- If you’re about to book your first cruise, be sure to check out our tips for first-time cruisers. We came up with these packing tips on our own first cruise, aboard Princess Cruises Majestic Princess, when we took a cruise to Alaska.
We learned through experience in our prep and throughout the cruise, and we’ll give you all of the inside scoop on what to bring (and NOT BRING) on your Alaska cruise. This isn't a comprehensive pack list, but rather the things we discovered and/or were given a heads-up about for our trip that we wanted to pass along. Leave your own tips in the comments!

Great list! The one thing I would add for new cruisers is a good carry on, carry off bag if they plan on checking their luggage on and off the ship. Never want to pack meds, ID, etc. Great video, looking forward to the next one.
great one! we were actually really glad our travel agent warned us about that, too. For those who don't know: If you have checked bags on a cruise, they collect your luggage the night before you get to your final port to disembark. So you need a bag for things like your pajamas, toiletries, meds, etc. that you'll still need your last night and morning on board. Thanks for reminding us about this, Brett!
@@StephenandAndie Getting ready for our first ever cruise and we are going to Alaska. Please explain the "checked bags on a cruise"? We are going on NCL - is this like an airline where we would go for checked luggage, only somewhere at the port upon disembarkation?
@@lesleathompson4452 Congratulations, that’s amazing! Yes, that’s exactly it. If you have bags that you’re checking with the airline, your cabin steward will leave color-coded luggage tags in your room with instructions. You leave them outside of your cabin and they collect them the night before disembarkation. When everyone disembarks, the bags are all waiting in a holding area just off the ship, inside the terminal, organized/grouped together (usually) based on the color of the tag you were given.
We’ve just returned from our second cruise last week (this time, with Royal Caribbean), and the process was the same as on our first cruise, with Princess. It was really easy, and actually faster than most airports’ baggage claim processes. We hope this helps, and are happy to answer any other questions.
You should note that they do allow you to carry your own luggage on board and off, if you want to. But then you’re stuck lugging it around the ship when your room may not be ready (you may get on board before rooms are ready and then have to take suitcases to lunch and while you explore the ship.). If you check your bags at the terminal, they’ll be at your room when it’s ready. so much easier. and unlike airlines, there’s no charge to let them handle getting your luggage on and off the ship.
Come back and let us all know how your first cruise went. Alaska is so amazing - we’re so excited for you! 😃
@@StephenandAndie .
My biggest: binoculars &. Warmer clothing..😊❤. &. Enjoy salmon.....
This is such a great and useful video for an Alaska cruise! Whenever I finally make it on a cruise to Alaska, I'll keep these tips in mind.
hope it proves to be helpful!
The cruise luggage tags from Amazon were a fantastic idea!
Great tips, guys! I’m about to go pack for our Alaska cruise and was waiting to watch this till the last second so I didn’t forget anything!
Thanks, Paul! And we can’t wait to hear about your trip. Enjoy Alaska!!!
Great tips! Lots of things I probably wouldn't thought of.
we aim to inform! 😉
Great list of Dos and Don'ts for what to bring on your cruise!
Thank you!
Great tips! Don’t forget that while you can’t have a “surge protector” power strip, you CAN have a NON-SURGE PROTECTOR power strip, just in case you need those extra plug spots. I like the ones that have the USB and USB-C spots, as well. Also, if you already have an international travel adapter, that can be used on that extra plug in the cabin.
USB spots are so key!
People who use a CPAP machine would probably need a non-surge protected power bar, and many also have a variety of USB and USB-C slots.
All of these are fabulous ideas but I hadn't thought about the water bottles! Such a good point! Plus, I love the idea of less waste, especially plastic.
the Brita bottles we got with filters are wonderful. there’s a smaller size, too, but we drink tons of water so we went for the biggies.
I love packing tips!
Omg the walkie talkie is so good! Not knowing when or where you'll get service, having a backup like this is almost essential. Great list 😀
thank you! we were especially proud of that one. 😁
Most applicable tip to literally any trip you go on, cruise or not cruise: bring layers! YESSS!!!
When I am in Britain, I often experience four seasons in one day!😳
It's always a smart way to go!
Hi guys, great tips. We actually have used all of these. We loved the walkie-talkies especially when we were cruising with the kids It's been a while since we cruised but it's just like we remembered it. Good video.
got any tips to add? you’ve definitely done this more than we have.
Great info and tips!
thank you! ❤️
We are traveling to Alaska in August, and one of the things to be sure to take is binoculars. So good for whale and wildlife watching.
good call. have an awesome trip!
