A great review here, but I'm just left wondering why the battery regen is so heavy in 'Sport' mode? 'Sport' mode' really is useless in this car with a ridiculous amount of engine braking in to corners, just makes the whole mode unusable, I would have thought 'Sport' mode would disable the regen function as it does the Start/Stop function, it is pointless and needs reprogramming in my opinion...

he got everything wrong about the hybrid system. the ev motor is only rated at 15bhp and the batteries dont charge via braking, they are charged via the 5kw alternator strapped to the side of the engine. the braking he is feeling is the alternator kicking in.
@@Otherdave008 had it for a couple of weeks now and done around 500 miles. Overall a lot quieter than the ST3, and is not quite as quick to get to 60. I'm surprised, indeed a little shocked that the engine can be turned off at up to 16 MPH. This used to be termed 'coasting ' and was illegal, for obvious reasons. Has that law been amended ?
Dieses Fahrzeug wird als normaler verbrenner gewertet, wenn das gemeint war. Keine Vorteile außer Schnelligkeit und vielleicht Verbrauch, trotz hybrid.
I Love that color. I call it the 'Almost White' Blue. I also Like the 'Almost White' Silver. Pastel Colors are terrific ... I wish Tesla would do those colors ...
Constructive criticism here: the electric part of the powertrain is called a motor, not an engine (2:58) - engines are by definition internal combustion units. Also, those jeans look absolutely ridiculous, mate. Other than that, solid review👍 Subbed.
I have to say I thought about Fiesta ST-Line with 125hp EB mHEV ever since i've driven the Puma with this engine and found it to be a fantastic engine. Better than standard 1.0 EB, due to electric engine's additional torque in lower part of the torque curve. I didn't observed mentioned problems in 'sport' mode in Puma (Titanium, not ST-L). Maybe the option of regen affected this behaviour? Personally I think it's a perfect engine for such a small car - you can work it hard on public roads, response of throttle is sport mode is great, there's decent ooomph, sound is also the best 1.0l engine I heard. And it's the first start/stop that I found usefull and let's say - invisible. Only con are vibrations below 1,6~1,7k rpm. I'd love to drive it. I think Fiest ST-Line with mHEV EB have to be a riot, really!
@@MatteoPolpi i had a st line 140 got high 40s to 50 mpg swapped to a mk8 st about 2 months ago in summer got 30.9 mpg now its 29.8 keep in mind not alot of motorway driving and heavy right foot lol
This is NOT a hybrid. It’s a mild hybrid (MHEV). These are 2 different things. Hybrid: Like the Prius and other Toyota hybrids can move the car on solely electric power at low speeds and use the ICE for more power. Mild Hybrid: Basically a stop-start system with a stronger starter motor with a 48V battery that allows you to start the engine faster, and charge the battery while braking (but not as much as a regular hybrid). I honestly find mild hybrids a cheap marketing trick meant to artificially increase manufacturers’ “electrified” sales numbers since most people don’t know the difference between hybrids and mild hybrids.
@@neilbowness6074 I’m only calling it that because it’s the industry accepted terminology and I had to use it to explain the difference. From the description I’ve given, you can see that it’s just a better stop-start system. And even if I agreed with the terminology, I still think it’s an important distinction for a car review, to say what kind of hybrid it is. The reviewer in this video seemed to be surprised that it wouldn’t operate in EV mode at all, which is impossible in a mild hybrid.
@@DaveDVideoMaker yeah, that’s right, a manual gearbox is only possible with mild hybrids because it’s always using the engine to move. With a hybrid, manufacturers won’t offer a manual because a driver may not know how to manage gear changes in the transition between electric and hybrid mode. Toyota hybrids for example, don’t even have a normal transmission with individual gears; they use a planetary gear set, which is simpler than a conventional transmission and more reliable (but they just call it a CVT since that’s how the resulting drive feels).
These small 3 cylinder engines souped up with turbo power are obvious going on to fail its a fact you can't have your cake an eat it. Get rid as soon as the warranty is up, better still don't buy one in the first place!..
got the new facelift 125hp version of the car and what you describe with regen in sport mode is something i like tbh. but i have about 1000 km of seat time in a pure electric prototype light vehicle that had more electric power and was half the weight. and the aggressive regen realy grew on me. the fiesta feels like that very pocket rocket prototype at least what the regen is concerned and since brake pads cost money well might as well. comes with the side effect though that you have to give like 1or2 mm of throttle at a slight downhill section to not loose speed makes about 0.5l/100km not bad enough to hate it. just while it obviously is charge state dependent how much / how aggressive it regens i happen to get a somewhat unpredictable driving behaviour since nobody ever anywhere tells you the charge of your battery... sometimes almost no regen what so ever (or so it feels) sometimes like 20% brake pedal just by going off the throttle.... 3rd and 4th gear seem to regen quite well 6th feels almost not there
@@urugulu1656 take a closer look at the video - the presenter goes through the menu and switches the regen options. Btw. it's ofc for MHEV version. normal IC-only doesn't have it.
@@mx19idlewilder or does he? id instantly agree that he switches the start stop settings (ie speed where the engine kicks out) yet that certainly isnt the same
I think these mild hybrids are just a stopgap to make emissions look slightly better before companies go proper electric, and for that it's fine and fits the market I suppose. Not a fan of that colour though, just white or light greys in general.
