Keep in mind that there's a fair amount of cost in parts & labor to build a pedal. Costs to machine and paint the cases alone adds up. And there's a fair amount of wiring involved. The small companies making these pedals don't build in quantities like Boss, etc, and they build in the US. Whether the pedals are a sonic improvement is another matter. But I wouldn't say they're overpriced for what goes into them.
nice video! Excellent side-by-side comparison. Looking forward to more gear demos and comparisons, maybe with some analysis and discussion after the side-by-side.
That's why this is such a cool comparison - the pedals are completely different but with some tweaking can come pretty close to each other sonically. In an age where guitarists are paying big bucks for "boutique pedals" (absurd in my opinion), the reality is that if set properly, almost any pedal can produce a good, usable distortion. I personally think that we hear things that aren't always there, especially when shelling out $200 for a distortion pedal.
OCD smashes in this test, the DS-1 sounds like a thin solidstate distortion (which it is) but doing chuga chuga riffs isn't the best way to judge tonal characteristics, still good demo tho
DS-1 modded. It’s my go-to pedal if I want to do alternative songs like Veruca Salt, Nirvana, and Garbage and can nail those sounds on a Fender clean instantly.
You should subscribe to my channel and check out some of my other videos. I have several were I demo both the OCD and DS-1 and do just that. This video however wasn't really intended to be a full demo, it's mostly just a quick side by side to show the similarities and how they clean up while playing one part of one song.
They both sound pretty sick. Although I would say that the OCD is not exactly a pedal made for metal guitar riffs whereas the DS-1 is perfect for that. I would have loved to have heard some 80s rock tunes on the OCD in comparison to the DS-1, I think that's where the OCD would shine more. Great demo though :)
''OCD FULLTONE'' I WOULD GO WITH. I OWN BOTH OF THESE PEDALS AND GOT TO SAY THE 'OCD' GIVES YOU A RICH WARM OVERDRIVE SOUND. BUT THE 'BOSS DS-1' IS A NICE PEDAL ALSO, BUT IF YOU WANT SOME "DISTORTION" !!
You tried to make the OCD sound like the DS-1 (modded). You can't however make a DS-1 sound like an OCD. I have both pedals, the DS-1 is the cheapest pedal I own and sounds like it. The OCD is the most expensive distortion pedal I own and sounds like it. The warmth the OCD has is lovely. It sounds better than a lot of tube amps i've played on.
Dude, this is a heavily modified DS-1, I own od/distortion pedals way more expensive than the ocd and a missed DS1, and the modded DS1 sounds better than most full on distortion pedals You can get. As far as overdrive the ocd is great, but in the distortion world, the analog man modded DS1 is hard to beat.
The DS-1 is far superior. It just has to be used correctly. The pedal works best as a boost to the overdrive channel pushing the gain and sustain over the top I love mine.. It isn't really good as a stand alone distortion though. A modded Metal Zone would work better for that. The OCD is cheap crap IMO.
I take it you've played an OCD? It's certainly not cheap. The OCD is an amazing pedal that has amazing distortion tones with flexibility. I have both of these pedals. I can live without the DS-1, but I can not live without the OCD. It's simply an amazing pedal. This demo doesn't do the OCD justice at all.
@taez555 Hehehe. I love the OCD for its ability to get really muddy tones when you crank the volume and drive knobs, especially with the tone turned way down. I also admire how must sustain I get with it; I find myself playing lots of drony stuff without even needing to plug in my Russian Muff. I'm wondering what kind of voltage you're running through the OCD in this video, though? I love cranking it out at 18V, but if I want a bit of a cleaner sound, I'll drop it down to a 12V adapter.
I was going to ask why you were comparing a hard clipped distortion like the ds1 with a softclipped overdrive like the OCD, but damn, that OCD has some girth and bite to it. Im pleasantly suprised.
I love Dream Theater! I am trying to get a good Dream Theater lead sound out of Blackstar HT-5. What would you recommend: TS-9, DS-1 modded, BB Preamp, or the OCD?
I knew he uses Boogies but I just want to get a pedal that helps me get a thick tone like him. I like the Marshall tone so I might get a MI Crunch Box or the OCD and stack it with something to get a really thick tone.
Hey, if you want to play some really amp like pedals check out the Metal Pedals line up... Bomb Shell, American Overdrive or Hard Core xxx... the circuits are very different.
No chance. OCD really sounds better. Deeper, more sincere, wet and better lows. This does not means that DS1 mod really improves the DS1. But to me it has no chance against an OCD. David,
Very nice demonstration of two VERY cool pedals. I think they both sound splendid!
Great mod. for the DS-1 but the OCD is just a great all around drive pedal. Metal or Blues.And it loves tube amps.

