  • These are things I wish I would have known before I started driving a motorcycle/scooter/moto here in Cambodia. They seriously could save your life.
#1) When learning to drive a moto here in Cambodia, pick someone to follow around and watch how they drive and how they merge with the flow of traffic.
#2) Safety First: Have a good helmet, know your moto (practice braking and accelerating in a parking lot or quiet street), practice letting off the throttle and braking in one fluid motion, watch out for turns (there is often gravel, sand or dirt that is hard to see on the road), watch out for blind turns.
#3) DO NOT ASSUME. Do not assume people will stop for red lights, drive the correct direction, or follow traffic laws.
#4)Try not to make sudden stops or turns to the left or right. This can easily result in a wreck from someone coming up quickly behind you.
#5) Careful on blind corners and what is blocking your vision (parked cars, houses, moving cars or trucks, ect.)
#6) Don't rage. Find a way to laugh about things or find a positive way of seeing the chaos that exists on these roads.
    Hope this helps.

That was a good overview. Let me presume to add to it...
I rode in a tuktuk for everything in my first couple months. That's a good place to observe how radically different driving is in Cambodia. I was surprised that every intersection wasn't an accident scene. The Khmer are roadway masters of the unexpected but they seem to have developed a consciousness similar to that of fish in schools ; they swim close to one another but they don't touch. This is some kind of a zen and if you want to join the fun , you need to learn to feel that vibe. The tuktuk is a wonderful observation platform.
One of the unexpected things I saw from a tuktuk was that while traffic exists in a constant state of chaos , the Cambodians (unlike drivers elsewhere where chaos rules) don't lean on their horns , don't shout or shake their fists at each other. They seem to be deliberate about avoiding eye contact with others , even in close quarters. That matters as part of the zen ; focus on emotion is distraction from attention. Suppression of anger opens situational awareness. Understanding this has been key to my learning the zen. And it's made a better man of me to control my nether emotions too.
Forget about rules. The only rule is survive if you can. Accept that people will come at you suddenly from odd angles and play to expect it. Tip your mirrors a little more to the outboard to try and catch them coming from behind you. When you are making a right turn they will squeeze between you and the curb , screwing up your turn arc. Expect that and expect that they will drop out of the sky too. Driving a moto in Cambodia is a lot like running with the bulls ; if your heart isn't in the chase you risk being gored.
Above all things ; don't imagine that you can drive fast and stay healthy. Always wear eye protection and don't cheap out on your helmet.

As long as you always stay semi terrified, you should be safe. Once the wildness becomes normal to you and you begin to always expect the previously unexpected, you’ll be fine. 👍🏼
