I remember driving around SF for the 1st time about 10 yrs ago. My ex wife (wife at the time) got so scared at one point she started crying and I had to drive . You know its a steep road when the sidwalk is A STAIRWAY!!! SF is cool though. I'm from LV. Kinda flat. Not too many hills in the valley
I was in san fran last week driving through and stopped at the top of a hill similar to this, but when I tried to go because of recent rain I couldnt go forward at all and slid back/sideways while my tires were burning out. luckly I could stop and drive down the 1 way street in the wrong direction. got honked at but fuck them lol
@@c0mpu73rguy Try that and see how you feel. If you drive manual transmission you need to be certain you know how to do a proper hill start, the American way of doing it with the pedals alone will burn out the clutch on many cars. I lived there for 20 years and mostly drove a manual VW Passat, and sometimes a manual F250 extended cab long bed. That was easier on the steep streets than the Passat.
@@cageordie I learned in drive school that when the incline is too steep (like in this town), the parking break must be used on a manual and NEVER the pedals alone. It's been a long time since I have done this manœuvre though.
Your brakes need to be in top shape especially going up those hills and then stopping at an intersection towards the top. If there are cars in front of you it’s stop and go at a very steep grade. Some have had to put their emergency brakes on while stopped. Crazy.
How do you even manage to drive here perfectly without the slightest drag? Would driving an automatic transmission here easier or would it be just the same?
Actually, it's close to, but not quite the steepest. As a teen decades ago, I use to launch airborne (not so smart). Got wise and stopped this crap real quick after a close call. But, that didn't stop us from next trying to emulate the chase scene in Steve McQueen's Bullitt'.
The street is one way - going down. There's no room for a truck to park lengthwise, as well as it being too dangerous. Multiple loads via a small truck parked with the rest of the cars (at a 90 degree angle to the slope), would be the only alternative.

My worst fear.
I would be terrified to drive in this town.
*city*
take a bicycle then :P
@@Blast-Forward Anything with wheels is out of the question with inclines like that. I’d rather walk.

Scary fucking hill!
Godda love the stop signs at the top of the steepest hills. A stick shift nightmare.
Jesus man how do you do it?

and a good clutch of driving manual.
that must stress your brakes so little at those speeds
If there is a cable car line near, use it!

I tried to visit all the locations one afternoon, some of them are pretty hard to find, and they are spread all over the peninsula.
How do moving home truck make up there alive and how they move furnitures around.. Crazy.