Yes ,! ! Kathy
Interesting to know they are searching your bags! Good thing to keep in mind 😉
yeah, better not try to get sneaky! 😅
You are both naturals in front of the camera.
We have been to Alaska by cruise ship and agree with your suggestions.
You are right about the weather. Part luck and part preparation.
thank you! we feel so awkward, but we’re gradually getting more comfortable with it. 🤪
There are some really great tips in this video! Ohh and the B-Roll is 🔥🔥🔥
thank you!
Hey, great tips! Maybe after our booster we will consider a cruise, and Alaska looks like a great place to go! Thanks for sharing your ideas! Stay well!
We can't recommend Alaska enough! AND the deal the cruise lines have with the state that led to the state opening back up was that all cruises were supposed to be fully vaccinated. So if that continues into 2022, you'll have that extra layer of comfort knowing that the risk is probably lower on a cruise than at your local grocery store!
Best What to Pack video I’ve seen!!
Thank you!
Really found this video useful - I'm heading to Alaska on Discovery Princess mid-July, and can't wait for it.
How exciting - have a wonderful trip! And thanks for watching, we’re glad you found the video helpful!
@@StephenandAndie No problem at all - have also subscribed to your channel - looking forward to seeing more! :)
Patti and I were wondering about the walkie-talkies from your previous videos. Ahhh, got it now. Great tips guys!
good eye(s)!
Great video, Thank you for the perfect amount of info. Do you have a video on your visit to Alaska ?
hi! thank you, and yes! we have videos from Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and our cruise through Glacier Bay. Check out the Alaska playlist on our channel to check them out!
Thanks for the tips. I never thought about walkie talkie due to the lack of phone signal and cost so that was really helpful. Nice to know that alcohol prices on board are reasonable too.
we find them handy in National Parks, too. And when we went on a road trip with the family in multiple vehicles. ☺️
Check on Amazon. They’re not as pricey as you may think. You can get a decent pair for anywhere from 39-79 maybe even less but it’s good to make sure they’re waterproof!
Going on our first cruise next week and we saved this video cause we remember it was super good. Happy Sunday friends
aw, thanks! we’re about to watch your cruise videos!
i agree with most every tip you shared thanks so much except towels. personal preference i like bringing my own towel when i travel for safety reasons
that’s really good to know! I never really considered the safety of using a hotel or cruise lines towels. What are your main concerns?
Safety towels?
Great one. Salute 👍👍
Great list! I’ve been researching Alaska cruises since Fall of 2019, hoping for 2020. The pandemic threw all those plans for a loop. But am now hoping for May 2023. I have watched dozens of packing tips videos and yours was the first one that had some original ideas.
Oh, that’s such a wonderful compliment, thank you! 2023 will come through for you - we just know it! Sending all the positive vibes your way (from on board our second cruise!) to help make it happen. 💪 Which packing ideas were your faves?
@@StephenandAndie The walkie talkie tip was great! And I'd never heard of "cruise luggage tags" before seeing it on your video!
Thank you😂 going next week princess discovery
Awesome! Right around the same time we went - first week of September. Excited for you! Have a BLAST, and drop back by and let us know how it went!
Super helpful! I have always wanted to do an Alaskan cruise! I was told they are the best in the world!
we’ve only been on a couple of cruises ourselves, but an Alaska cruise is high on our list of recommendations! I hope you get to go on one soon!
@@StephenandAndie Me too, I have never been on one!
I like your tips! I’ll be going to Alaska next year September cruise 🤗
Thank you! That’s exciting! We’re sure you’ll love it. Alaska is beautiful! Are you cruising through Glacier Bay?
Quantum? See ya 2morrow
Thank you for useful information. We get layers. We get vpn. And the drinks package it's good for people who like to drink.
Thanks for watching! 😃
Thanks! You two are adorable!
thank you! 🥰
USB Chargers are essential anytime we are out for the day. Only having cash; and the cash you want to pay is always a great idea!
it's the worst when you run out of battery!
Good info.
Thanks!
