thank you! I’m useless at this kind of thing but your video has given me the basics and the confidence to give this a good shot! Thanks mate!!
Well thank you--great advice. That leaf canister has saved us a lot of grief after our Phoenix dust storms.
it's a 2 hole but I figured it out by closing off the main drain. Runs like a champ now. Thanks for your videos, I know I'll use them when it's time to replace parts.
I was getting there eventually 😀
My Hayward Vacuum is two years old. It gets stuck nightly on my ( one of two ) drains. ( grumbles ) This is my first pool and your videos have been my HOW TO from the get go so for that-- THANXOXO!!
9 yrs ago . . . I know. They sell main drain cover bumper guards that solve this problem.
Plastic pieces that snap on to the main drain covers. They have a raised round rubber center that the navigator bumps up against, keeping it from going over the center of the drain cover where they tend to latch on and stay there.
With a little finesse, you can get them into place by using the handle-end of the pole that the net or brush is usually attached to. I've accidently knocked mine loose a couple of times with the net and was able to put them back that way. Otherwise, someone has to dive down there. No thanks!
Not sure if you saw my response to your earlier post but the 4" female hose connector comes in the box -according to my supplier.
Thanks for your video! You solved my problem with my Navigator... I was at the end of my rope & was about go buy another unit... now I feel like I got a new sweeper!
Thank you for the video. You are right too many parts can go wrong. I have to repair mine regularly. I do not recommend it to anyone even to my enemies.
You can try the Hayward canister also if your pool doesn't have particle debris. I called my supplier and they checked the box - it is in there - the 4 inch female hose connector.
You can just lay the cleaner out long ways so the hoses don't coil. That is why they want you to pull each hose apart. But if you just lay it out along your pool deck when not in use (out of the Sun) that works well. That is what I do with my cleaner also.
Helped me a bunch, as a new pool owner tips like these can be invaluable!
Thanks for the positive comment!
Thank you ! Just bought a house with a pool that has this cleaner ... we are used to infloor cleaner system from our prior pool ! Thanks again Helped !
Great video. Your the instruction manual that should have come with my pool.
Great video and very informative. My Navigator needs some love so I will be taking care of it this weekend.
Hayward AXV079VP Medium Turbine Spindle Gear Replacement Kit for Select Hayward Pool Cleaner -this is the part I think you need.
The mesh bag included with the Pentair Canister is good enough. It is fine enough to trap sand & silt.
You can find it online or your local pool store should also stock the A-frame/Turbine kit.
Very helpful video!! thank you for putting this together!
Thank you so much! At 4:00 I never knew that adjustment was there. My little man doesn't get stuck anymore climbing walls.
Sounds like you have a suction leak or maybe a hose is clogged in the cleaner. When you unplug the cleaner does the pool start right up again? If so check the pump lid o-ring then look around the pump for any noticeable leaks. If it is a suction leak (air getting into the system) the pump won't be able to pull the water the extra 30 ft or so. It needs to be a completely closed system to work.
One issue that defeats this vac is a Hayward drain grill. When my pool was recently refinished the original slightly domed open design cover was replaced with one of the Hayward designs that prevents suction accidents with hair getting sucked into the drain or a body getting stuck on an active drain. This cover is a solid barrier to the navigator, it gets stuck on it and stays there. What is required is some sort of circular ramp, but Ive never found one.
This might work. Or trade up to a Polaris MAXX cleaner. www.amazon.com/Zodiac-5820-White-Unibridge-Replacement/dp/B002SG7NQI?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&smid=A3N0LFM77402&th=1
Hayward is my favorite pool cleaner.
and your video is very helpful,
Great video! Saved me 500 bucks learning how to open this baby up and replace a few of the moving parts. God bless the internet!
God Bless UA-cam.
Great video. We recently had a 60 year old crumbling concrete pool religned with fiberglass. The pods on our Hayward ware completelyworn through and destroyed. Our Hayward also says "for concrete pools" I was just going to replace the unit but am shocked at the cost. Will replacing the pods be fine for our new fiberglass ligned pool?
When I go with my son to see the Hang Gliders I see some of them wearing cameras on their noggins. It sounds like a good idea for some of my shots -I try to look subtle when I am working and filming.
sure. I already filmed one put haven't built it yet.
