It is a song dedicated to the city of Florence and it's about a love story shared by three characters that were university students in Florence. A continous dialogue between the main character and the Irish philosophy student, Barbarossa, both left without the love of the disputed woman.
Graziani, grande chitarrista, ed incredibile paroliere. Se n'è andato troppo presto e senza il successo che avrebbe meritato, anche per il coraggio di affrontare temi allora (e in parte pure oggi) scottanti.
Concordo su tutto... Anche se non era il solo... Toccante il ricordo dedicatogli da big Renato Zero , Antonello Venditti e soci romani nella canzone "foto di gruppo"😢
He came from the same city as me, Teramo. Sometimes I find it hard to imagine how this small provincial town, with its slightly narrow mentality, could have given birth to an artist of such caliber.
Unconventional, whimsical, virtuoso on the guitar, vocally monstrous, he would have deserved much more fame and prestige on a par with artists such as Battisti, Dalla, De André, De Gregori, Battiato.

I'm really impressed to see an American talking about it, considering that Graziani was a kind of genius but sadly he's almost forgotten by now.

The girl that Ivan Graziani sings about in this song is not a real girl but the city of Florence, with which Graziani apparently was in love. In fact he was preparing his transfer to Florence before the disease took him away from us. The Barbarossa (the Irish philosophy student) of the song is a real character who is still alive: a friend of Graziani and also in love with Florence, where he still lives.

Well, this song is so difficult to translate. It talks about two men, the singer and Barbarossa (in Italian, "redbeard") who is a Irish friend of him and a student in Florence of philophy, both sharing the love for the same woman who seemed to refuse both of them.
Consider that Barbarossa was also the nickname Frederick I Hohenstaufen, Emperor of Holy Roman Empire, also known as Frederick Barbarossa or The Barbarossa in Italy.

A little mistake in the translations, redveard is translate litterally but is a Name, is "Barbarossa", i guess "Barbarossa" was the friend that togheter with him fall in love vhith the painter girl. They haved this strange relations with one girl for two boys but now is ended.
