Best videos ever. Can see each step so clearly. I am a beginner and I could never figure out the sucker topic…. Now I was able to see clearly. Thank you
This is very interesting. I never knew to separate the babies from the mother leaf. I have always just cut off the mother when the babies were large and growing. I did not realize that I now had several plants in my pot. But they did grow and produce flowers so I was happy. This time I'll try it the right way and see the results.
Thank you, so much, for your most informative way of introducing me to propagating African violets and planting the babies. You give me new hope! Your tour of your grow area and basement absolutely amazed me! I knew then that I had found "my girl"! Thanks and keep up the GREAT work!
Thank you for this video, it helped me with my violet babies. I got the leaves from you several months ago they are just about ready to pot up the babies. now I know what pots to plant them in.
Another informative video. Questions … 1. is that felt lining the bottom of the plastic container? 2. Is it wet/damp? 3. Do you cover the container? If so, for how long? Thank you again….so very much!
What a wonderful journey watching them grow from start to finish. Now I realise that the process is gradual and I will need much patience. Thank you for these videos.
Thanks for the info☺️. I just started propagating them last year an I’m a lil addicted to it now. Lol Love your videos 💚 can’t wait until spring. You have beautiful collection.
HAHA, you got bit by the violet bug and now have the incurable fever hahaha... happened to me 25 years ago and I am still not over it (lol) Don't even look for a cure, it doesn't exist (lol) Enjoy your new hobby Angelas and hope it will add a lot of happiness and color into your life. Tina xx
@@BloomloversAfricanVioletsI have been bit as well, Tina. 😊🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ I used to focus mainly on standards. I met someone who has a huge mini and semi collection...she was selling some off because she was having surgery. Bought 30+ leaf varieties from you and have 7 plants on the way from another grower. 🤣🤣🤣 I think I'm gonna need a bigger house! 😅
Fantastic video - all my questions were answered. Keep up the great work and I wish I could visit your facility and see your your amazing collection. 💕
Robert, I’ve been growing and propagating African violets for years, with no real good information, only luck. Now that I’ve found this on UA-cam I realize I could have done so much better if I’d had the information in this video. Don’t be afraid... go for it!!! You’ll love it when you grow a new plant!!!
I am so glad I found your video.. It's time for me to transplant the babies and maybe you can suggest the best type of soil I could use. Your suggestion would be much appreciate.. Thank you!
Hi. Just recently found your videos and so enjoy all the useful information! I recently followed your process of starting new violets from the leaves. I put the potted leaves in a small plastic oblong storage container, added a bit of water in the bottom for them to soak up and covered them. I've been checking them every week and the soil remains moist and the leaves are green and healthy but there isn't yet any sign of new babies. How long do I leave these inside the plastic container?
Mam just wanted to tell you that I have watched almost all of your videos... They are very informative and I am really glad to see your videos... I wanted to know how many months does it take to reach that size which you have seperated... Mine is still very small.. And it sprouted since December...
Hello Apum, they don't all take the same amount of time and a lot has to do with the growing conditions but normally they sprout between 1-3 months, and then it usually takes 3-6 weeks before the babies are ready to be separated but again, a lot depends on the growing conditions and also some varieties will grow slower than others, it is all mother nature's call on that one, you really have to wait until you find they are big enough and you feel comfortable to separate them. As long as they are one the mother leaf, they are safe so just let them grow out on the mother leaf for a good period. Hope this helps. Tina xx
Enjoying the videos and info. Can u tell me what the blue "cloth" is in the clear tote u put the new babies in is? Looking forward to next video. I don't think any other channel gives the info u do! Great channel!
Hello Kathy, as soon as the basic how to videos are out, I will get that one done up about those blue wicking mats I use. Before I do the video I have to do some research of where I got these as many will want to know.... This video is at the top of the list right after I get the basic how to videos out so it won't be too long.
Never thought of just carving a hole in the side of the solo cups, so much easier than using soldering iron at the bottom. Probably makes bottom watering a cinch 😀
I'm so happy about your videos! I see a lot of mistakes in what I was doing ( which might explain my not so successful babies lately!) I was wondering which little cup you use? Which size is it? ( i used to put the babies in full size adult pot)
It's when I read messages like this that it confirms that creating this channel was a good idea. It is soooo sad to go thru all of the propagation process just to plant up the baby and watch it die .... thank you for this question. The little white cups I showed are called solo cups and I bought them many many years ago and don't know if they are still available. You may want to check at wallmart. Dollarama or Dollartree also have a whole bunch a small things, they may have something suitable. You want to find something plastic that you can make a hole in the bottom, something about 2 or 3 oz (think of a little shot glass times 2 or 3. Something many use are simple little yogourt cups, they work well. Hope this all helps. Tina xx
Thx for the info. Great video keep up the good work. My question is about a baby that started and lost the mother leaf. I knocked it off when bringing it inside. (I caught an amaryllis branch on a grow table. I did some indoors and outside to see what would do better.) Should I just leave it be. I don't know if the stem will just dry up and not rot the baby out.
Hi, I love both of your videos on dealing with leaves and planting babies. I do have one question though that wasn't addressed in either videos. Can you wick water the leaves as they are growing babies, and once when you separate the babies can you wick water them. I used to be an African Violet serial killer, that is one day watching a Rick L video on lighting. I am glad to say that I have changed my ways. Under artificial lighting, my collection has grown and all of them except one that is not under artificial lighting is in bud or bloom. Your videos are a real big help.
You can indeed wick the plants at any stage. You must however have mastered the wicking method, by this I mean that you have figured out the right soil mixture for your environment otherwise if the soil mix is not right for the wicking meathod, you may rot out your leaves and babies. Wicking is a great and easy way to care for plants but the soil mix really has to be adequate. If you haven't seen it, I do have a video on how to setup the wicking method here ua-cam.com/video/q6iN_sd-Ch0/v-deo.html hope this helps Tina xx
Hello. As this is the first time I’m trying this, I have a few questions. When you put the baby plants in the incubator box, is that cloth in the bottom of the Box wet, damp or dry? How do I care for the babies while they’re in the Box, watering and fertilizing? Thanks. Your video was very helpful.
Tina, another great video! Thanks for all the info. I have two questions on fertilization if you don't mind. 1.) How soon after planting the separated babies can we fertilize and at what strength? 2.) When you stick the new leaves, do you fertilize them?
Hello Gladys, when you plant leaves, it is not necessary to fertilize for a few weeks as there are no roots to take in the nutrients. Very fine roots will appear after a few weeks and then you can start fertilizing. I have always suggested to use one forth of the dosage recommended by the manufacture. Violet roots are VERY fine and can be burned easily so by cutting the dosage 1/4th strength, they get what they need and the roots don't get damaged. I will make a future video on the subject. For the young babies, you can start fertilizing immediately as they have roots but same strength, 1/4th dosage. Hope this helps. Tina xx
