Dear snare drummers. You don't need to hold taiko bachi like a real drumstick. It's quite different because if you do use your pinky on the back of the bachi, it stops the roll movement (how taiko no tatsujin !NOT DRUMMING! rolls work is where you pinch your index finger and thumb around the stick, nothing else on the stick. Your finger and thumb becomes a pivot for the stick to move up and down via drum bounce. This is not double stroking, you are using 1 stick to hit the drum over 5 times in a single hit.) The tatacons cannot roll because their material stops the sticks from bouncing. Taiko bachi is also 2x thicker than Western drumsticks. Also the drum is so solid and rubbery compared to a snare, a pinky behind your stick would really hurt. You CAN play taiko like a real drum, but taiko no tatsujin's rolling ends up way more efficient than proper drumming techniques because it takes less effort. You literally only swing once for 10-14 hits. That's all!
also as for 'hey if you only don't need to hold it properly for rolls, why don't you hold it properly for everything else?' because I find that the way I hold it makes it easier to quickly transition into rolls than redoing my grip completely. Some songs need you to roll (aka don or ka so fast you have to roll them) throughout a song, so yeah
Well I actually know a couple of drummers who play like that, and as an orchestral drummer as well as a jazz/metal set player (playing marimba on the side) who ALSO happens to try Taiko a few times, that it's fine. Every stick takes its own technique, and my god are those sticks thicc. (Thanks I'll take my poetry award now.) Personally I grip it more like a normal drum stick but then again it is just because I am used to the motion.
if anyone wondering how taiko no tatsujin rolling can be more efficient than buzz rolling on a western snare, this guy hits the drum once taiko no tatsujin style and lands over 25 hits!! ua-cam.com/video/HhGiuWJZhDY/v-deo.html

