If the victim in this case had went to a legitimate brokerage website online she would not have had this issue. You don't need to meet people in person, just don't invest via people that have accounts on social media sites like YT, instagram etc. Go create a proper brokerage account online yourself (similar to how you do with online banking) with these investment firms on their websites and control the investment yourself.

Anyone can fall for it. Remember how the two Shark Tank men were pushing crypto and they lost a lot as well. They definitely didn't foresee that. It is just very bad when people who have their little savings "invest" and follow others (who you would think know better) to do so and lose. Same story with Voyager digital currency platform, Seesaw Protocol platform, and that other one. Voyager kept telling customers that their money is protected up to $250,000 by the FDIC days before they filed for bankruptcy then they filed and millions or billions of people's funds were gone/stolen by Voyager and never to be returned. Before that, they also took people's money and loaned to other companies (without disclosing to customers) and the other company never paid it back.

Yes you can lose up to your initial investment. Usually these are the safest stocks though. In 2008 the s&p lost 50% of its value but it came back up over a number of years. You would probably have lost more in many other funds though. If you want a guaranteed return invest in your saving account funds or us treasuries but over time you won’t get a 10% return either.