I have never heard anyone play metal with the OCD until now

FINALLY SOMEONE PUSHING THE OCD! A must buy on my list.

If the Mid knob was turned up on the Analogman, sound would have been much fuller and thicker. That is why the mid knob was added.
Awesome demo! Great job

yeah great test !! good job
Heavy riff: DS-1 1:43 OCD 2:33
@hobbesismycat
ts9 or OCD if you want more agressive sound, I recomend the OCD
Nice Quality, Good Vid Thanks!

Thanks Corey Weatherford Maybe one day I'll be able to demo one.
+Corey Weatherford Not that heavily modded. I've modded one myself. They change a couple values. The difference isn't that profound.
I prefer the ocd, sounds nice and a little doomy even
Also I plan on using the pedal on my OD channel so hopefully it will get me at least that thick rhythm tone I am looking for.

PULL ME UNDER!!!!!
love dream theater!!!!!
good demo
what is the difference between overdrive, gain, and distortion? i always thought that they were the same thing
It's Pull Me Under.

David,
I'm surprised how Bogner-y the OCD sounds.
surprising how similar they sound, to be honest.
It's a BOSS!!!!!!!
+Riza Kidzo Thunder Road baby!!!!
Analog Man FTW
DS-1 by a mile. analogman knows what's up.
Although I'd take a Caveman Overdrive 2 over both... ;)
i'm looking for a good pedal that gives me some sick rock tones, both classic and hard rock. any suggestions? preferably a dual pedal :D
Sorry if this was already mentioned. What amp were you playing into?
both cool pedals. ocd cleaned up better, analogman sounded better cranked midrange voice more articulate
Both sound good but i think the OCD sounds a bit muddier.
Based on shitty UA-cam, heavily compressed audio, I think they both are very close.
if you use a OCD with a Boss Fuzz cusm you get a better sound =)
why then did you click on the video and watch it? I'm sick of people complaining when YOU don't have to watch the video
the end of the vid shouldve been: now lets try turning both on!!!
awwwwwwwwwwwwww yeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh
OCD RULEZ
The DS-1 sounds shrill like an MT-2. The OCD sounds much better.
Wow. The ds-1 is a little more open sounding.
seems like OCD isn't really the type of pedal to do chunka-chunk rhythms... not really highlighting the OCD's strengths
What if you do it on LP?
I'm not a big fan of the OCD's high gain, but it bit the DS-1, which I found far too tinny.
the ocd is not compressed at all. i like it more. the boss pedals low end and high sounds a bit compressed to me though
how much are these 2 pedals?
That's sort of the point of the whole video. :-)
What Dream Theatre song is this?
@taez555 I'm not such a huge fan of the version4. I prefer the 3 to anything else.
@JacksGuitars what?
I generally don`t like Boss distortion pedals!! They are sounding pretty thin!! OCD rules!!
@taez555 i own an OCD and I agree it is really compressed, i'm actually selling it.
what version is the OCD?
V.4. Mentioned at the beginning of video
VAI=DS1/ANALOGMAN
ocd for me.
you sound like someone from family guy
@TheSAJ11 mature? xD
Not really impressed with either one. Guess I will keep searching.
@pomfrit93 i like you
No distortion or overdrive pedal will sound good with a shitty clean sound like that.
distortion vs overdrive?? FAIL comparison
