The Anchorage Downtown Partnership reports that its “ambassadors,” who patrol downtown on foot, have recently seen an increase of aggression, and in some cases violence, from Anchorage’s homeless, especially young adults and teens. The nonprofit estimates there are at least 200 people who live on the streets in the downtown area. A portion of this group sleeps in alleys and doorways, and under heat exhaust vents.
Each morning the Partnership's security team rouses the regulars before the majority of business owners, employees and customers show up. The rest of day they help keep order on downtown streets and inside businesses, like coffee shops, where some of homeless are not welcome because they loiter, steal and harass the general public.
On Friday morning, Feb. 5, Alaska Dispatch News spent about three hours with the interim director of security for the Anchorage Downtown Partnership, Michael Knecht, to get a firsthand glimpse into how he helps manage Anchorage’s ongoing challenges with the downtown homeless.

To the people that don't live in a downtown area claiming "they're just sleeping! Leave them alone!". They're sleeping NOW, but they're about to wake up and drink literally ALL DAY (often vomiting it back up and urinating at the same time) screaming, insulting and catcalling all of your customers, family and friends. The more you stay inside and do nothing, the more they believe that the streets are their home and they will become harder and harder to move. 17 years in a downtown setting. Just wait until your daughter comes home crying after a great day at school because she got whistled at by a bunch of drunks camped out infront of your house.

There's a lot of comments on here denigrating these homeless people for being drug addicts, not wanting to work, laziness, etc....although that's certainly behind some of the homeless problem, it's nowhere close to encompassing the reasons behind all of it. There's a great channel on UA-cam called "Invisible People" by a past homeless person who interviews homeless people in the US and Canada that's incredibly eye opening. You'll find the vast majority of homeless people were either aged out of Foster Care systems at 18 with no financial safety net due to never having any family to care for them or have fallen on hard times due to economic hardships or deaths in the family. I'm no bleeding heart liberal by a long shot, but at the end of the day these are human beings who are wanting of and deserving of compassion. They're our brothers and sisters.....give it a look if you would.

Here's a fact: People are fallible. As a prior addict of 6 years myself, I know how Heroin/Fentanyl is so strong these days that mere hours without using it your body starts to shut down without it. Although I'm gainfully employed and make a fantastic living, my bad decisions could've possibly led to me losing everything I had. Without the help of others, I would probably be dead or homeless myself. Compassion for our brothers and sisters can't be lost.....ever.

I agree with you 100%. Some may be robbers, druggies, swindlers, etc., but they started out in a bad home usually. They are still human beings and of course, need someone to talk to, lend them a hand, and give them a shoulder to cry on. There is no reason why the government cannot build tiny houses for all of them. Once they have a home for themselves, they might find hope in life and change their life around. They need a place to call home and to rest their head in warmth and comfort. Not like an animal sleeping on a sidewalk.

@@alexroman3682 It's not guaranteed. Do you just assume every homeless person isn't doing enough to try and get through their own problems? What would you know about it? Tell me. Do you think people honestly choose to live in an unsecured life barely surviving? If so, you need to be more educated about this bro. Homeless people say things they do sometimes because they're extremely ill in their psychological mind. Communication is imperative, people can't think straight. Do you know why that happens? Because of domestic violence at home, people kicked out of their house over sexual orientation, and cost of loving is way too high. The system we adapt to shouldn't be made more difficult for people to have a decent place to live and be secure. Speaking of impairments, I occasionally go by to by with a recovering alcoholic. He has amazing characteristics; Very high IQ, Educated in the field of mathematics, knows a ton about politics and networking, and he is very brilliant with computers. Why did he turn to alchol addiction? Because he literally lost his 2 children 8 years ago in a terrible car accident. He told me that this event caused so much distress in his life up to the point where he couldn't cry anymore, but rather cope with his pain by drinking. His wife passed away from stage 3 breast cancer by the way. I talk to him so often enough that I really do enjoy his company. He does get violent at times, but that's just because he went through so much pain in his life it really wears a person down. I don't ever assume what homeless people are because I don't know. All we can assume is that they're human and that they're struggling really badly.

I met a very pretty girl and we were conversing and a homeless man came up and started asking for food and we said sorry we don’t have change. He kept asking so I moved to the other side of the street with her. Started talking again. She was smiling/laughing then the homeless man followed again asking for money/food fake crying and all that. I said no. But he would not go. The girl got uncomfortable. Honestly I did want to punch that dude In the face. He was trying to take advantage of me talking to a girl and manipulate me into acting nice because he knew I was showing my nice side as I was talking to her.

Anger is one of the least talked about causes of homelessness. I never did hard drugs. I never had a mental illness I didn't have at least 85% control over. I had anger. It got me kicked out onto the street at one point, and I had to realize that I have the steering wheel of my life and I need to change the direction it's facing. So I did, and now I'm a landlord (oversimplification for the sake of brevity). I harnessed and trained that anger toward achieving positive goals, and now it's just another tool on the tool belt.