I wouldn't put it past ford, once the Mach E comes out and everything and they get few years worth of testing they can then develop and increase the tech and add it to the focus then feista ect...
Great vid but I think you misused the sport mode.. it is supposed to be akin to one pedal driving (if you've ever driven a forklift truck, it's just like that).
It doesn’t slow down fast enough to be driven like that. The biggest issue is the time between lifting your foot from the throttle and the regen system kicking in. If it kicked in instantly, it would be easy to judge the slowdown. It’s the uncontrolled change in pace that makes it hard to judge.
Good review. I am not sure a real hybrid is much better. It becomes a lot heavier with lot of batteries. Also, the power still come from the engine. Even though it can drive with battery power, the energy still comes from the engine burning fuel. This system stores the energy from regen braking and then output the power when you accelerate saving engine power.
It's sad really as even mg rover managed to add the same electric boost power to a mgtf hpd concept in 2001 come on Ford let's have a decent electric motor on the rear axle aswell, the battery tech increased discharge capability over the past 20 years allows it.
I had still have as I’m selling it a 19 plate st line 125 and over 70000 miles got 41.9.Only had my 72 plate 125 hybrid for 2 weeks but currently 46.It’s cold now so 10-12% better but insurance group a lot higher so any advantage wiped out.
No I'll stick to my Fiesta Active which I've come to like on a day to day performance, city driving, local shopping and weekends out and about in the countryside.
I’ve got the 140bhp at the moment, but getting the 155bhp version in January. Really excited to try it, also going for the st-line X which I didn’t have before.
They are not advertising "we went green" because it doesn't really do anything. Barely affects the fuel consumption in a positive way and just adds a bunch of weight and cost. They just did it to pretend they also have tech.
I’ve got one as a courtesy car now, I don’t agree. The engine is pathetic, the gearbox isn’t great (feels loose and long throw) and the regen is far too strong.
Think there is about a £60 PM difference on PCP between the ST line X 155 (this car) and an ST-3..... food for thought..... 155 is more than adequate for most people tho :).... nice vid btw
I really can't be bothered to check, but if (as I suspect) this is more expensive than the normal ecoboost version, what's the point? Really, what's the point? It's more complex, it'll be more expensive to insure, it'll weigh more, have greater tyre wear and the electricity you're generating to feed those batteries comes from burning petrol. Is there a more expensive way of generating electricity? Is there?
This is the replacement for the outgoing petrol ecoboosts, so you won’t be able to buy a ‘normal’ one going forwards. It’s 30KG extra (which you won’t notice) and the batteries are charged from braking/slowing down - that’s energy that is completely wasted in a traditional car. Although it’s not a fully fledged hybrid, I think it’s great you get an extra 15hp for free. 👍🏼
15 bhp for free? Really? So it costs no more than the outgoing car? In which case I'm impressed. And 30kg is more than half a wife. Colin Chapman would hate it.
Funny how all those channels getting bigger on the fiesta end up selling it. I can say the novelty has worn off for me after 2 years ownership of a mk8 st.
Unbalanced 3 cylinder engine ? My 2018 is incredibly smooth. No balancer shafts, but there is a deliberately engineered imbalance in the flywheel to balance the engine.
Hit the nail on the head really. It’s a great car, for what it is... but it isn’t an ST. If you are looking for a sensible daily car - it’s pretty faultless.
Start stop systems are stupid in a lot of cases. I seriously don't believe that a 30 sec stop at a red light will make me use so much more fuel. Instead the start stop system will ruin the battery faster.
Kevin Bushell Hi, I haven’t driven the 140 red / black edition But my Nephew has a 125bhp zetec S and that is remapped to 155bhp and it feels quite Nippy for a 1.0. And I’m an ST focus Driver so ? Yeah. The 140 according to Superchips can Gain 36bhp and 56 ft/lbs Torque. For £334. That’s 174 bhp from a 1 litre engine The old Fiesta ST has a 1.6 ecoboost with 180bhp . 😉 So what do think ? Kevin Bushell No problem, I’m sure you’ll love it, certainly Take the Smug look off some German Whip drivers when your 1.0 Fezz is keeping up . Haha Enjoy Stay safe too cheers 👍
You can’t really call it a hybrid then ?? It’s just a new version of stop start to call it hybrid it must be able to run at least 50 miles on battery power so it can be used in towns and cities so my opinion is why bother just buy a eco boost but without the tree hugging rope around your neck and extra service costs that go with it !!
By definition, mild-hybrid vehicles use an extra electric motor to support the regular combustion engine. They do not have to be able to drive fully electric (like full-hybrid vehicles, e.g. many Toyota cars, do). In this case, if I get this right, the electric motor is driving the crankshaft of the combustion engine during the low rev area. It provides additional torque, therefore you need less fuel to accelerate from standstill. Basically this electric motor works as a compensation for the lack of turbocharger while accelerating in the low revs regime. At higher revs, the turbocharger does its job just like in a regular combustion engine. The electric 'motor' then works as a generator to load the 48V battery.
@@bernddasbrot2453 I don’t disagree however what’s the point having one it just means more electrical rubbish bolted to the engine and loads more maintenance costs to the owners nothing really green about it !! So no point buying one if it isn’t able to run on electrical power for at least 50 miles !! Or just go and buy a full EV or wait until Tesla release the new model 2 hatchback for £18,000 that’s going to wipe the floor with all other car manufacturers !!! Because what I’ve seen of it I’m ordering one for the wife perfect 👌

