About roaches: my friend had them really bad in his mobile home. They were dropping from the ceiling. Well, their furnace went out and they had to live in another mobile home in the mid 80's. When they came back to fix the furnace, the roaches were gone! I guess the bitter cold got rid of them. Interesting video!

Hello shango066. In my opinion, the vertical issue was caused by dust mixed with water in the air (humidity). It becomes a "conductive undesirable mash" especially around high impedance grid connections or sockets. It happened to me many times not only in antique TV sets, but also in audio amps and radios. I live in South Florida where humidity is always above 60-70 %. Before any repair attempt, the first thing I do, is a detailed cleaning of the set. It leaves me out of a lot of problems. By the way, I like your "horizontal test tube" as a sacrifice option in case of shorts etc, and It seems to me that 6AQ5 is a 7 pin low power audio pentode. Please verify this is the right nomenclature for this tube. Thanks
It’s actually a 6AU5. Not sure why he kept saying 6AQ5. 6AQ5 is a small audio output tube. The 6AU5 is a power pentode for small horizontal output stages. Similar to a 6BQ6 without the plate cap on top.
I can't think of much to say about the TV, other than I'm impressed with your perseverance. As for those little ice machines...they have everything a regular ice machine has, just much smaller. The compressor is about the size of a beer can. If you feed them clean enough water, they'll make perfectly clear ice cubes. The ones I've seen work very well. There are only two kinds of bugs I utterly despise...roaches and wasps. Could the roach remains have been conductive enough to mess something up?
I have to wonder how much of it was fixed by cleaning the chassis. When you're dealing with circuits that use resistors in the megaohms, it doesn't take too much most dirt to screw things up. It appears it got a lot better after the cleaning.

Before finishing the tape, I'm going to offer a theory at which you are sure to HOOT. Enough dust, hair, insect remains, animal waste, and / or smoking resins contaminating a DC circuit of this complexity will create destructive / deteriorative eddies, shorts, micro shorts, voltage divisions, RF stray dogs, and carne asada burrito morning afters.
Can confirm, in fact just yesterday I received an old set, filthy as can be. I set it aside in my workroom intending to come back to it today and much to my dismay, this morning I found the workroom littered with carne asada burrito remnants.
FWIW: I have a Hammond organ from 1955 in an unfinished basement. I can hear a difference in the sound depending on the humidity levels - which vary a lot - and how long it has been since I turned it on. Original caps and still sounds great, but getting a slight filter hum so needs a recap job - which is a total PITA.
Hi Shango, I enjoyed your video on the very old black & white TV Radio combo & one of the reasons as to why the TV audio volume could be low is it may have been made where the TV Audio may be played into the AM & FM audio Amp & the corp that made the TV may have had it where to Audio from just the TV chassis is lower as the AM & FM Amp can bring up the Volume of the TV as loud as you would want it to go. I recall years ago when I use to work at Grand TV in Duluth MN We would get some Magnavox TVs with the AM FM Radio & a Turntable in them. We would have to remove the TV Chassis & do the repairs in it & We would hook up a Speaker to the TV Audio out & on some units of the combo units & the TV Audio would be softer then a normal TV would be. On some of them the AM FM Amp would all so be on with just the TV & the Radio Amp would pull in the Audio from the TV Chassis & would give you extra better sound & be able to get lots of Volume out of it. So that is Just a thought that came to My mind as I was watching you try to get it to play much louder. I recall Mike at Grand TV had told Me on some of these old floor model TV AM & FM Turntable units the Radio Amp all so would bring up Your TV Audio all so. Not all models were made like that way but there were a few set up that way. The old Combo sets that came in to Grand TV were Color TV Radio Phono combos but we never had a Black & White TV Radio combo units that I can recall that came in. Its to bad that the person you got that from let it go to pot by Cats & Rabbits eating it a way & destroying the back & the inside Wires for the Radio & Amp. That old TV Radio would be worth something if it was well took care of & if the TV only just needed some small repairs. Take care.