Great video straight to the point. Thank you.
👍
Great video instructions. Change and out new pods , A-frame and the turbine but seems I'm not getting the proper section underneath the vacuum. I do get a lots and full suction from the hose itself before I hook it up to the vacuum. Thx again
That isn't typical. Is it moving at all on the pool bottom? Thanks for the great feedback
Your videos have been so helpful! I got my pool from green to blue overnight following your advice for the first time in years:)!!!! Do you have any reviews on the Tiger Shark pool vac by Hayward? Or thoughts? Thanks so much!
Sounds like their is something stuck in the turbine. Take it out of the pool & turn it over. You will see a screw. Unscrew it until the bottom piece comes out. Check the turbine for a rock. Shake it and you might hear it. If it checks out OK let me know.
Great videos. you should consider a hands free videocam like the looxcie so you can use both hands while filming.
ok, great! i misunderstood that you meant the hayward one comes with the connector. thanks again!!
I am not a huge fan of robot cleaners. they work but are very expensive. I prefer a suction oe pressure side cleaner. I have a review of the Dolphin Diagnostic which looks similar.
Just got one of these so thank you for the instructions on how to use 😊
2020 and still SUPER helpful thank you !
Very Informative video!
I've replaced all the parts internally and I still have little or no movement. everything that had anything to do with operation and movement has been replaced...
Any thoughts?
It could possibly be the system then. Try a friends or neighbors cleaner in your pool and see if it works.
I just bought an Navigator from Pinch A Penny, however it is not moving. What do I do?
Not sure if you got the last message but my supplier says the 4" female hose comes in the box with the canister... ;)
thank you so much for all the info! i will take your advice and check on the hayward canidster also. one other thought...i see the company recommends storing the vac with the hoses straight. is it a pain to put back together every time you want to vacuum, or is this really necessary? thanks again! your videos have helped me get my pool in amazing shape very quickly.
Here's my thoughts and I am not sponsored by any pool brand.
I used to own one of these and switched to the Zodiac Barracuda G3 - best suction vacuum imo. Runs on super low RPMs and hardly has any mechanical moving parts. It takes a little longer to clean compared to the Navigator but it cleans just as good - even going on the steps.
The Navigator is great when it wants to work. My problem with it was debris can get stuck inside that spindle (or whatever its called), and it would just jam up and freeze. I also had to run my pump over 600 RPMs higher compared with the G3 - which was a pleasant surprise with being able to run the Barracuda using a lot less electricity. The Navigators work and they dont jam all the time, but it happened enough for me to switch systems and I couldnt be happier with the Barracuda G3 (Creepy Crawl style) Vac.
Thanks for the feedback. Even lighter is the Zodiac Ranger. The bouncing types are underrated. I used to use them exclusively back in the 90's.
@@SPL
I remember seeing these in the 90s as well and I always thought - how can that work? No wheels, no tracks, etc. Looking at creepy crawly style vacuums, they used to look janky to me. I couldnt have been more wrong in my assessment. Whoever designed this style of vacuum is a genius.
Thanks so much! There was a small rock and part of a wood chip inside.
Nice size. Easy to use and lightweight.
Hi! Your videos are very helpful. I am having some terrible with my pool vac. It is going up the walls and getting stuck up there. I will move it and then it will go back and get stuck again. Could you please help me?
Hi! Thanks for sharing. Very helpful. Mine was set on 3. Changed to 1 and he still has the power to reach out of the water but not enough power to untangle a gentle twist. Although there is definite improvement. 2 seemed too powerful. Any ideas? Seems to be moving too fast also. Thanks!
Try to lower the suction to in. Sounds like too much suction.
When we hook it up to the power lock, it blows the hose out. Is there a special part we need to use? What are we doing wrong.
Great videos Frank. Im a newbie pool owner so these are great. Dumb question: Do I have to clean the debris out of the Hayward? I looked at the unit but I couldn't figure out how to open it up and clean out the leaves n stuff!
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you!
Can u do video on how to clean out the sand/dirt at the bottom of an attached spa?
The navigator moves well but it keeps staying in mostly the deep end of the pool and eventually in 8' circles, only turns to the right. Need help tried everything.