All hybrid fiestas are chain driven Ford changed to timing chains in early 2020 I would advice you stay clear of the wet belt model at all costs
I believe all timing chain Ecoboost engines still have wet belts for the oil pump.
They do but my friend works in the biggest Ford dealership on the south coast and he says he has had no problems with the belt or ever changed one
I borrowed one. It did 4 mpg less than my 2017 st line. Also felt sloppier. Do a battery one Ford!
I didn't think it felt sloppier but the mpg wasn't brilliant...
Have recently purchased this car. The hybrid batteries aren't within the engine bay, theyre under the drivers seat.
he got everything wrong about the hybrid system. the ev motor is only rated at 15bhp and the batteries dont charge via braking, they are charged via the 5kw alternator strapped to the side of the engine. the braking he is feeling is the alternator kicking in.
Literally just bought one of these. Originally had a MK8 140 stline, swapped to an ST3 last year and swapping over to the 125 hybrid now.
How is it? as much as I would go electric, I feel like there market isn't great atm still, I have a Focus ST3, myself. How do you compare?
@@Otherdave008 had it for a couple of weeks now and done around 500 miles.
Overall a lot quieter than the ST3, and is not quite as quick to get to 60. I'd say it feels very similar to my old 140bhp st line.
I have to check my speed often as it really doesn't make much sound when you're going around 60/70.
Getting 47 mpg which is nicer than the 35 I was getting in the ST3. Overall, not quite as fun of a car but economically good and still a quality motor.
I liked how the Fiesta drives but hate the 1.0 ecoboost engine and the one I had went in 4 times for warranty work
They’re terrible for reliability. The old 1.25,1.4 and 1.6 engines on the older fiestas were pretty faultless and could take some abuse mines on 120 thousand miles and no problems
@@bobsurrey6686 I got rid of it shortly after and took a financial hit to do so. Gone to VW now (Golf) - seems solid and the engine is just so much nicer. Never having a 3 cylinder engine again.
One hell of a JB CTR quality video, can't wait to see what your next car is. I really do like the colour of the car, would prefer it as a 3-door however, good to know what the hybrid is actually like!

