  • After getting my Windows 98 PC up and running in my previous video, I decided to grab an old Sony Vaio I had lying around to see if it still worked. Sure enough, it works! With the classic Windows XP startup sound too!
    This is the last video I had pre-recorded before I started getting busy with other obligations. I have other videos planned, but they likely won't get uploaded for another 1-2 weeks.

    Wow that case looks interesting. Would love to see it turned into a sleeper. Also could you upload the factory wallpapers somewhere for download? I like collecting oem wallpapers as most don’t give them for download.

      It's definitely quite a unique look! (Then again, many old VAIO's looked interesting back then lol).
      Turning it into a sleeper build does sound like a cool idea but it probably won't happen. That case is not easy to build in haha.
      Totally understandable about the wallpaper thing! (That's one reason I love OEM installs, their unique wallpapers). I'll try and upload them to archive.org or Google Drive or something in 1-2 days. I'll send a link in this comment thread once they're uploaded!

    Sony used to make some really cool desktops and laptops under the Vaio name. I used to have one with e Pentium 4 HT, I don't remember the model, but it was a mid 200s XP machine. It is sad that they sort of started making average cheap junk laptops, and then eventually disappeared.

      That's really cool! Yeah, it's unfortunate that Sony had to eventually sell their VAIO PC business. Seeing older Sony-made VAIOs online is partially the reason why I uploaded this video because I always loved the design and functionality of them.

      @@ComputingCanuck yeah,my dad got his first PC during the time 1996-1999 or 1997-1999,I have no idea how was it,Im guessing it had Pentium ii bcz that was the latest CPU at the time,I heard back when we shifted houses on 2010 my dad threw it away bcz it was old and I guess wasn't working anymore,then I think he got his second pc on 2001,even I don't know it's specs too,maybe it's still lying somewhere in the depths of our store room since we shifted or thrown away idk,then his 3rd PC was that custom built one,so my dad got a IBM Thinkcentre M52 8113 from 2005 or 2006 most likely 2005 with Pentium D,ran vista on it,it was at his workplace,so when the custom built couldn't be used bcz of ram limitations,he bought the IBM Thinkcentre home and used it till 2021 with upto 8 GB ram which I have no idea how he managed to bypass it's 4 GB limit,but yeah one of its bridges died,oh and Pentium D has heating problems too,I guess back when he had the custom built I guess it used to heatup too bcz of how much power it consumes,still a great processor of it's time

      I don’t understand how did windows XP like at home when you turned it on it would just say welcome. But like at schools when you turned it on it would have like that pop-up bar that would say please wait and then you would have to enter your password and username to get in like how did they do that.

    • @ComputingCanuck
      @ComputingCanuck  Рік тому +2

      That depends on how Windows XP is configured! Much like the versions of Windows today, Windows XP was able to join a Workgroup network (used in homes and some small businesses) or a Domain network (used in large businesses or institutions like schools).
      By default, Windows XP joins a Workgroup network (called "WORKGROUP" by default) to allow it to share printers and files between computers on the same Workgroup. If your Windows XP PC is on a Workgroup, it will use the Welcome screen.
      Windows XP (much like Windows nowadays) can also join a Domain if they are a part of a larger organization (like a school). When an XP PC joins a domain, it will likely use the pop-up box/bar that says "Please Wait".
      There's generally two methods available for switching between the Welcome screen and the pop-up bar:
      1) Go to the Control Panel, then click on User Accounts, then click "Change how users log on or off", and then there will be a checkbox you can tick or untick for enabling the Welcome screen. (This is the easier method)
      2) Change the type of network the XP PC is connected to (Domain to Workgroup or vice versa) (Sometimes you may have to do both method 1 and 2 if method 1 doesn't work or isn't available)
      Hope this provides a good explanation!

    • @jacobisworld9516
      @jacobisworld9516 Рік тому +3

      So you mean like if they still ran XP like if I had one at my house, I could change it from the welcome screen that has the pop-up bar.

      Yup! I still have that VAIO PC to this day and it has been kept in surprisingly good condition from the previous owner who eventually gave it to me!

In fact, it wasn't until I got the PC from the previous owner that I realized it had a floppy drive and SD card reader hidden away behind a door lol (as well as the several other ports behind the bottom cover where the ATI logo is).
      Also I agree, it's sad that Sony stopped making VAIO PCs. I've seen so many different Sony-era VAIOs on the internet and so many of them had special features and/or just looked way cooler than your average PC from the time, which is why I'm really happy to have one, especially considering how expensive it is to buy one on the used market right now lol

      It was hard for me to power down the PC normally through the start menu since the camera was placed in an awkward spot where I couldn't comfortably reach around to grab the mouse and click on the start menu. To work around this, I adjusted the power settings on the PC before recording so that pressing the power button would power down the PC in the same way that a soft shut down via the start menu would (before changing settings, pressing the power button would've just put the computer to sleep/hibernate). This way I could still do a soft shut down by pressing the physical button instead of having to resort to holding the power button for 3-5 seconds and causing a hard/instant shut down.

      @@ComputingCanuck and yeah if you want you can add a SSD along with the HDD and install windows 7 seperately on it,you'll have 2 operating systems,I wonder who r the guys who replace HDDs but yeah sadly some ppl don't like em anymore yet I ain't never gonna stop using HDDs,a PC should have HDDs more than sata ssds but yeah this is for those older PCs which dont have the NVME slot in the motherboard,HDDs are built to last for long and they got a sound which just isn't nostalgic yet adds personality to PCs,specially older ones like this which are loud I prefer em,HDDs got rly quieter now sadly but yeah bcz some ppl get irritated by loud noises wether it's the fans or the HDDs or both,windows xp just needs upto 4 gb ram to work fast as heck,but yeah that is if its supported by pcs and Motherboards of custom builds,i saw other asus motherboards which have model names very close to my dads and support upto 4 gb ram,like my dads one was the asus P5VDC-MX from 2005 or 2006,theres 2 motherboards called asus P5VDC-X and Asus P5VD2-MX which support upto 4 gb ram which are i guess from 2006

    is not secure turn off a pc with the button

      The only reason why I turned it off with the button was just for the sake of the video (because the video was only focused on the start-up process, I didn't want to waste anyone's time with me going to the shut down icon within Windows). In my everyday life when using computers, I avoid using the button as much as possible :)
      What you're probably thinking of is when you hold the power button down for ~3-5 seconds to force a power off (which could cause you to lose unsaved work and could potentially damage files if they were being updated/used before the power off). What I did instead was tell Windows to perform a regular "safe" shut down whenever the power button is pressed for 1 second (the same kind of safe shut down that would happen if you clicked the power icon in Windows), hence why you saw the "Saving your settings" and "Windows is shutting down" screens even though I used the button. This way, it still saves the files and makes sure the computer powers down correctly.
