  • What's a Luxury Watch? Very subjective topic, with a spectrum of views, some divisive. There are objective measures too though, so let's discuss.

Interesting discussion. In reality anything above a Casio FW91 could be described as 'luxury' could it not? Because it tells you the time more accurately than mechanical watches costing six figures, is probably more robust and has more features. If you drill down to absolute necessity then it's all you need, so anything more is a luxury you don't really need. But we humans are like magpies though, in that we like nice shiny objects, and that's even before you add in our human personal character traits (flaws?) and the social acceptance factors that marketing men play on (that make people buy Rolex, Apple, Moonswatch et al).

I have a Citizen Bullhead chronograph from 1974, I wear it most days and still keeps perfect time. I got it for my 14th birthday in may of 74.
That is a luxury watch to me because it’s reliable and more accurate than other brand new automatic watches I have.
    Now that shows my age.

I read a comment once that said luxury used to mean quality, but not it just means expensive. And like you said, “luxury” means something different to everyone. So at the end of the day you have to just get what you want and enjoy it regardless of what people say. As for me, I think anything over $1,000 is a luxury watch. 🤷🏻‍♂️Thanks for your views!

@@perfectwrist23 I saw some guy once comment that anything under $3,000 is in the “Affordable” category. I’m hoping he was joking. Because my brother makes a very good living and can easily afford and has multiple luxury watches including Rolex Watches, and he would never classify a $3,000 as affordable.

I agree with your thoughts & assessment. In my opinion, luxury watches are made with better materials & have really classy hand finishing on all parts, especially the movement. This is where with watches there is a relationship between luxury & high price, because it’s the level of the watchmakers skill & hours, that add to the cost.
The price cap an individual will set for a watch is very personal for a variety of reasons, & I admit my price ceiling will be considered very low.

I often thought about this and I haven't come to a conclusion. It gets murky real quick. Personally I tend to draw the line where I don't see a relation anymore between asking price and physical object.

My collection range start with Casio F91W, everything above is luxury. For me "Hyper" luxury start when prices is disconnected from specs, perceived quality, when timepiece is a more of a statement, ostentatious sign of success.

Luxury is something you don't really need and is probably a bit too expensive but when bought your happy with it. I've a 1016 Explorer which I bought new for £600, that was a bit pricy but not expensive in the way that the current Explorer is, that's my luxury watch. This probably influenced my idea of the ceiling watching the way "luxury" watches have increased in price way over inflation or added value. The heritage side is interesting, I've long had a hankering for an Omega with the co-axial movement ,the George Daniels connection, but couldn't find one that didn't have a horrible dial. Then they brought out the Aqua Terra shades with some excellent dials but with a massive price hike from when I first started looking, a plain dial should be cheaper not more expensive. Broke through my ceiling, I would feel like a mug if I bought one of them.

Great comment. You bought the 1016 at the right time! Thanks for this

Citizen can really be very expensive. My Eco Drive One was 3000 Euros. But it’s worth it. I think luxury is a thing that you don’t need and you buy although it is expensive for you. If you don’t have the money, a G-Shock for 50 bucks is pure luxury. 🕐⚙️🍸