I have a PoolVac xl that is still under warranty. I registered it right after I purchased it in July 2021. Yesterday it started just going in a circle to the left, not turning to the right. I disconnect my hose every time I finish cleaning with it snd store it flat, on a dedicated shelf inside my pool house. I took the PoolVac out last night, checked it for an obstruction. No obstruction snd no visible worn wings, feet, or flaps. After disconnecting the hose and storing it, I put it back in the pool to see if it was working ok…. I also checked skimmer pressure in the hose snd changed the back flap to position 1. The vacuum is still going to the left, in wider circles, but still circles. Any suggestions before I place a call to Hayward?
Needs an A-frame turbine kit which is a wear part and not under warranty.
Good info. Thank you so much from all of us. ❤
This is a fantastic video! Thanks so much! Do you have a separate place for questions? For example, my vacuum keeps unplugging from the wall several times after it's been plugged in during the day. What could that mean?
Air in the return lines. If you have it attached at the skimmer this works great holding it in: Pentair Kreepy Krauly Hose & Accessories Kreepy Krauly Locking Bar | K12076
Thanks I actually watched some other videos on here and was able to figure it out thanks
Ours is going 100 mph. How do you slow it down? Also it was fine for 2 months but now it gets stuck on the main drain cover???
I don't have the navigator hose and use a straight hose. The navigator moves well but it keeps staying in mostly the deep end of the pool and eventually in 8' circles. Are the sectional hose needed for it to work properly? Thanks
My Hayward moves well, gets stuck at every corner. I just changed out the bottom parts, feet and flaps. What else could it be? great videos ty.
Could be the A-Frame/Turbine:
Replacing Hayward Navigator
A-Frame/Turbine re-build video ua-cam.com/video/jD9hiFQBthA/v-deo.html
Hi, my navigator won't turn, I replaced the gear box with the red top part and did the blow test where you hold it to your mouth and blow, it works, I think the problem lies in the gears that connect to the cone/hose. Are you aware of a rebuild kit for this? Thanks for the video.
Great Site , 3o yrs ago Pool came with Arneson Pool Vac looks like Hayward. Has a Speed valve for hose . .I bought front and rear flap kit, Didnt notice front/ You helped with that. The only question is What is the best hose to get, how long in feet and there appears to be an adaptor hose for the first section . After all these years would sure loike to have it working Are after market hoses any good ? thanks 16 x 32 greacian 8ft hopper
I've seen some good hoses sets on Amazon.com . The lead hose can be a standard hose also - I've had some running without the first OEM hose and they seem fine.
if i do get sand/silt, should i stick with the pentair canister and order the finer mesh bag? i do tend to get particle debris that settles on the bottom.
Thanks so much! I am considering trying the pool cleaner by pool vergnuegen instead but have some questions. Does it ever get stuck on ladders? Also, how do you attach the filter bag/basket that goes in the vacuum line, and which one do you recommend (I think I saw in a video you recommend one by Pentair)?
You can also video the problem and post it on your channel. Let me know when it is uploaded and I can look at it to get a better idea. Film when you connect it, the filter pressure gauge and a general shot of your pool pump area. If you have time.
sorry...i have one more question...i found the video about the pentair leaf trap. does the pool cleaner come with the female hose connector i will need, or do i need to order one? thanks!!
Mine always get hung up in the beach entry. Is there a way to better fine tune this cleaner or is there a better cleaner out there for beach entries? Thanks! Your videos are amazing!!!
Not much you can do except shorten the hoses if possible. Is it connected to a pool side port or at the skimmer?
Thank you, so helpful
Hi, thanks for the info! Where to buy the pool skimmer insert you showed at the beginning of the video?
great video, thank you! Q: at 5:27 you mention slowing it down but how?
Open up the regulator valve in the skimmer or reduce it at the side port valve depending on how you have it connected
I noticed that there was not basket in the skimmer but you have a rubber tapered plug that connected to the hose going directly in the skimmer. Is that normal or do you have to have a skimmer basket. I would imagine this is a customer of your but I'm wondering if its functions better with or without basket.
