    It would be a major project, but why not build a kiln with an interior chamber for pottery or charcoal?

    |______
    Something like that? You would only need clay for a cover plate over the inner chamber. The rest could be mud construction.

    I love this channel. This was basically the way to make charcoal for thousands of years. Build a big pile, cover it with dirt, light the top, and let air flow in from channels at the bottom.
    These stacks would get big. Yours is a respectable size, but charcoal operations in the middle ages had very, very large mounds.

    Watching a video of Primitive technology should be required before posting a video on UA-cam. This guy is a genius and supper humble. He never says a word. Never self promotes. The only sound track is the jungle. Time lapse to show just the essentials. He is always barefooted and barehanded makes all of his tools from scratch. Truly awe inspiring.

    I've just noticed that you're so serious when you're at task. I imagine this is fun for you in a very fulfilling way, but it's interesting that you don't communicate the fun you have, and as a result we are nudged towards feeling the simple satisfaction along with you in the accomplishment.
    With that, I bet you've got a fuckin' great sense of humour. Thanks for doing these. I appreciate the quality of thought and action you bring to what you do.

    Your video series are pure perfection! The fact, that you don't say a word is so rare and natural - after all you're alone there, the camera is only as a side observer of hard work and nature. The subtitles are more that enough to describe the process of projects that you're working on. Don't change the way it is, you're in the sweet spot :) I'm patiently waiting for another video! I saw a guy asking about the chemistry behind this so i guess more people would be interested:
    Basically all wood is made of resin+carbon, this burns the resin but there is not enough oxygen nor enough heat to burn the carbon which then remains

    • @carlangelo653
      @carlangelo653 7 років тому +26

      Also a reason why we use charcoal compared to just burning wood is because it retains heat better and has less emissions.
      Retains more heat = Gets Hotter
      Less emissions = less foreign substances in what you cook.

    • @insederec
      @insederec 7 років тому +4

      But, if you're cooking barbecue, less heat and foreign substances are both very desirable.

    • @hedgehog3180
      @hedgehog3180 7 років тому +1

      GinHindew110 This also dries the wood though of course you can also do that by just storing it properly but it will still always have a bit of water.

      Pyrolization - which is different than combustion.

    • @majikhat
      @majikhat 7 років тому +1

      And since the remaining carbon burns at a higher temperature, you are able to make a hotter fire with charcoal than with wood or even charcoal briquettes (there is a difference). It is much better for forging or making glass for instance.

    When you make a video that's 10+ minutes long but only put one ad...
    In comparison to some other UA-camrs who put around 4 ads throughout a video with a long ass outro just to hit that 10 minute mark.
    This is when you know this guy is actually genuine and he's not doing this for the UA-cam money.

    Tip: cover the wood at the edge of the mound with thick leaves, and then build the mud over them, that way the wood doesn't soak up the mud and moisture (wood at the outside of the pile usually seems to be the unusable charcoal, the good stuff is in the middle). Covering the wood pile with thick green leaves will block any moisture and serve to keep the charcoal from getting muddy.