Oooooh a walkie talkie is such a good shout! I can also imagine it’s quite fun to play around with one haha 😂
totally! we took them on a road trip with Andie’s family when we had to take 2 cars. Andie and her sister had too much fun with them. 😂
Wow! It's a really cool video.. big LIKE!!😊
Thank you so much for sharing the video. My friend~!!!😊
These were all great! the UBS port is important for us vloggers. The walkie talkies are such a great idea! I remember not seeing family for hours when we went on a cruise. 😆 I really liked the screen y’all used to countdown
Thanks! 😀 Yeah, the walkie talkies are as fun (ok, probably MORE fun) as they are practical! And it kinda sounds like maybe you were tryna avoid them just a little? 😉
Lots of great ideas here. We, too, are fans of ponchos! Particularly like the water bottles (good to hear that the water is drinkable) and the walkie-talkie idea is inspired! Interesting that wine is allowed but other alcohol isn't.
right? but only one bottle. if you want to drink more than that, you gotta buy it on the boat.
We have our own USB charging dock and we have about 10 phones that we need to charge at the same time! HAHA. Great list of items for this because we have never been on a cruise, but we will definitely be prepared. Walkie Talkies is interesting and would have never thought to bring those. Great video overall! Hope you guys are doing well.
OMG, 10 phones? I can't even imagine! 🤣
I should do a video on what to pack for quarantine!
lol! That could be fun to watch!
NO to bottled water in single use plastic!!! Thanks for sharing a great reusable bottle 👍
We couldn't agree more!
I would have never thought of walkie-talkies. What a great idea.
we love them! and if you’ve seen “Saving Silverman” you know how we use them. 😆 (if you haven’t seen it, search “saving silverman walkie talkie scene.” we love stupid comedies 🤷🏻♀️)
Where going in June to Alaska on the same ship!!!
Already knew much of what you went over, have been cruising for awhile, also I lived in Maine for a few years and the weather can be quite similar. However, for a first time cruiser lots of good information.
With most smart phones you can still text when in airplane mode. Also, cruise line apps offer away to contact those in your group and some offer away to contact anyone you befriend on the ship, each app is different so you have to go through the information to see.
thanks for adding this! and have an awesome time in Alaska!!!
I will be on this cruise as well!
@@traciebowers5159 That’s awesome! We hope you enjoy it as much as we did! Alaska’s so beautiful.
Lol ..I rewatched the video yes no power surge protector 😂6:38 thank you
😁 You’re so very welcome, and thank you! When’s your cruise, and with which line?
Most insightful tip: VPN!
it's also great for accessing websites and streaming services, because you can make it appear like you're from another country, and then you can access their sites and shows/movies. There are some shows we don't have on U.S. Netflix, for example, but log into Netflix with your VPN set to another country, and you may find your favorite show is licensed to stream there!
@@StephenandAndie EXACTLY! We lived in England all summer watching our American Hulu and Netflix 👍👍
😊 Thanks for the great post and amazing magic content, I am happy to share your great work with us. Well done my friend Nice video Definitely nice post Great choice and very interesting. Big thumbs up I send you success and blessings Have a nice day
thank you
Most adorable tip: walkie-talkies!
we love them! helps keep us in contact, AND when we took them on a family road trip with more than one car, they provided hours of entertainment. 😂
I wish I had someone to share a pair of walkie talkies with😫😂❤🤞🏼 Roger, OVER
Wow!! Thanks so much! Y’all seem so kind. You’re exactly the kind of ppl we’d want to meet on a cruise. I have cruised four times (Caribbean) but hubby has not. We are planning our first Alaska cruise. Any month that like you best?
Your list of dos and don’t will be really a huge help! Just subscribed to your channel!
thank you! I’m so glad this was helpful for you. We’ve only been the one time, in the beginning of September, so we can’t really offer a best month to go. It was beautiful when we went, though! The entire summer is their “wet season” so plan on rain whenever you go.
Hi Liane. I live in Juneau. I think June and July are the best months to plan a cruise (and probably the most expensive). Most of Southeast Alaska is in a temperate rainforest so we are no strangers to rain. The advice to have waterproof footwear and dress in layers is solid advice.
Thanks, @Mari K for the insight! @Liane Albert, there's some expert advice from a local for ya!
@@marik2665 hello! I have a cruise to Alaska on the Norwegian bliss in the beginning of October 2022. Is there any tips you could give for that month?? Thank you!!!
Good hits ya’ll
thanks!
We bring flavored coffee creamer.
love that!
I am planning to take revlon hair dryer cum hot air brush for styling.can you please let me know If thats allowed on cruise??
It really depends on your cruise line. Check the website of your cruise for their rules. I'd hate to tell you the wrong thing.