Yes, in the past you needed to remove the skimmer basket. But I invented a product to solve this issue: ua-cam.com/video/huAt9BXLu9I/v-deo.html
I changed parts on mine but the hoses keep twisting and then it hardly moves. Do hoses need to be replaced or is it the gear box ?
It could be the swivel on top is bad. There is another gear set in the top.
Very helpful. Thanks for posting.
Cool bro you help me so much, have a nice day !!
Great Video, but I want to know what causes the cleaner hose to keep getting tangled up, and how do you fix that problem.
Take it out of the pool with the pool pump off. Remove the 1st hose and then hose off the swivel really well. Sometimes small particles get stuck in their causing it not to swivel well. Also I suggest rotating the hoses around - move the ones on the bottom to closer to the wall/skimmer connection.
Thanks a lot , I will give that a try.
how do you move the navigator in like a v8 motion not in one circular motion or is there a motion in such v8 motion
My pool vac gets stuck in corners and against walls. I’ve replaced almost all parts...any ideas?
What does it mean if it keeps floating and isn't staying on the floor? I've tested the suction using their guage, and it's between min and max as recommended.
Air is getting into the line. Check around the pool pump for water. Maybe something as simple as the pump lid -ring
Where did you get the skimmer cone connector? I have a Hayward Navigator and use a small length of 1/2" pvc to keep the plastic adapter from releasing when the timer goes off. I tried looking up on google but only saw one for a Kreepy Crawler model and it wasn't black
+Michael Jones This one will work fine for you. They are all universal.
www.amazon.com/Cleaner-Skimmer-Adaptor-Baracuda-W70263/dp/B007Q92FEC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453085789&sr=8-1&keywords=skimmer+adapter+cone
What is the name of the black part where the hose connects into the port at the bottom of the skimmer? I can't find it anywhere...
I think that is called a suction side cleaner cone
Hi there, I set the rear flap adjuster to position II, but as soon as the pool cleaner starts running it switches back to one!! Any ideas? Thanks
Maybe replace the rear flap.
Hi, I have a vac lock on the side wall and a salt generator. When the navigator is inside the pool everything reads normal in the swg but when i take the hose out and the vac lock door closes shut the swg flow light turns red and it stops producing chlorine. Any idea why this might happen? thank you in advance
+zal411 When you take the cleaner out go to the equipment and also turn the side port valve off. What is happening is the line is still open and it is trying to pull water from a closed line - reducing the flow - and shutting off the salt cell. Simply turning the side port valve will solve the issue.
would you mind sending me a link or part number for the female part i will need to be able to use the pentair canister with the pool cleaner? i think that's my last question:)!
My beloved Hayward has developed a habit of "braiding" the vacuum hose until it is so twisted that it cannot move. Any ideas on what the problem is and how I might fix it? Thanks!
Sounds like the swivel on top is not moving. Try turning it with your hands and you should be able to spin it. You will need this to fix it if the swivel does not turn with your hand: Hayward AXV079VP Medium Turbine Spindle Gear Replacement Kit
@@SPL :-) thanks!
My hayward scoots along fine, but it seems to only turn left. I just finished replacing all the bottom end, feet, wings, and the A frame. What would cause it to keep turning left in the same circle????
Could be something jammed in the swivel on top or may be one of the pods is not all the way tight. Remove the wing plug and see if that threaded nut is completely tight in the pods.
My Navigator VFLEX DOESNT have those wheels inside. Is it a but fifferent model ir did past owner mess something up? Model# is : HSC925CCHBR
hi i just want to know why the pool shuts off when ever i put the vacuum in??? can you help ?? :)
I have a brand new vac from hayword. Works then stops for long lengths of time. Right length of hose , plugs in a side port in the pool with the flap . Tried cleaning . Out of ideas. Again , brand new product. Please advise with any suggestions thanx
It might be the equipment. I wonder if you could try it at a neighbor or friends pool just to rule out an equipment issue.
I replaced shoes and flappers and vacuum still does not sweep i have not replace both long brackets?
If it is not moving well it could be the A-Frame/Turbine -they sell a kit.
Do you have any videos on how to program different times for the Hayward Prologic control panel
+Tim Williams not yet.
