  • What is the best betta fish habitat? It would have to include a filter that doesn't blow fish around while at the same time keeping the aquarium pristine. Is the Sicce "Micron" the right filter for this job? Let's take an in depth look at the Sicce Micron and replace the current filter, a Sicce Shark Pro 500, with two Sicce Micron filters. Will these filters provide the best betta habitat in my "Betta Duplex?" Here's the full review along with my best betta habitat tips. Take a look and share your thoughts and tips in the comment section. We all learn from each other at this channel.

    Hi Ben
    Great betts setup. I currently have 16 bettas …. Most are in 5 gallon tanks but 3 are in community tanks. All are doing well. I have a betts rescue which I try to give them a good life for as long as they can live. Some are in pretty bad shape when I get them. But they get healthy as time goes on. A girl I know gets them and reaches them and I also take some of hers as well.
    Thanks for the video. Always interesting !!!!

    Cool video. The Sicce Micron is definitely good for betta tanks. The Fluval Nano internal filter is another good choice for betta tanks.

    Those are just beautiful bettas. And since bettas are the rage these days, I remind everyone black friday is only a month away. 10 and 20 gal complete kits wll be everywhere. It would make a great Christmas for any kids that have shown interest. Even us grown ones. Thanks for sharing with us ben.

    👍😎 Duplex looks nice. Fish look happy. We got keys yesterday 🤗 (Cookeville) found 3 LFS’s. 2 were ones I wouldn’t go back to, stinking & dirty tank’s. One pretty nice, not real big but was very nice.

    If I have the filter vertical the water flow seems to almost stop. It flows well horizontally. Am I doing something wrong? Also, how long do the carbon cartridges last?

    That looks like a version of what that horizon 8g tank comes with now as they changed it, the tank with the 3d wall, i am like you now though and given up on that tank and got my Betta that was in it a nice Fluval Spec, all you need is a sponge to put on the outflow.
    Good old fashion sponge filter is still best for Betta imo, one small quiet pump will do all 3 sections too.
    BTW How do you feel about Spraybars? i have a flow problem in one tank i cant get right so may dump my whole spraybar setup on it lol

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Рік тому +1

      Fluval Spec's are very nice looking set ups. Regarding spay bars, I'd rather break up the surface with bubbles or an upward pointed wave maker.

    I know this is an older video, but if you see this, how well did it suck up debris from the substrate when placed near the bottom?
    I just set up a 10 gallon tall as an upgrade for our halfmoon betta, and gave him some harlequin buddies (have options to move them if it doesn’t work out). The HOB it came with needs the flow set low for the betta, but in doing so, detritus settles at the bottom of the tank. I’d like to increase flow down low to keep things a bit cleaner but not sure what to do. Switch to a submersible filter? Add an air stone, add a baffle that redirects the flow straight down the glass behind the filter and turn up the flow adjustment? Just get used to the detritus and add leaf litter and let mulm settle in and deal with it? I know this wouldn’t be as much a problem if I didn’t go for the small footprint column tank size, but I had space on a fish stand in-between the cabinets that was perfect to fit the 12.5x12.5x 19 tall tank. Pretty much couldn’t go bigger footprint so figured why not go taller to at least help water parameter stability.
    Not completely against just letting it sit there either, it’s just I don’t have any rooted plants in this tank to benefit from it and all of the plants feed from the water column and are attached to one large centerpiece of driftwood and rocks attached with expansion foam so I can easily remove one piece to clean the small column tank

      Hi Chris, After using the filter for a while, it filtered great but the suction cups kept coming loose, so I replaced it with basic sponge filters and it's worked out perfectly.
      Here's what you'll need:

      @@BenOchart thanks Ben! After your advice on yesterday’s live stream on not being able to really combat the detritus while still maintaining low flow I decided to lean into the mulm look and gathered some leaves and twigs from the backyard that I know don’t have any pesticides on them and boiled them and put them in the tank. Not going to go full on backwater but it doesn’t look half bad with the leaf litter and a very slight tea color. Harlequins don’t seem to care one way or the other, but I’ve caught my Betta investigating the leaves quite a bit, and the clown Pleco likes to hide among them when not hiding in the spiderwood and Anubis.

    Question…can you put a small piece of filter floss under the sponge in this? Im thinking that would work no? Also whats better i have a crab tank with 5 gallons of water in it. Is the sponge better or the cartridge with sponge and carbon.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Рік тому

      I wouldn’t because it would clog up too quickly.
      With crabs I’d go with a sponge because the crab will pick food off of the sponge.

    • @ronbang
      @ronbang Рік тому

      Its an enclosed filter. The crabs 🦀 cant get to the sponge.

  • @cathytai

    So, I have the smallest nano size and it's odd that when I change the carbon filter cartridges the tank gets MORE cloudy and discolored , (yes I rinse before installing) and even though it is running at top volume, the tank is murkier than before I replaced it. Anyone else experience this? I have it in a 10g with live plants and White Cloud Mt Minnows and leopard danios, careful water changes etc etc and the tank is cycled. Pea gravel gravel substrate and rocks and branches. It had become crystal clear... until I replaced the cartridge. ? Thanks!

    • @chris1190steelers
      @chris1190steelers 8 місяців тому

      When you remove carbon filters you are also removing beneficial bacteria. If your cloudiness is a milky white color of any shade it’s probably an algae bacteria bloom.
      If it looks more like dust and debris it’s probably detritus that was on the filter cartridge becoming loose when you remove the cartridge and pouring into the water column. If it clears up within a few hours it’s likely this is the cause as that debris is just sucked back in and caught by the new filter.

  • @elliea9557
    @elliea9557 Рік тому

    So basically Bettas don’t need those air bubbles that are created by most filters, right? Can I just remove the air pump and stop the flow of bubbles? How is the tank gonna get oxygen then? Just from the water? (Newbie owner here 👋🏻)

    Does anyone have any advice for me, I just got a betta, he’s in a 10 gallon and I just got my water tested like 4 days ago and it was fine (i’ve had him just over a week) but he’s been acting so weird i feel and it is getting better so maybe he just needed to adjust, but he’s been hanging at the bottom a lot but it’s mostly in plants when he is on the bottom, but he kinda goes through really really sluggish periods and then gets super erratic and sometimes im scared he’s going to hurt himself and then he just chills at the bottom again. when i got him he had what i believe to be some healing cuts on his head and he did have a couple fresh cuts as well and im not sure how to treat those. i’ve been told epsom salt but i don’t know how that works. I know it’s vital i do a water change so im doing one tomorrow im just super nervous because he already seems stressed out

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  Рік тому +1

      Just do small water changes like 20% once a week and keep the temp around 80F. Be sure to condition and temp match any water you add. Be sure to not over feed. Just a few grains of food once a day is fine. Also be sure that there isn’t a lot of water motion. They like it calm. I hope this helps.

      I wonder if it could be caused by excessive flow. Bettas often hang out towards the bottom, behind heaters and under HOB filters if the flow is pushing them around and they get tired. I wonder if the energetic spurts is him swimming in the current and then getting warm out and hiding at the bottom in a dead spot
