THANK YOU for starting with the rough mix! It makes so much sense to start from that. Us folks trying to learn something about mixing from youtube seldom get to hear it.
The way David explained his methods seeking expression and emotion kept my attention to the end. To me, very impressive indeed. Mastering engineers must truly be excited receiving fabulous mixes like this. Thanks, David 🙏👍🏻 AND THANKS SONICSCOOP !!
I just came across this one. I love so many of the projects David has worked on. And I love this song by Half Waif. I'd never heard of them or David, so it's nice to be introduced to an awesome producer and new music at the same time.
Great song ! Some vocal melodies remind me of the Foals for some reason. Also it feels like it would suit a Twin Peaks episode quite easily. Amazing mixer and masterclass anyway. I've just listened to the last Dirty Projectors album, his work on these songs is pretty insane.
So that synth pad has an EQ cutting out the lows and a filter cutting out the highs? What’s the difference between using a parametric EQ and a filter in this case? Why not just do all that with one EQ?
Hey SonicScoop, thank for doing these masterclasses. One thing I'd love is for professionals to stop saying “there are no rules”. Yes, there's several ways of getting a result. But there are “rules”. These rules are the result of years of experience. The rules are there to help you get a quick result. But surely, break them and try new ways to get new creative solutions. I give a decent reward to the mixing engineer that dares to say “there are rules.”
A fine mix and good song, but wish the fellow would cut about 50-70 % of talking, especially over the effects and processing he's explaining. Show plugin, explain settings a little, then let track play while A/B-ing every few seconds; move on: same hour-plus-long video, but twice as much playing of the tracks without voiceover. Thank you.
The rough mix "Before" version that he was given and plays early on in the presentation? Yes. It is. A lot of rough mixes are. The finished version though? Not so much! :D Beautiful finished mix.

Glad im not the only one who slaps echoboy everywhere
I was starting to get worried about that too haha

I've finally learned what mixing the emotion of the track means!! Thank you, Sir!!
finally a cool mixer
fuck thought he let out a wet fart at 16:28 lol
Someone let David know that if you CNTRL + Click the first insert/send plugin, you can turn them all on or off at once per channel.
Actually Alt + Cmd + Ctrl + Click do that job, but yes, a lot of clicks and time wasted
This was so awesome to be at! Many thanks to David, MixCon, and SonicScoop. Informative stuff

@@sxavarito I guess you could afford the airplane tickets!
Awesome song. Very informative. Thanks
Great mixer! Thank you for THAT inspiration, sir
Why is he being hush about the Klanghelm MJUC compressor he has on EVERY vocal?
Awsome lesson!
So that synth pad has an EQ cutting out the lows and a filter cutting out the highs? What’s the difference between using a parametric EQ and a filter in this case? Why not just do all that with one EQ?
Most of the eqs don't filter the highs
@@MJQEMUSIC that’s so not the right answer, EQ filters all frequencies. He probably used the filter instead of an Eq to add colour and texture
Maybe the low cut is just a utility and the high cut is a automated for affect
Thank you very much.
Beautiful
Really inspiring!
Agreed!
Wouldn't it be easier to chop the loop and extract to separate tracks? Very nice song and mix btw.
Is he Post Malone's younger brother?
Pre Malone?

Wow!
was anyone else trying to use pro tools hot keys when he made it full screen?