How long should it take navigator to turn off a corner? Im not sure if I need to rebuild gears or if its normally just slow to turn
About 30 seconds. If longer it may be wearing out.
mine seems to work fine until it hits the bottom of the pool then it wont move. But it runs if I hold under water. Basically the moment the feet are depressed it stops the paddle wheel from turning. cant figure it out
I would change the A-Frame turbine.
They keep changing the outside shell but every part has been the same for decades. Pretty funny.
Excellent
I have a Hayward Navigator that just goes around circles. I've replaced the gears, A-Frame, turbine, flaps, pads and several hoses sections and it continues to go around in circles. Any recommendations?
How old is the unit?
Very Helpful. Thanks. my cleaner gets stuck in places where the pool floor curves up the side and on the anti suction drain on the bottom of the pool. What can I do to alleviate this problem?____ Rocky
Are you able to turn the main drain off? That usually solves the issue.
Thanks. that works for not getting stuck on the drain but what about it getting stuck where the wall and floor come together in a slight curve?
My Navigator is not moving, where do I buy the A frame??
My Hayward will cruise at a pretty good speed, but then almost come to a stop... Then speed up. Then slow down??? Any thoughts?
+Chris Patton Maybe air in your pool lines. Do you see bubbles coming out of the return jets?
Hi, our Hayward quit climbing the sides. After no luck with replacing parts, we purchased a new Navi 50 and installed it today. We replaced the basket lid gasket and the jandy three way valve gaskets. Still have the same problem. Any ideas? Jack
So, is there air getting into the system?
@@SPL We don't see air leaking anywhere. Things we should check ?
I keep having problems with this cleaner it keeps falling to its side. What can I do?? Please help
Maybe one of the pods is worn out. Check thast
Hi, I have an older Navigator & after replacing the turbine gear set (lot's of "slop/wear"), the feet, and the wings it still gets stuck against the bottom step of the pool, just seems to "nose up" slightly and keep shoving itself straight. It'll spend minutes or more like that. Any thoughts? Bumper too rough/worn so it won't slide l/r? When it is at this spot the hose is about 2/3 of it's max distance. 20000 gal pool. I have increased the suction so much that it will climb the walls a few feet & then come off. Also moves around the rest of the pool fine. Where the step hits the pool bottom is less curvy then all the rest, like almost a sharp 90 degree. But it worked fine for years without getting stuck there. Thanks for any thoughts. :)
There is actually another gear set on the top. But I rarely replace those at that point the cleaner is just flat out old. 😜👌 Hayward AXV079VP Medium Turbine Spindle Gear Replacement Kit for Select Hayward Pool Cleaner
@@SPL Thanks SOOO much, I shortened the hose by 1 length (maybe 4.5 ft?) and it no longer gets stuck there. I think the Navigator needs some "resistance" from the hose and when the hose is too long and it gets into a "corner" then the hose just folds over itself and does not give the needed resistance for the navigator to make a turn and move out of the corner. you are the best! Froggy.
Hello! I just purchased the pool vac XL and the first day it seemed as it was working perfectly... But after a week, I noticed the suction very low. I checked for any debris in the turbine, but all was clean. I then put my hand under the vac and did noticed suction to be somewhat low. How do I increase suction?
Hmm. How is the filter pressure and did you check the pump basket also? Have to ask. If that is fine then:
Next to something in the turbine there could be debris in the hoses. Start at the last hose and unhook it, check for suction and if it is really good go one to the next hose until you get to the cleaner head. Sometimes stuff gets lodged in the hoses.
If still nothing let me know.
It's at 10
Frank Barz What about the pump basket?
Sorry, I hadn't finished reading your response before I replied. But yes, my filter pressure is at 10 and I haven't checked the holes... This is a good idea. Thanks for the help my friend!
Also, what area do you service?... I would like to change the water of my fiberglass pool and might want to hire your services... Thanks for all the help!
Frank Barz I've got a network of pool guys from Riverside, LA, Orange County to San Diego that I can refer your way. Depending if you are in those areas. I also know of a local company that will filter your water without a drain and make it like new.
I have been trying to find that adjustable skimmer insert and threaded piece. Any idea where?
+Erica Pallaron Amazon.com or ebay should have them.
What would be a good replacement for this cleaner in a fiberglass pool? Zodiac Ranger? G3?
Ranger