Masha Allah bless sharing stay blessed and stay safe good video my new friend sharing stay
thank you 😊
Surge Protectors are not allowed, but power strips without surge protection ARE allowed.
thank you for the clarification.
What is the suggested amount of tipping. A waiter? Bartender? Room service? My first cruise and I'm a little scared. Also I'm 82 years old. Will there be a lot of walking to get on and off the ship?
great questions. with regards to walking, my impression was that there was a fair amount for getting on and off ship (and some standing in line, too), but please contact your cruise line to see if they can offer assistance. I’d be surprised if they didn’t.
With regards to tipping, that’s really subjective. First off, find out if your cruise charges or includes crew incentives. If they do, many tips will be covered by that. We tend to tip more than average, so we would still tip certain people additional on top of the incentives. Many people leave a nice gratuity for their cabin steward, for instance, because this is the same person taking care of you throughout your journey. With regards to the other crew you encounter, it’s entirely up to you and what you’re comfortable with. Tipping every person at every meal certainly isn’t necessary, however if you dine at a premium/fine dining venue and/or if someone takes extra special care of you during your cruise, or if you have the same person helping you in the main dining room most days, those are the people I’ve heard it’s most common to
tip a little more to.
$2-5 daily for staff, given at end of cruise, yes, walking plenty, on ship alone, let alone docks, food & Alaska r splendid 😊😅❤!
Didn't need the USB charging dock, plenty in the room.
lucky! what ship were you on? We had exactly 2 outlets in the room - definitely not enough for all of our cameras and devices.
yeah i guess this is a pack list for younger age group. I am not attached to electronics and also never will i over pack with unneccessary items
that’s fair. out of curiosity (and to help us with future videos), what kinds of things/advice would you like to have been in this video? We’re going to Alaska again this summer and plan to make an updated post, so if you have advice we’d love to hear it! thanks! 😊
LA, sorry about that
Hi , can u please reply if you need Canada visa for non US or Canada citizen going on Alaska cruise with Victoria port? I m from Asia . Thanks
hi, unfortunately we have no idea about that. The best thing to do would be to consult with the nearest U.S. embassy. The cruise line you’re traveling with may also be able to help.
@@StephenandAndie Noted . Thanks . Sadly neither the Canada Embassy or the Cruise lines giving clear details . They just recommended to take visa to avoid any issues whole boarding ..
@@bepositive5079 try contacting the U.S. embassy (not Canada) since your destination is the U.S. And check the U.S. Dept. of State website. They should have all visa requirements available based on your citizenship/residence.
@@StephenandAndie Thanks for the feedback . Noted .
Can you pack can soda pop and snacks?
good question! I’m sure you could pack snacks, but I don’t know why you would given that there’s food practically 24/7 on board. same for soda, although you’d be paying extra for it unless you got a drinks package.
Soda. Is extra $$_. Not included with meals. Coffee, tea, juices, r the normals.☕🍵🫖
What month did u go?
we went the very end of August/beginning of Sept.
Walkie Talkies…. Copy that!

Anker is the best !! I have bought 2 so far( small one for my purse which I have used at the Hollywood Bowl😍) (Damn Autocorrect!! I typed Anker and Naked got posted 😳😂😂)

Can we bring surge protector outlet ..
That’s a great and important question! … which we answer in the video. 😉
No.
Leave your laptop at home and focus on where you are!
Wait, you can only bring ONE bottle of wine? Is that per hour, or per day 🤣🥤
🤣🤣🤣
Wine ? Never seen this allowed, at ports u buy liquor & the cruise line will hold until end of your trip. ❤😂🎉
This is hilarious
Thank you for watching.
+ do not bring candles
that’s a good one!
Didn't need the hand sanitizer, there was plenty everywhere on the ship!
thanks for watching!
Who tips waiters & bartenders on an expensive cruise? As a travel agent, cruises have always been promoted as a whole package price trip where tips are given at the end of the cruise. Don’t ever think u need to tip in a ship’s restaurant or bar!
you certainly don’t need to, but many people like to give a little extra to the people who have taken good care of them. Just another example of how subjective tipping is in general.
Didn't need the walkie talkies, the ship had an app with a communication feature on it.
we actually used these off-ship more than on. We didn't have cell service everywhere we stopped, so the walkies helped us avoid roaming fees! (and they're just fun to carry around and goof off with 😆)
Good points and very true.
Two plugs?! That’s insufficient!
right???
I thought this was about Alaska packing. Oops, 3 items that everyone would know. Very derivative.
you 2 make a lovely couple and love the video
