A tip with coil springs, which are unwieldy, use a cloth tape to measure out required stock and then cut off with grinder before straightening etc, saves time - fuel and injury potential

a little tip for straightening coil springs, get a piece of pipe that doesn't have too much wiggle room for the inner diameter, heat the spring, put it on the pipe, grab the end and pull.... i think i saw that from black bear forge's channel.... i don't quite remember... just remembered the method... Very nice razor! the spalting on the handle scales gorgeous
Great job on that razor Airin you killed it!! without killing yourself!!! i m thinking of making 1 and giving it to a friend who has her own salon she does alot of shaving and uses str8 razors the disposable types nice job!!! Mark
Awesome craftsmanship! The first time I used a straight razor I looked like I was in a fight with a jungle cat. After doing it for a while now I've learned that smaller blade lengths are so much easier to control and try getting comfortable using your off hand. Gorgeous blade!
Several times in the past when I've wanted to make something new, you've come out with a video on it right before I start. I've been off for a while due to an injury and subsequent surgery...during that time I've grown my first beard/mustache combo. As much fun as it was, it's got to to before I go back to work. I was planning on using a part of a F150 spring to make a straight razor to remove the beard with style. Of course right before I start, you do the exact same thing and set the bar really high. Great work.
@@Aleeknives i shaved mine when my kids, now college kids, were small. When i came out of the bathroom one said pointing towards the bathroom, GO PUT IT BACK
I make washers by drilling my holes then using a punch with the outside diameter I want. A quick buff of the edge and they're perfect. A nice set of punches is worth the price.
@@Aleeknives Nice... will be keeping an eye out for that one. Especially interested in the heat treating process; especially if it's too long to fit in the oven. 🤣😂thank you! Really I was just demonstrating the sharpness of the blade with a full flat grind! Thanks for watching and leaving good constructive comments!
I use a straight razor daily. One tip is to use the hand that is not wielding the razor to gently pull you skin taught. This will help avoid any nicks or cuts. Also on the jaw line if you pull up on your cheek it will bring the skin under your jaw up on the flat of your jaw where it is easy to shave. Keep the razor at about 20 degree angle and just take your time.
fantastic project, enviable craftsmanship. if i may make a suggestion, as a general rule of thumb when making blades, do not make the bolster extend all the way to the heel of the blade, this greatly impedes maintenance (i.e. sharpening) and, depending on the application of the blade (e.g. kitchen knives), actually makes the blade useless after only a few sharpenings as the length of the blade no longer makes even contact with any given surface. the best blades have a clean edge from tip to heel
Totally agreed! This was an oops, I actually thinned the bottom of the ricasso and sharpened right through it so the entire blade was sharp from tip to heel
Curious as to the wood type and finish. Did you use Tung or teak oil? What angle did you sharpen it to? And lastly, how did you set the spacing between the scales? Thanks
Hey Mark thanks for asking! The wood was stabilized spalted pecan wood. I used tung oil on this project and the spacing was super easy. On the static side I used some liner material that was just wider than the blade and at the hinge side I added 2 thin homemade brass washers.
He did a great job on that straight razor. If you haven't tried this, find a blade and give it a a whirl. I suggested Aaron that he put out a shave my straight razor challenge I'm not sure he's interested. Hahaha

Beautiful razor man. And nice shaving skills. Never used a straight razor myself. Is that Marblewood you used for the scales? If so I really like using that wood because you never know the type of grain pattern you are gonna get until you cut into it. Wonderful build.
You say "really nice", I say really beautiful! Your wood looked spalted or maybe epoxy filled. Which? Is there any blade that you have not made? Love your vid's, tips, tricks and explanations. Cheers!
I had never made this one😁 actually there are a lot of Vladislav on my to do list! This was stabilized spalted pecan. I bought some thin pieces years ago and this is the first time I had a project where I could use them!
Well the reason for the hollow grind is so that you can sharpen it easily. Razors with the correct geometry has a spine width to grind height ratio of 3.5- 4x, so that the spine and edge is laid flat on a stone and the correct angle, between 7 and 9 degrees per side is kept constant as the razor wears. True wedges (i.e. Flat ground) are ground to the same geometry, and sharpened flat on the stone. Using these ratios for grinding and sharpening gets the right width and acuteness of the edge so won't pull as much.
I'm glad that I found you. It's inspiring to see what can be done with just the basic tools. Your stuff reminds me of my Dad. Have you ever done a stacked leather handle? I'd love to see you do one!
I will be doing one this year! I like to gather enough wood to use an entire gallon of cactus juice rapidly. It goes bad and it is fairly expensive. Doing maple knife blanks you can get around 45.
