    A tip with coil springs, which are unwieldy, use a cloth tape to measure out required stock and then cut off with grinder before straightening etc, saves time - fuel and injury potential

    a little tip for straightening coil springs, get a piece of pipe that doesn't have too much wiggle room for the inner diameter, heat the spring, put it on the pipe, grab the end and pull.... i think i saw that from black bear forge's channel.... i don't quite remember... just remembered the method... Very nice razor! the spalting on the handle scales gorgeous

    The first time I used a straight razor I looked like I was in a fight with a jungle cat. After doing it for a while now I've learned that smaller blade lengths are so much easier to control and try getting comfortable using your off hand.

    Several times in the past when I've wanted to make something new, you've come out with a video on it right before I start. I've been off for a while due to an injury and subsequent surgery...during that time I've grown my first beard/mustache combo. As much fun as it was, it's got to to before I go back to work. I was planning on using a part of a F150 spring to make a straight razor to remove the beard with style. Of course right before I start, you do the exact same thing and set the bar really high. Great work.

    I use a straight razor daily. One tip is to use the hand that is not wielding the razor to gently pull you skin taught. This will help avoid any nicks or cuts. Also on the jaw line if you pull up on your cheek it will bring the skin under your jaw up on the flat of your jaw where it is easy to shave. Keep the razor at about 20 degree angle and just take your time.

    fantastic project, enviable craftsmanship. if i may make a suggestion, as a general rule of thumb when making blades, do not make the bolster extend all the way to the heel of the blade, this greatly impedes maintenance (i.e. sharpening) and, depending on the application of the blade (e.g. kitchen knives), actually makes the blade useless after only a few sharpenings as the length of the blade no longer makes even contact with any given surface. the best blades have a clean edge from tip to heel

    • @Aleeknives
      @Aleeknives  3 роки тому

      Totally agreed! This was an oops, I actually thinned the bottom of the ricasso and sharpened right through it so the entire blade was sharp from tip to heel

    • @Aleeknives
      @Aleeknives  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Mark thanks for asking! The wood was stabilized spalted pecan wood. I used tung oil on this project and the spacing was super easy. On the static side I used some liner material that was just wider than the blade and at the hinge side I added 2 thin homemade brass washers.

    Out F’ing standing. Yeah the first time I wet shaved. I was sweating bullets. Now a straight razor is all use. I watched a ton of videos on UA-cam. Check out Dr. Matt videos. Awesome insight on the honing process etc. Plus he has the passion that you have. I just put together a razor. I purchased a Damascus blade on eBay , pretty but the steel is crap. Not hard at all. I made a segmented wood scales that turned out fantastic though. So I’m going to take the blade of one of my good razors and put it on my scales.

    • @spudcast
      @spudcast 3 роки тому +2

      Well the reason for the hollow grind is so that you can sharpen it easily. Razors with the correct geometry has a spine width to grind height ratio of 3.5- 4x, so that the spine and edge is laid flat on a stone and the correct angle, between 7 and 9 degrees per side is kept constant as the razor wears. True wedges (i.e. Flat ground) are ground to the same geometry, and sharpened flat on the stone. Using these ratios for grinding and sharpening gets the right width and acuteness of the edge so won't pull as much.

      I will be doing one this year! I like to gather enough wood to use an entire gallon of cactus juice rapidly. It goes bad and it is fairly expensive. Doing maple knife blanks you can get around 45. Hard woods absorb less than soft woods and you want to do light woods first because the wood tints the cactus juice. So "yes" I will definitely do a video! Thanks man! cheers

      I meant to show in the video! Those are the bushings between the blade and the wood at the pivot point

    How and where do I buy one from you? That is sweet. Work make me shave my beard. Now it’s time for a straight razor

      I looked at it a little while back but couldn’t find a straight razor. What’s funny is your the reason I got into leather work. Haha. Watching all your knife videos, then saw you make a couple sheaths, I figured my wife would be a little less pissed off if I had leather shavings in the house then metal shavings. But soon I’ll be able to try out some knives too.

    Pretty cool bro.. too bad this wasn't a challenge video to some other bearded blade makers out there.

    Good blade and build but! If I may offer a little advice; sharpen that thing like an actual straight blade, watching you shave with it made me so nervous you were gunna die haha .. yes it shaved BUT you will have suuuuuch a better experience with it properly sharpened .. just my opinion .. good job though on the not dieing part hahaha

    Your work is amazing BUT...having a bevel line in the ricasso/bolster is not ideal for shaving. The heal area does a lot of the work and needs a rounded edge. Just a FYI nothing more...

    • @Aleeknives
      @Aleeknives  3 роки тому +1

      Interesting! The ricasso does grind to zero and is also sharpened on this one. I learned that lesson also here😁
