    May their names live forever. I'm a descendant of Famine refugees who were stuffed into coffin ships and dropped off into Five Points in New York. Although life here was better than it was back home, it's not like things were great here, either - newspapers in Manhattan in the 1850s used to publish weekly lists of how many people had starved to death in the borough during the week.
    I love learning the stories of struggle and survival that come from the same places my ancestors did - when times are hard, I draw strength from remembering that I come from a long line of fighters who refused to lie down and die just because powerful people wanted them to. James Connolly was a lion of a man, and the stories of his life put steel in my spine when I read them! And Tom Clarke was literally unbreakable - I hope I can have half as much courage as he did.
    Thank you for sharing these stories! They make the world a richer and more beautiful place.

    Hi Davy, did you read The Guns Of Easter at school ? I also will add that before the Rising Pearse was considered a sick minded individual for teaching his pupils about how the must do their duty for Ireland and of course at this time most people didn’t want to break free from Britain.

    Little off topic but i noticed you havent talked about The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem yet in irish music. I think they would make for an interesting video and id say they had better harmony then The Dubliners and i love the dubliners haha. Give them a listen for anyone looking for something new. The jolly tinker, rileys daughter, and the cobbler are some great songs.

    • @BradBrassman

      I had an L.P. of theirs and it was those bloody awful (professional Irish) sweaters they wore that put me off. The Dubliners are far and away better than all the competition, Luke Kelly's voice was superb, as was Ronnie Drew's. I also found an old 1950's early 60's L.P. at a car boot sale in the late 70's of Irish Rebel Songs (Diarmuid O'Neill et al) which taught me more at that time (than anything else available) by just studying the lyrics!

    The period from 1913 to 1923 is very confusing to me and many outsiders, Americans, British, et all. Your videos are extremely valuable in disentangling the many strands of the history of Ireland and the coming of a republic. In my next trip there I feel I will be much more prepared to talk about this topic,

      If Davyholden's videos have giving you a taste to learn more about Irish history (as I am sure they have as they are very informative and very well done) my suggestion is that when you are next in Dublin you take a couple of hours and go on the 1916 Rebellion Walking tour (Easter Rising Tour) run by a man called Lorcan Collins who is a great Dublin wit as well as the author and editor of many great books on the subject.
      The best way to learn about Irish history is to be there where these events actually happened. I am sure Davyholdon would be able to suggest as equally interesting historical tours around Dublin and Ireland for you.
      It's far better and more inspiring to do these quality historical tours than many other more "commercial" attractions in Dublin that are not so informative or interesting.

    • @ATLmodK
      @ATLmodK Рік тому +1

      @@Lissadell1916 I went on that tour, and just loved Lorcan Collins, we had a lively discussion on politics, both American and Irish and my period of study, the Troubles, as well as learning so much about the 1916 rising. My only complaint was that it wasn’t long enough. I’m less confused but you are right, you have to be there.
      I’m now listening to Lorcan Collins podcast for great detail on the period.
      Fortunately I know quite a bit about the Troubles and now I’m understanding how the history of the rising and the Troubles fit together.

    • @Lissadell1916
      @Lissadell1916 Рік тому

      @@ATLmodK Oh, well done you, I am so glad you enjoyed the tour and had a good time! Mr Collins is really an engaging and interesting character, a very funny guy and I love the man dearly. I've been on the tour about 12 times now and you can always be sure of having great craic with the man. A "must do" tour for anyone going to Dublin for a few days I think.

    • @ATLmodK
      @ATLmodK Рік тому +1

      @@Lissadell1916 I totally agree, and I would love to do it again if he could put up with me another time. We had an excellent discussion about the Troubles and current Northern Irish politics and he paid a compliment to my knowledge by asking me if I was sure I didn’t work for the CIA? However, he didn’t quiz me on the Black and Tans war or the civil war where I am still baffled. And I will say that he gave me a lot of factual information about the participants that I did not know prior to the walk, as well as setting the background to make it come alive. Next time I also want to do the Killmainham Gaol tour. As my daughter says, “Irish history is filled with suffering and conflict, mom’s favorite topics.”

    Gewan Davy. I didnt know most of those lads name and mu great granda was in Jacobs under McDonagh. I really shouldve known those mens names.
    Here btw a bit of nerdly coolness. I met a relative of McDonaghs a few years ago. The family always thought that they were settled travellers but the recent dna thing says otherwise.
    They still have loads of family friends who are travellers n all. And the science aside its a little hidden thing that travellers played a role in the rising

    • @Irishmartin1971
      @Irishmartin1971 4 місяці тому

      They most certainly were not settled travelers at all.
      The family was originally small tenant farmers from Roscommon .
      MacDonaghs mother came from England.
      This isn’t intended to have a go at the history of the travelers .
      This is just a clarification, I’m from his hometown and am friends with family members.

    Roger Casement was a great man and fine human being and he was also the only man not to be executed under order 256. The tragic irony was that during his trial at Bow Street Magistrates Court, every single witnesses for the prosecution that gave evidance against him, was Irish, except one sailor from HMS Bluebell and he was only there giving evidence against the captain of the Aud, Karl Spindler.
