I can relate a lot to the point for high quality but boring pieces. I have a few of those. I bought them because of the nice material and good quality. I thought I will wear them often, but I don't feel excited to wear them every time I try to style them as they are so basic, without any personality. I don't want to get rid of them as it is so hard to find good quality clothing these days. I started adding some details with lace trim, crochet edge, or altering the length of the sleeves etc. Some turned out great, some not. Still in learning progress. But I won't buy more of those type of clothing now I know.

I think the 80/20 principle resolves that problem. 80% of basic / essencial pieces and 20% of something special, statement pieces, it can be the bag, the shoes, the scarf, the jewelry...

interesting take! I love the way you build silhouettes and have actually quite opposite opinions to you-- in that I don't want my pieces to be timeless or to be super versatile; I like when they tell a very specific story and have a lot of character that is highly specific to me and my tastes; that studded jacket is a DREAM to me! You can definitely soften the edges and take it to be more boho, feminine, casual, or even full-edgy, but if you like a more classic look, it's not going to be suitable. in my style, I'm always looking to find pieces that are basic, but with an artistic flair. in any case, love the visuals as always

I would love a video where you tell us how many items of clothing you have in total and what you think your ideal range is for items of clothing. I am trying to figure that out for myself right now, because I know I am not minimalist enough to do a 333 capsule wardrobe or anything like that, but I do think I have too many items of clothing because I often forget about pieces I actually already own. Obviously this number is different for everyone, but it would be a fun exercise to see what your thought process is!

Trends are created by designers for brands to keep selling more and more unnecessary clothing to a world drowning in it already. They’re designed to make our current clothing feel outdated, and generally to sell clothes made from dirt-cheap, inferior, synthetic-fiber fabrics. These recent “trends” are good examples, they're all 100% polyester: sheers, mesh, lace fabrics, velour, terry cloth (originally cotton, but they’re using poly). If they can offload these cheap items, they make enormous profits. I only buy classic items in natural-fiber fabrics/materials; unlike synthetics, they have intrinsic value and appeal to second and third users if they don’t work out for me. A cashmere sweater or silk shirt in good condition will be worn and worn, and will be recycled or biodegrade at the end of its useful life. I recently sent my old wardrobe to a reseller (in seasonal batches) because I lost 50 lbs. over the last decade (from aging?) and needed to replace it. (I kept and altered what I could, mostly simple skirts). Every item sold quickly at its asking price, because they were all high-quality, natural-fiber classics and well cared for. I don’t make a ton of money doing this, but I know my items are loved and worn again. The little bit of cash I did make helped offset the cost of my new, smaller-sized wardrobe, which cost thousands, but should serve me for the rest of my life (age 63).

The cut of the studded denim jacket looks really good on you. It is a style I’d love to have. However i’d get tired of the studs, too. I am aware of items that are overtly decorated or glaringly stylish to be harder to restyle or stay loved longer. Now I also put down items like such no matter how dazzled I feel about them.

Another helpful video Helen, thank you! You are on point with the boring high quality pieces I guess it’s the first mistake many people make when decide to transition to capsule wardrobe and sustainable brands. I will also add a period of monochromatic looks only 😀 but it’s a learning curve just hoping I wouldn’t bankrupt till I got there 🎉

Great video Helen! Details in basics! So they aren’t plain (boring.) Whatever that means for me! For instance: this year I’m going to try to replace a ribbed white tshirt with a fitted 1/3 sleeve (to mid forearm) and slight scoop neck. More flattering for me.

Great video Helen! I can totally relate to the pieces where it is showing poor quality or when I had a lot of pieces, however, I couldn't style the pieces. Horizontal big stripes are also a no-go for me, it just doesn't fit: the sloppy/casual style. Further, regarding jeans the low rise/cut-out knee jeans are often a no-go for me, I'll wear it a couple of times and then realize it's just not my style. the LEVIS ribcage is the jeans I'll always reach out for. To me it's all the details and fabric and whether the piece is matching my style and body, keeping in mind which colours suit me the best. Less is more!

Feel so too. I believe it depends on your style. Maybe she doesn't overall feel so much drawn to edgy pieces and bought it cause it was cool. Like I feel like the same piece can be a regret for one person and a hit for another.

The lighter green make u look more young & bright & the darker green making u look more mature & dressy sometimes it depends on the mood or where a person heading. Lighter one look spring like & the darker look fall like so i guess some time its also seasonal feel.

This is a great summary of why some items don't work. Most of mywardrobe is classic items that last decades. Sometime I feel it's boring and try to bring in something more statement and on trend, but it doesn't work. Uniglo wide leg trousers in thick rib black cord were the last mistake. I should have bought the Massimo Dutti straight leg needlecord, less interest , more versatile and longevity.

I hand-wash sweaters then put them in those net bags with a zip and spin on medium in the machine. I've got one of those stretched net on a plastic frame drying racks to lay them out flat. It's quicker than using a towel and they dry quicker with air circulation.

Or perhaps put them inside a pillowcase for extra protection (for super sensitive fabrics) during spinning, but not before tying said pillowcase with a hair bobble.

Excellent tips - hope you don’t mind if I piggyback off of you to discuss caring for silk & delicates! I actually find wool & knit maintenance way more time- and labor-intensive and was surprised to learn that she avoids silk. Over time I also find silk satin to be less susceptible to wear and tear and I’m a lot more precious with knits, the most expensive of which can still pill, snag, etc just because it’s less tightly woven. Btw, people should really know the difference between fiber and fabric. Usually when people refer to silk they mean silk fiber (the raw material) in a satin weave (the actual fabric). But silk can also come in different fabrics like a silk ribbed knit, silk noil, silk chiffon, etc. Also silk NOIL is totally underrated - affordable and low maintenance.
One thing to remember for both silk and wool laundry is to avoid enzyme-based detergents. You don’t need anything fancy - there is a helpful Wirecutter article that breaks down some of the most popular items on the market. You can honestly ignore the part about sticking to no-rinse options when it comes to everyday silk basics that don’t have more delicate elements like lace or boning.
Lingerie experts agree that for most garments, machine washing on the hand wash cycle is just fine (ie cold, low spin,

Thanks Helen, I really like the idea of this video although I did just want to say that it is worth doing a bit of research on what returning clothing ordered online entails (there was a great piece in The Atlantic about it in December, which is a good overview). The environmental effects on moving these items around to return to a depot, sort them, and return to the company etc are much more impactful than consumers tend to realise, and it is not unusual for that clothing to be immediately disposed of or sold off to a liquidator once returned. I know that creating content requires different purchasing habits than the average person but just wanted to point out the negative effects of ordering clothing specifically knowing it will be returned vs showing an image or even trying in store to show on a body.

    • @DailyHelenJ
      @DailyHelenJ  5 місяців тому +2

Definitely will do some research now into this. I ordered from The Iconic which is a local Australian retailer. I believe they don’t engage in throwing out returned clothes as I often receive things that have been clearly tried on by many people (idm tho). I try not to purchase from places like shein etc that I know would just throw returns away. I’ll look into this further but whenever possible, I do purchase from local so less transport and reputable retailers. Of course I’ll also try to find some balance between useful content whilst minimising ordering/returns.