Hi.
I've got one of these.
Does anyone know why the dashboard symbol of the foot and pedal is sometimes blue and sometimes white. Thanks.
Can you turn the engine start stop function off??,,,dont like the sound of that...
I think the engine sounds lovely and it’s refined & smooth too. Well mine is anyway
Sounds like a V6
Not sure if is artificial. But is pleasing, sporty and isn't intrusive when we simply wanna ride comfortably

Do they come in automatics
Or is that a silly question ?
My husband is 73. And needs a easy car to drive.
Yes! In fact most hybrids are automatic.
Thanks for the video eased my mind just ordered one.
Glad it was of use 😎 enjoy the new car!
I'll stick to my Fiesta Active 1 ltr though you have shown me how to deselect it from Sport mode which having driven it a year plus I never could find, so thanks for that - now I'll go and save me some fuel.
Where you got it wrong is that the 48V battery is underneath the driver's seat, for right hand drive cars
Great video as always JB 👍🏻

Would you run it on hi then ?
I'm surprised, indeed a little shocked that the engine can be turned off at up to 16 MPH. This used to be termed 'coasting ' and was illegal, for obvious reasons. Has that law been amended ?
Dieses Fahrzeug wird als normaler verbrenner gewertet, wenn das gemeint war.
Keine Vorteile außer Schnelligkeit und vielleicht Verbrauch, trotz hybrid.
Great little review
I Love that color. I call it the 'Almost White' Blue. I also Like the 'Almost White' Silver. Pastel Colors are terrific ... I wish Tesla would do those colors ...
Constructive criticism here: the electric part of the powertrain is called a motor, not an engine (2:58) - engines are by definition internal combustion units. Also, those jeans look absolutely ridiculous, mate. Other than that, solid review👍 Subbed.
Yep skinny jeans have aways made blokes look ridiculous for some reason people up north never got the memo though
What was the mpg? My ST does 44/45 in winter but as much as 49 in summer 👍
Can you translate it in KM/L please? Thinking about switching from ST Line 125Hp to a proper ST! Thanks!
45mpg is 5.22 l/100km

I've got the same car as shown I get around 40mpg, mixed driving
@@garyreid6801 11km/l right?
And plus, you can have the mild hybrid with a manual gearbox. On a normal hybrid, is an automatic gearbox the only option?
It’s not a hybrid it’s a mild hybrid.........so it’s still a hybrid just a different hybrid, so it’s a hybrid............
Exactly. The Ford Puma mostly has a manual transmission, but its automatic transmission doesn’t have the MHEV tech.
But you said it did run on electric power at under 15 mph. What about the boot and a spare wheel?
Mine have a spare wheel. The boot is the same size. Unlike the mild hybrid hyundai i20, this car battery is under the driver seat
Just the video I’ve been looking for! Looking for next car to replace my Giulietta. What hp version is this Fiesta St-Line?
This is the 155hp version
Only offered with a manual transmission. Only the non hybrid 125hp comes with an automatic transmission.
Does the 140 hp non hybrid fiesta have the different drive modes?
I didn't hear which version of the hybrid it is, 125 or 155 hp?
It’s the 155hp
Wonder when they will do a ST engine like this? Maybe more refined then this sport mode...
These small 3 cylinder engines souped up with turbo power are obvious going on to fail its a fact you can't have your cake an eat it. Get rid as soon as the warranty is up, better still don't buy one in the first place!..