I have been using the cheapo one for a while and I only just recently moved up to the Hori one. I will say that the cheapo one is fine for what it is but there is one thing about it that I loath. There is a ring of plastic between the dons and kas. If you hit that plastic (which is very easy to do) it will not register a hit. I have failed many FCs due to this design flaw. Furthermore, the dons are not nice to hit. It can get the job done but I do recommend to save up money if you are in a country such as mine where the Hori drum is around 100 dollars to import. I feel that the investment will be worth it if you really love Taiko and play it often.
Perfect timing, I just upgraded from a switch lite to a normal switch and wanted to get a drum controller. Was about to buy the knockoff, googled the difference and found your video. After seeing the difference, now I will buy a hori! Would like a taikoforce lvl5.... but lets see how good I get first :p Thankyou for making this video! :)
In this way, I love you because I explained it in an easy-to-understand manner even for those who do not know Taiko no Tatsujin, and I enjoyed playing Taiko no Tatsujin! I'm sorry I'm not good at English! I used Google Translate!
This is one of my most favourite games and thanks to this, I found out about the rolling technique I didn’t know about. But when I saw the thin drumsticks I got surprised because the ones we use are entirely thick and made of wood so I don’t think I can necessarily do the rolls unless I can handle the hit. I will try this technique once we’re allowed back out again.
The most responsive of the PS4, Switch, and wii Taiko controllers is the Switch Taiko controller, and the PS4 and wii Taiko controllers are sometimes unresponsive, often with a corkboard or clay inside to make them more responsive.
I just got the nameless brand in, and I had to look into if it was just me or if the controller was holding me back. It's my first time getting into taiko, but not my first time in rhythm games. This video definitely made me decide to go and spend the extra on the official controller. and yes the nameless brand slide around so much.
Let me apologize on my behalf for all the drummers out there that think they need to educate everyone on how you play drums (in a western style). Like bro, it's not constructive criticism, it's just them trying to show off by saying, "yeah I've been playing drums for a while". People have to understand, there is more than percussion instrument, and they all have different techniques. You can't use the same technique for a marching snare, to a drum set, to a timpani. And that's what makes us percussionist special, we have to master every single technique for every different instrument we play. Take a good look at the cavaliers 2008 show samurai. It's a perfect example of percussionist learning how to play traditional Japanese drums, and guess what... They play them correctly, how they are supposed to be played.
And before you say, the rolling part might get more points if you roll like you would on a snare drum instead of the buzz roll, you are probably right, but that's not how they do it traditionally. It's the same as saying you should double stroke roll when playing timpani's, and we all know rolling on a timpani is just really quick single stroke rolls.
I've only used the official switch Taiko drum, but got really annoyed at how much it would move around when you hit it, even after inserting water bottles in the bottom slot of the stand. I also felt like you had to hit it really hard for it to register your hit. The 380$ drum is really, really tempting though...!!!
I want a taiko force lvl5 so much.... it looks amazing. The feeling of an official taiko cab is incomparable. If the Taiko force lvl5 can replicate that feeling no priceis too high! I might need to save some money.
Now I know what I want for my birthday....that TAIKOFORCE!!! I simply can’t thank you enough for doing a review on the drums. I’m super obsessed with this game. You have no idea, I wish in the future for this awesome experience soon. 😭😭❤️
I wonder, wouldn't it just be a good idea to buy a drum pad, like the ones you'd find on an electronic drum set? They have sensors for the rim and the pad itself, and you can even get mesh heads, which I imagine would feel very nice.
The big Taikoforce drum actually looks like a good practice drum for people who properly play Taiko. Though I’ve already bought a shimedaiko myself for twice the amount... 😅
Thank you for sharing your experience with the drums. Really needed someone to show the difference between them. The sound/loudness when you hit them was quite important to me as well as how firm they stand. There is just one more question I have: How is your experience with the latency? I talked to many people about all three drums, but it seems like most experience different offsets especially when you compare different drums to each other. Could you maybe give comment to that? I'm about to buy the Taikoforce, but it worries me if the latency might be bigger than expected. Greetings from someone who is since 10 years a fan of TNT
hello, I'm on my boyfriend's computer right now. There's not much delay on all the controllers. But the sensitivity is very very different. i recommend modding the official tatacon. I much prefer playing the official one over the taikoforce right now after modding. Very small and convenient! Taiko is my favourite game
Thank you for making this video. I wanted to get a drum controller for my Switch version because the motion controls on the joycons seems too sensitive sometimes, but also not registering on rare occasion. This is my first time playing a game in this franchise and I want to experience it with the drums.
I've been telling my friends this whole week that I want a taiko drum and I wish I could buy the one similar to the arcade version. It seems Tokaku have been listening to our prayers I guess.
When doing the drum roll, because it has no knock back I just hit the drum repeatedly even though I know it’s now supposed to be like that, it still works really well and you can get around 20+ drum rolls (as in the fan opens up on the top and says how many hits for the drum roll you did)
