I took my Mini1 to the Madeira island in 2021. Also, I took my Mini3 Pro to the Dominican Republic (2022) and Cape Verde islands (2023). I put my Mini3 batteries on a lipo fire safe bag on my hand luggage. All travels without any problem.
Unfortunately I can't take my drone in my next travel to Cuba as drones aren't allowed.

Hi Henrik, I love your content but in this one I’ll have to interject.
For the last 5 years I’ve been the Ground Operations Executive for a well known UK based airline and prior to that I’ve been on similar roles for airlines in Spain (EU), making a total of over 15 years dealing with this topic.
There are 3 pieces of legislation to consider when it comes to dangerous goods on airplanes, in this specific case lithium ION batteries:
1 - IATA (INTERNATIONAL AIR TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION)
2 - EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency)
3 - Airline of choice regulations
In that same order one rules the other one.
According to IATA dangerous goods regulation, simplified for passengers on the table 2.3.A, section “Batteries, spare/loose” which applies to drones, controllers, etc., batteries can ONLY be transported on the carry on luggage, the table should be available at the check in desk and you can see it following the official link www.iata.org/contentassets/6fea26dd84d24b26a7a1fd5788561d6e/dgr-64-en-2.3.a.pdf
EASA says: “You should carry your portable electronic devices (PEDs, such as cameras, laptops and phones) in your hand baggage (carry-on), and not in your checked baggage”, please see the second paragraph on section lithium batteries following this link: www.easa.europa.eu/en/domains/passengers/dangerous-goods#lithium-batteries
The airline can also set rules but in any case they can ONLY restrict further, airlines can NOT over rule the previous 2.
All this information should be available in any airline website.
It is no secret that it could be a confusing topic but in short and simple words, put battery powered devices and spare batteries in your carry on luggage and not in the check in that goes in the hold, avoid an uncomfortable situation getting pulled to a side at the boarding gate or the airplane for questioning, asking you to remove the batteries from the check in luggage and potentially getting refused to travel. Get your batteries, controller, etc., with you at all time and make sure they’re not damaged 😉

Good video👍🏻, my last visit on Mallorca was not a problem. As you told the drone batteries must be into luggage. But at departure the security Palma Airport wanted to see my photo camera lenses and the camera body separated in the box for security check. I didn‘t know that, a little alarm occurred, I don‘t know the background, but much effort and time to unpack all my parts😵‍💫

I've brought my Mavic 3 on two trips to Spain in the last 20 months. I have separate fire proof li-po bags for each 77Wh battery. Never had any issues at either the Irish or Spanish airports. I'm sure a single li-po bag would be fine as well.

The Irish national airline Aer Lingus will only allow a maximum of 3 batteries (regardless of Wh rating). Each airline will have their own rules.

    Question...
What about when your battery/ batteries go through the airport scanner?
Because I would normally get 21 mins of flight time.
Two days after I landed, I flew and got only 5 mins on both batteries.
Then about 7 months later, the batteries were swollen and couldn't be used again...

How do you carry your batteries and your drone on those flights?

  • @GeoRick
    @GeoRick Рік тому

Thanks, clearly explained. I carry a few batteries for my drone and GoPro. I regularly get stopped for a few minutes while they check inside to see the batteries then I am allowed to go on my way. It's not a problem as it only takes a few minutes. Have the batteries in a hard shell GoPro case where they can be easily kept separated. I leave it in a place in my suitcase where they can access it easily. I put a small piece of electrical tape over each terminal, not because I really need to but just to show I am safety conscious.

You are a little late. Just got back home to Denmark today from Crete with my whoop. 😁 But had no issues in both terminals. Had all my batteries in my carry on and the drone in the cargo with all my clothing. Was only meet with excitement in Billund and Chania. :)

I know that in the past some Airlines had that all litsium batteries should be below 80% charge. Don't know if it's still there because I don't fly much these days.

I always put drone in check in luggage and batteries in carry-on, and i always say to the security that i have 3 drone batteries in my backpack, never had any problems, neither in Europe, usa or Asia... Only time i had an issue was in Billund Airport, Denmark , where i accidentally left the batteries in my checked in luggage, they called me down to security that handed me the batteries in a plastic bag and told me not to leave in the checked in bag, otherwise no problems

I travelled to Ireland and to Iceland by plane. I realised on the security check they were very well aware what drones are. In my case the DJI Air 2 with three batteries. On the other side I saw, Wizzair is not transporting drones at all. Another point: Don’t bring your drone to Dubai. When you fly to Morocco you may need to give them a tip. It’s even necessary if you want back your buggy...