I’ve had a Puma mild hybrid with the 155hp engine for about 4 months now and I still can’t get used to the hit and miss nature of the regen braking.
Glad it wasn’t just me. I found the regen braking fine in normal mode. It’s just sport mode that I found it very difficult to judge
Thank you for your review. I am thinking to buy a Ford Fiesta hybrid car
Good shout! The Fiesta platform is really brilliant.
Ive got a vignale and I'm upgrading to st line, is the new one a hybrid or are both hybrids?
i drove the ST-line 155hp and the ST oh my God what an Amazing car
got the new facelift 125hp version of the car and what you describe with regen in sport mode is something i like tbh. but i have about 1000 km of seat time in a pure electric prototype light vehicle that had more electric power and was half the weight. and the aggressive regen realy grew on me. the fiesta feels like that very pocket rocket prototype at least what the regen is concerned and since brake pads cost money well might as well. comes with the side effect though that you have to give like 1or2 mm of throttle at a slight downhill section to not loose speed makes about 0.5l/100km not bad enough to hate it. just while it obviously is charge state dependent how much / how aggressive it regens i happen to get a somewhat unpredictable driving behaviour since nobody ever anywhere tells you the charge of your battery... sometimes almost no regen what so ever (or so it feels) sometimes like 20% brake pedal just by going off the throttle.... 3rd and 4th gear seem to regen quite well 6th feels almost not there
could the regen option affect this behaviour? setting it to low/med/high could change it?
@@mx19idlewilder wouldnt know there is such option anywhere to be found

I’m looking at the new st line vignale but I refuse to keep it longer than 3 years then engines sent going to last for ever
I have a day to day car and have fun, it's the ST. LOL
Thanks for sharing. Which engine did you review?
It was the 155 👍🏼
@@JBCTR Thanks for confirming. That's the one I'm quite interested in testing! Heard good things about the output!
Awesome colour.
I love the mhev, the car is so fcking smooth
Good review
Ooooo look at me 🤣 I came here because I'm after one of these.
It's sad really as even mg rover managed to add the same electric boost power to a mgtf hpd concept in 2001 come on Ford let's have a decent electric motor on the rear axle aswell, the battery tech increased discharge capability over the past 20 years allows it.
MPG ??? Vs normal engine?

They are not advertising "we went green" because it doesn't really do anything. Barely affects the fuel consumption in a positive way and just adds a bunch of weight and cost. They just did it to pretend they also have tech.
Still waiting for the fiesta rs🙁
I’d like to see a Ford Kuga ST with AWD, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and a 0-100kmh time of less than 5 seconds.
It's called the Yaris GR.
0-100 takes 5.5 seconds. One of the fastest three cylinder engines on the market; the fastest comes from a Königsegg.
How comes you sold the ST for this?
This is a press car. It’s gone back now. 👍🏼
@@JBCTR oh when are we going to see the new car reveal 😁
@@kbahmed7072 Will try get something out before Christmas. It’s complicated 😂
Interesting way forward to go green
Try not to sound like you are reading from a script. Feels sometimes irksome but I admire the passion.

Funny how all those channels getting bigger on the fiesta end up selling it. I can say the novelty has worn off for me after 2 years ownership of a mk8 st.

This model only has a small defect, they made the driving position on the wrong side of the car. Rest is amazing.
Arguably, it’s on the ‘right’ side 😉
Inacurrate. The battery for the hybrid system is under the drivers seat.
Personally if I have to change I would go for all electric rather than neither one thing or the other hybrid, however I shall stay all petrol!
