HANDS DOWN! The best analysis/ reaction I’ve ever seen to this song. Man when you started playing, it literally gave me chills. Everything you were playing sounded absolutely amazing!! For me it actually enhanced the song.

If I'm not mistaken, this song is about Maynard's struggle with his mother, Judith Marie, being in a medical coma for a lot of his life at that point. I've always taken the comparison to Orestes to mean that he felt like he was duty bound to end her suffering but couldn't bring himself to do it. Thus, the need to "sever this umbilical residue keeping me from killing you." The line "Give me one more medicated peacful moment, cause I don't want to feel this overwhelming hostility." is especially wrenching. I feel like it also suggests that, even in the few instances where she was lucid, things were strained in their relationship. That must have been so rough for someone who clearly loved his mother deeply.

Maynard was only 11 when his mother died from complications due to the aneurysm. I think what Maynard is doing here is putting across the pain and anguish of losing his mother at this young age, by conveying the equally distressing pain Orestes was in at being in such a no-win situation that was forcing him to choose to kill his own mother. I tend to think he is saying "Put yourself in that truly horrible situation, could you do that to your own mother that you love so much, to save your own skin? How would you feel? That is how I felt grieving for my mother, at having to accept that she was gone forever"

Orestes, son of Agamemnon, grandson of Atreus, an Atreides himself. When Agamemnon returned to Mycenae from Troy, Orestes's mother and her lover Aegesthus slayed him. So Orestes avenged his death. But then the Erinyes, ancient Greek chthonic deities of vengeance went after him until Goddess Athena interfered. Oresteia, the Trilogy of Ancient Greek tragedies written by Aeschylus(5th century b. C.) it is of course about his journey to catharsis.

Probably their most underrated masterpiece about another masterpiece, Dune by Frank Herbert.

    • @Wolfborn8
      @Wolfborn8 3 роки тому +1

It's one of my absolute favourite Maiden songs, but given the lyrics, I'd say it might be much more based on David Lynch's Dune than Herbert's original material. Can't wait for the upcoming Dune movie, by the way! It looks like it's trying to be much more faithful to the original :)

@@samotargos5199 @Samo Targos You are absolutely correct; I don't know why but I got it in my head that the movie was from 1982. I haven't watched it in a long time, but it was also quite a letdown for me. I'm a huge fan of the books (and Lynch!), but unfortunately Lynch and the writers just really didn't seem to understand the book(s) all that well. It was still somewhat entertaining, though. If I had to go on a wild guess I'd say that given the lyrics in To Tame a Land, Iron Maiden had maybe only read the first book by then. Either way, absolute masterpiece, would love it if Doug listened to it!

The story of Agammemnon's family, especially in Aeschylus' plays, is a great look at the ancients' idea of justice. Basically, in the old poems and the pre-classical era of Greece, you were expected to avenge wrongs done to your family, especially murder. So Agammemnon sacrifices his daughter Iphigenaea to Artemis, Clytemnestra kills him for that, Orestes kills Clytemnestra for her murder, and then he flees to Athens. And in Aeschylus' telling, when he gets to Athens, Athena holds the Furies at bay, and institutes the first jury trial, where Orestes is eventually found innocent (at first it's a hung jury, and then Athena casts the deciding vote), and the Furies are turned into the Eumenides.
It's about the ability to use rule of law and a more civilized way of resolving conflict to, as you said, break out of cycles of revenge and violence. For a great modern-day sequel/commentary on it, there's a great Wonder Woman comic called _Hiketeia_ that acts as a self-conscious sequel to the Orestes myth that's absolutely great.
Anyway, this song is gorgeous, and it's great to hear someone really dive into it.

I stumbled across your channel over the weekend and I really like seeing you react to these songs and hearing you describe the things I’m not good enough to pick up on. I wasn’t a music major but I was in the jazz ensemble during college and my ear is decent enough but my knowledge of theory only goes so far.
It’d be interesting to see you react to Japanese music as it tends to have...idiosyncrasies that you don’t usually hear in western music, and even the generic songs tend to be more interesting to me than what is typically heard on the radio. I’m sure you’re probably bombarded with enough recommendations as it is so I’ll stick with recommending “Glorious Break” by Nana Mizuki. Her songs normally have a guitar but this one uses an orchestra instead, which I think you might find interesting. The live performances do add a distortion guitar so I recommend the studio version.

Nice to see a deviation from what started to be "your regulars"; it's truly welcome. There is so much worth checking that sticking with "regulars", in some way implies to repeat a situation you mentioned about Nightwish: "How did you missed them all these years?". So I'll insist with:
    - DRACONIAN's: 'Sorrow Of Sophia' (ancient greek inspired gnosticism, lyrics-wise)
    - VIRGIN BLACK's: 'Beloved' - 'Opera De Romanci: II. Embrace - A Poet's Tears Of Porcelain' - '... And I Am Suffering' - 'Museum Of Iscariot' (outstanding mix of symphonic elements and a superlative versatile singer ala Devin Townsend)
    - NE OBLIVISCARIS's 'Forget Not' - 'Painters Of The Tempest (Part II)' - 'Eyrie' (impressive use of violin, composition-wise)
In the same vein, metal-sounding, I'll add others barely suggested: HAGGARD - DIMMU BORGIR - A (Anonymous Confederate Ensemble) [A (エース)] - PARADISE LOST
And straying from the heavy side (specially the last one): ANATHEMA - THE GATHERING - UCHUU CONBINI

@@Doug.Helvering unfortunately King Crimson content is indeed known for having copyright issues on youtube, such a shame they have an amazing work that should reach more people.... Anyway, I really like your videos, keep up the great work.
