This is 45% mask and it took over the whole body and increased his reiatsu so high he was vaporizing his surroundings.. they were shocked because this is NOT a typical shinigami hollowfication.
That's why I loved this anime so much. Even against fucking grimmjow beating - the - Ever - Loving - FUCK outta him-- he STILL didn't want to bring out his Hollow. He saw what it did to Byakuya. Kaname saved Grimmjow's life that night.

If you feel like checking out the fillers, watch it after you watch all the canon episodes (except the fourth filler ark,it goes well with the canon story so it is okay not to skip this one )

Everyone who pushed Ichigo really had no idea how terrifyingly powerful he could be; reminder, at this point he is still only at 25% of his maximum potential. Q.Zangetsu was actively suppressing half of his power, and using a false zanpakutou without an ausuchi halved him again. And he still won his fights with such a massive handicap.
this scene is both hilarious and terrifying knowing how ridiculously strong white was before bonding to ichigo’s shinigami powers and if that mask weren’t so easy to break shit would’ve hit the fan