The brandless one reminds me so much of the Wii one. I bought one just to see what it is like but after playing a song or two just resorted to using the remotes.
Would normal drum sticks be easier to do rolls with? And plus a regular drum stick would be more balanced making it (in theory) a better accessory for the controller(s)
Bigzell I haven’t tried it but I assume using normal sticks on any other than the most expensive one might mess up the drum itself. Could be wrong though
John Marcus lathar theyre not good because they cannot roll (taiko no tatsujin style rolling where you only hit once and the sticks bounce on their own) because the sticks aren't sharp shaped and they're much much heavier than the sticks players normally use. Taiko no tatsujin players treasure rubber bounce above all.
but yes they are still playable. I know someone who does use actual drumsticks to play, the thing is that they're still too thin so he taped a ton of rubber grips to it till it became sharp shaped like taiko no tatsujin bachi
Question about the knockoff : Have you ever had the knockoff controller shut off on you and/or softlock your other controllers when using it on the Switch? I bought the PS4 version of this knockoff drum and found that it would continuously stop working entirely after ~5 minutes of use, also causing my PS4 controller connected to it to completely lock up and require me to manually reset the PS4 controller each time. I did eventually get the Hori version of the drum controller and have had no issues with it since then (granted it would slightly move around but i can fix that), but i've never had a controller lock up on me like that before.
PS4 controllers need to authenticate with the console, poorly made unlicensed controllers will be locked out after 8 minutes and need to be replugged to work again. Some good unlicensed controllers (anything by Brook, Dao/Gamo2, etc) spoof a license key and update their firmware when PS4 updates patch them out.
There are actually slots for weights on the Hori tatacon iirc. You can keep it from moving by placing two standard 500mL PET bottles filled with water at what looks like dedicated slots for it.
@@trillmxvsx8190 I bought it off eBay for ~$80 iirc. It's really hard to get them these days even in Japan. I was lucky to find a listing I was willing to pay for.
One thing you you could possibly do with the cheaper game pad is get the Vic-Firth "Chop-Out" sticks and then use them. Then the rebound would be in the stick instead of the pad. Love the video ❤
quick tip: When you roll you need to have a gap in your hand where the batchis rolls too. You where doing it right but you need to have the perfect gap. it takes a while to find it but you'll get there!!
Thanks a lot for this! For the brandless drum, to keep it steady you need to replace the feet. I just used a gummy tape (and tbh haven't moved it since). I have a question though. One of my brandless ones, the rubber wasn't totally affixed to the hooks inside the plastic, so it's peeling up a bit. Do you have any idea how to hook the rubber back in? I could take the rubber all the way off, but I'm worried I won't be able to put it back on. I really hope you have the answer lol, I don't know anyone who has any drums at all. For context the rubber just hooks in with little rubber spokes hooked into solid plastic. I just have no idea how it's done.
I'm considering buying the mid-sized 75$ drum, but do you have to use it with those specific sticks? I would probably find it more comfortable to use arcade-style sticks, if it works. This is a fantastic review though! Thank you!
arcade style sticks are MUCH longer than tatacon sticks which can make it feel a little awkward or uncomfortable to play with because the hori's drum face is quite small. There are wooden bachi out there specifically made for tatacons except they're a bit hard to find (all in japanese and less abundant). I recommend the default bachi for tatacon use in general. It's good enough! Modding the drum is a lot more important for hori
This is all very informative, but what about using the JoyCons? Seriously though, thanks for making this video! I don't think I'd go so far as to buy the TaikoForce, but it's good to know the Hori Drum is a decent enough option!
Fantastic. I finally understood how long bars run, you need that bounce. I have the Hori and the economic one, but now I want the big one haha. A greeting.
This is not double stroking, you are using 1 stick to hit the drum over 5 times in a single hit.) In this way, I love you because I explained it in an easy-to-understand manner even for those who do not know Taiko no Tatsujin, and I enjoyed playing Taiko no Tatsujin! I'm sorry I'm not good at English! I used Google Translate!
Man, people actually use a Drum for that?? I’m jealous of Rhythm game players, they get the coolest controllers and the best skills
I've played this game at arcades before. Super fun game!! Love the quality of the review from you ❤️🌹
The most responsive of the PS4, Switch, and wii Taiko controllers is the Switch Taiko controller, and the PS4 and wii Taiko controllers are sometimes unresponsive, often with a corkboard or clay inside to make them more responsive.
Best review on these drums. Thank you so much
Thanks for making this video. I was wanting a second drum so my husband and I could play together but I was weary of the cheaper version.
I've only used the official switch Taiko drum, but got really annoyed at how much it would move around when you hit it, even after inserting water bottles in the bottom slot of the stand. I also felt like you had to hit it really hard for it to register your hit. The 380$ drum is really, really tempting though...!!!
wow someone made an arcade sized drum.. that is pretty awesome.
I can recognise a fellow Singaporean’s accent anywhere
“You getting a MTN Xbox Series S bro??”
“No I’m getting a drum”
I wonder, wouldn't it just be a good idea to buy a drum pad, like the ones you'd find on an electronic drum set? They have sensors for the rim and the pad itself, and you can even get mesh heads, which I imagine would feel very nice.
thats pretty much what the handmade one is
@@LordLucario99 but it’s based on a taiko drum

