Thanks again Ryan, Wayne Bergeron in one of a 3 part master class, discribed starting at the end with the last measure or part of the last measure and repeating that part until you get it down well several or 5-8 times in a row. Then continually adding to that measure.
I do this starting at the beginning, when I first started playing this was not music, it took time for the music to reveal itself, but now this process is becoming compressed, and can usually get up to the first 8 measures in a day or two. Once I get the song down it takes about another 3 weeks to clean it up, going back to Wayne's repetition on parts that don't sound right.
I select pieces that challenge me, i currently have a 16 measure movie theme, they require 32nd notes of high B-A....and to play to a high D. I cannot currently do this...but I will perfect what I can do and as I become capable of these, I will finish this piece...this has served me well in a piece where I used this approach.
It’s great you’re finding things that are enjoyable for you and that are challenging. The starting from the back end is great! I did an interview with Wiff Rudd at Baylor, and echoed those sentiments, saying when you practice from the back of the piece, it’s as if you are getting more comfortable as you progress throughout the piece.
One question I ask when listening to recordings in order to plan my own practice is what elements of their performance do I most admire/wish to emulate? This can inform of my own stylistic preferences and interpretation nuances specific to the piece that I’ve yet to pick up on which I can then build into my practice plan.

That'd be awesome! Is it generally the idea of working on a piece in 3 stages: (1 way under tempo to ensure you can play everything right from the get go, 2 more repetitions while moving the tempo up slightly, then 3 getting to your goal tempo)? Or is it something completely different?
Trumpet repertoire is embarrassingly bad.
