One of my favorite places to walk! I’ve often walked in the mausoleum as well, but never encountered the Sears or Wards tombs. Watching your video now I know where to find them and am headed there this afternoon! I believe when the mausoleum was built in ca. 1924 it was the largest in the USA.
This was a hike and a half Bryan. Even I felt uncomfortable walking around the great mausoleum! Those statues were amazing. Thanks for another awesome adventure. Deb of Oz
Back in the dark ages, I went to St Gregory School on Bryn Mawr. My friends and I used to walk over to Rose Hill Cemetery. There was a cave, if I recall correctly, and it was very cool, but only slightly creepy. It was so beautiful, and we loved it to look to see who could find the oldest headstone. At some point, sadly, the cemetery was closed to anyone without an appointment. Looks like it has changed since then..
I walked that mausoleum a couple of times with my then fiance. We were highly impressed by the Shedd Memorial Room. When I went over to the Sears room, I suddenly felt lightheaded and sick, like I was going to pass out. As soon as I moved away from it, I felt better. It was the oddest thing!
I was there TODAY. Dec. 1 2024. That happened to me as well! I thought I was going to pass out right there. I felt very lightheaded and nauseous. I KNEW it was something there. I had to hold on to my partners hand I told him there's something there and I limped out of there... Away from that spot I was just fine. Came here to see if anyone else had this feeling and boom found your comment!
The A J Franks mausoleum in this video at 7:00 holds Abraham J. Franks, an uncle of Bobby's. Coincidentally, Abraham had a son James J. Franks, a cousin of Bobby's, who died at age 13, just a year younger than Bobby at his death.
Back in the eighties, I worked at the Edgewater Hospital, adjacent to the cemetery ( Dr Mazel, who founded it is one of those buried there, one night CPD was chasing a felon in a stolen car, when he pulled right up to the cemeteries South wall, jumped up on the cars roof, and went over the wall to escape, the canine unit was called in and as a search of the grounds was made one of the dogs began growling at a patch of shrubbery, thinking that they had their man two officers jumped into the bushes, and wound up right on top of... A Skunk! The two hero's showed up at the hospital ER absolutely reeking begging for help! The Doctor in charge took one whiff and refused them admittance! So I sent them, to an adjacent door, that led to the physical therapy departments tub room, then went to the kitchen, and got all of the tomato juice and lemon dishwashing liquid they had on hand, and gave it to the cops to scrub down with bagged their uniforms and took them to the incinerator and got them some scrubs to wear home, and all was well. There was a second story that occurred at the hospital where the cemetery was involved. One night I was working in the public safety dispatch center, when our inspector arrived, ( he was an off duty police sergeant who highlighted as the head of our corporations division of professional responsibility) he checked all of our officers at their posts, checked my dispatch logs and our daily reports and activity logs, but couldn't find our watch commander, or campus exterior patrol officer, nor any sign of our patrol vehicle, he returned to our office and asked me to try and get them on the radio, I tried but was unable to do so, so he asked me where they might be hiding, as the hospital owned a couple of apartment buildings right outside of the cemetery that were used to house medical residents, and other staffers, and we were responsible for patrolling them I suggested that he check those buildings, as well as the entry to the cemetery it's self ( being behind the tracks as it is the whole entry area can't be seen by someone casually driving by on Ravenswood Ave) he did so and lo and behold by the cemetery entrance sat, our patrol vehicle, with our watch commander, and patrol officer, sitting in it, drinking beer, and snorting cocaine! Both were promptly arrested, and charged with open alcohol, dui, and drug possession/ use while armed, their badges, ids, and weapons were confiscated, and they were hauled in, shortly thereafter our inspector returned, and informed me that as the senior officer present, and assigned to the midnight watch, I was now the watch commander, I summoned one of our other patrol officers to take over dispatch, and called our director, informing him of my promotion, and the reasons for it, and left to reclaim our patrol car, when I got back I did a quick check to make sure that the posted officers knew that I was in charge, and wrote up the paper detailing the incident to our corporate executives. ( the Mausoleum spaces marked Kendall were the resting places of the founders of The Washington National Insurance Company of Evanston, where my mother worked for many years, retiring in 1991)
The community mausoleum has been decaying for decades. I have family buried there in Section P. My Great Grandfather and his immediate family have in-ground burial. Frank Schweinfurth, Sr. (see him on Wikipedia) helped found the Illinois Republican Party. He fought at Chickamauga and was captured and held as POW. He returned to Chicago and operated (with his brother) a very successful bread-baking business that had a contract with the City of Chicago. The State of Illinois Comptroller is the office responsible for ensuring that the cemetery follows the law concerning how the cemetery maintains the cemetery.
I walk through that cemetery just about everyday (I live in that neighborhood) so ya lots of noise from emergency vehicles going down Western ave. The geese are also fun to watch and check out.
Sears part when i was there i felt so lightheaded and nauseous. Only part that truly was creepy and definitely, definitely haunted. There are stories of the ghost of Sears in a top hat that has been sighted there. Ugh!!! 👻
schwinn was not JUST in the chicago area in the 60’s and 70’s it was nation wide , i grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and i had schwinn bicycles, i was born and raised in Utah, so obviously at some point schwinn bicycles went nationwide.
Why people leave large amounts of money. I do not know. Certain low-value coins mean different relationships to the deceased. Lulu was then-famous elecutionist who recited poems, stories, etcetera. Elocution still exists today as a course in school called "Speech".
Back when I went to Worsham mortuary school, I was in this cemetery many times. Just incredible.
Beautiful Mausoleum. Absolutely lovely video!

My friend and I got lost in that cemetery. It is big and just beautiful. Saw Bobby Franks crypt. Under his fathers name Jacob Franks.

I wonder if the camera that flickered was located near a haunted location? (Francis Pierce 13:30) That cemetery is known to be haunted. ❤