Also, nice flexing your taiko skills on us!

What the hell im sitting here 12 at the night AND THIS IS ON MY RECOMENDED WHEN I DONT WATCH DRUM!!!!!!!!!!

ah yes, famous japanese rhythm game "DRUM".
do you play GUN? maybe RUN AND JUMP MAN?
12 at night? Im not sleeping till like 5 am or something like this.

Very nice! This is a whole new world for me and your videos are very good for learning :)
Ah this video was super cool! I'm really excited to set up my little taiko no tatsujin corner in my home and this will be super helpful!!
Oh god I loved playing this game when I was a kid. So nostalgic~
3:32 where the oura of arcaea appear
Sounds like team gremoire
I’ve been seeing this game recommended to me almost everywhere. Might consider buying it
Kyle Bolalin don’t succumb brother this is just another way to keep us quarantined
いい動画ですね!見ていてとても楽しかったです!
I don’t know why I’m watching this, i don’t think I’ll ever be able to play this game but it’s still entertaining to see you play
Thank you for making this video. I wanted to get a drum controller for my Switch version because the motion controls on the joycons seems too sensitive sometimes, but also not registering on rare occasion. This is my first time playing a game in this franchise and I want to experience it with the drums.
wow I was actually thinking about taiko drums when I saw this video
Me too
I've been telling my friends this whole week that I want a taiko drum and I wish I could buy the one similar to the arcade version. It seems Tokaku have been listening to our prayers I guess.
When doing the drum roll, because it has no knock back I just hit the drum repeatedly even though I know it’s now supposed to be like that, it still works really well and you can get around 20+ drum rolls (as in the fan opens up on the top and says how many hits for the drum roll you did)
this helped a lot when i was looking for a drum controller for the game, thanks!
I’ve never heard of this game let alone played it but I’m so glad this was in my recommended
Me: This is a random ass video *5 second later* wait a min I recognize that accent 🇸🇬
@@Jml615 the 300 dollar drum better be able to withstand a normal drum stick
John Marcus lathar theyre not good because they cannot roll (taiko no tatsujin style rolling where you only hit once and the sticks bounce on their own) because the sticks aren't sharp shaped and they're much much heavier than the sticks players normally use. Taiko no tatsujin players treasure rubber bounce above all.
but yes they are still playable. I know someone who does use actual drumsticks to play, the thing is that they're still too thin so he taped a ton of rubber grips to it till it became sharp shaped like taiko no tatsujin bachi
@@tokaku ah ok so there is reason to the abnormal drum stick. Thanks for clarification, and nice video btw. Very entertaining.
Me wondering what poor liquor store ima have to rob to be able to get the 380 dollar drum for Gura

I wish she put a link to the website she bought them off of, I’m really interested in playing Taiko now :(
Well the first two are on Amazon. So this might be why she didn't put a link.
you can still play the game on a console without the drums
@@warmbre4d but it's so much better with the druuuuuuuums
@@SupaSillyMexi yeah that's true, it sucks how expensive they are ://
Are they region locked? I play this game every time I see it when I'm in Japan; this would be beautiful.
Seeing this is actually really cool, even though I don't own any Taiko game myself.
Question about the knockoff :
Have you ever had the knockoff controller shut off on you and/or softlock your other controllers when using it on the Switch?
Where did you buy ps4 hori from? Also how much did you pay for it? All Im seeing are £150 ps4 horis from japan
@@trillmxvsx8190 I bought it off eBay for ~$80 iirc. It's really hard to get them these days even in Japan. I was lucky to find a listing I was willing to pay for.

You got me to buy this game I'm liking it so far!
Thankyou, this was an informative video, and a top quality product review
0:14 they actually have an american game now on apple arcade- its called taiko no tatsujin pop tap beat
that’s the one that i play!
One thing you you could possibly do with the cheaper game pad is get the Vic-Firth "Chop-Out" sticks and then use them. Then the rebound would be in the stick instead of the pad. Love the video ❤
quick tip:
When you roll you need to have a gap in your hand where the batchis rolls too.
You where doing it right but you need to have the perfect gap. it takes a while to find it but you'll get there!!
You are awesome, thank you.
I’ve never watched a taiko video ever and this looks so badass and I think I’m getting into it
Thanks a lot for this!
So you can connect those drums to PC?
Now we're going to have people playing Doom with drums.
fuck yeah doom no tatsujin
I SHOULDN'T HAVE WAITED! The drums have DOUBLED in price over the past couple weeks! Aaaaaa!
Girl your good at that
This is all very informative, but what about using the JoyCons?
Seriously though, thanks for making this video! I don't think I'd go so far as to buy the TaikoForce, but it's good to know the Hori Drum is a decent enough option!
I would like to have a Taiko force, too. ㅜㅜ
I wish they had that arcade game near me in the USA!
Fantastic. I finally understood how long bars run, you need that bounce. I have the Hori and the economic one, but now I want the big one haha. A greeting.
Thanks for the video, this was really helpful.