Capacitors are a pain! I have O scale model trains that have electronics in them. They are now 20 years old and one can capacitor in particular fails. Chinese parts. Sometimes it explodes! It's a royal pain to replace but with care it can be done. Then they work again. Have to wear a ground strap when you do it or you can static blow other stuff on the boards. When I buy one now if that cspacitor is buldged I replace it. Your videos are very instructive.
I'd say this was a success for what it was, looked pretty hopeless at first. I applaude your determination to get to the bottom of the problems. Every TV has its own unique problems, but hey, you got it working far better than I could ever imagine.
I bought a brand-new Vector Research audio receiver back in the late eighties. All of a sudden it wouldn't play., anymore. I opened it up, and a frickin' cockroach had fried itself inside. For the price of a fuse, the little bastard had given it's life!

Shango's version of Sprague Kwikettes are better than the real thing, which are hard to find. The paper clips are cheap. Just get a box from Walmart or the Dollar Store.Transformers have thin enamel insulation around the wires which can break down over time depending on the environment. Wet paper wrapping will accelerate this if stored in a damp location. Put it in a clear plastic bag with a bunch of desiccant packs ( they say do not eat on them )and leave it in the house for a couple of days in a south facing sunny window and see if it will revive the transformer. Couldn't hurt. I rather don't like the multiple part videos on your site but this TV called for it. Got more of your wry sense of humor Shango!
I'm like you when I repair a vintage tv or radio,or any vintage electronic,I only replace the capacitors that are bad,lol,at least only on my own stuff,lol Im sure in my repair videos I give the people who just replace every cap needed or not,a heart attack,lol.Good video!

The other thing I appreciated - you cleaned the chassis - this can't be the real shango channel anymore - have you been hacked?? I like a clean chassis. But then again I also like hearing "i like dust" and "dust makes me happy" cause that makes me laugh.
Genuine question: is there a reason for not cleaning the dirt with a *gentle* pass of compressed air before attempting any repair? I wonder if dust and dead roaches are the cause of minor or intermittent issues in some of your repairs. As someone else pointed out, dirt can behave as a resistor, especially if the dust comes from long-term storage in industrial areas. My dad used to work with cast iron, I let you imagine how every surface in the shop got covered with black dust, that stuff is conductive and sticky as hell. Dust can even retain humidity in some cases. On the other end, I can see how compressed air can cause damage to fragile components if not used carefully.
Could you please explain how what you were calling a "Drive Line" is caused? It was bright in this case but they can it seems also be dark. If it degrades the horizontal linearity as you noticed yours doing then it must be unwanted velocity and not intensity modulation of the scanning spot. I was wrong about suspecting a supply issue with the Vertical/Audio issue then.
I struggled in the 80s with a sony KV191 and kv 192 , I think those were made for the south african market , as far as I remember I was not successful at fixing sony , I used to gey mostly philips , telefunken , blaupunkt , panasonic , saba , barlow vision , I hoped that I would see a kv 192 on your videos
THE AUDIO ISSUE. Do not hold me to this Theory but I think??? The audio from the TV is fed through the radio phono amplifier portion and is further Amplified to make it louder. I could be wrong but that is what I think is going on here. I think when you get to the radio ohono portion of the Resurrection that may be the case. Because the rabbits chewed up all of the wiring I assume you are not sure where that cable went to as far as the radio chassis. Just some food for thought. By the way those radio-phonograph portion of these sets worked very very well.
That's exactly what I was thinking! Considering the audio is being hooked up to an RCA jack that would go to an amplifier, it would make sense. I've hooked up speakers to line out jacks and get clear, but weak audio
Hm. I suppose you could use keyboard springs to make those lead splices. The heat will probably wreck the springiness but that doesn't matter. And they're pretty cheap.
bandersentv did a very nice video explaining what a horizontal drive line is and what causes it. I never knew it was a release of stored energy by the tuned circuit that powers the first half of the electron beam from the starting point from the left to the center, where at that point the horizontal output takes over and carries it from the center to the far right. If the handoff is not seamless, the beam slows down, then resumes the journey. That is why it is brighter and distorted in the center.
The trouble with roaches, is you spend all that money, and go to all that trouble to "tent fumigate" the house, and a few weeks later, your roaches are back again. My house is very cluttered, but there is no food for roaches around. I do have roaches that live in the plumbing pipes, so the only way to keep roaches out, is to keep all the drains plugged at all times.
45:25 I wonder if it moves the heat using a Peltzier solid state device. I still have one of those for a Pentium II computer CPU. Absorption system also another possibility, using heat to move heat. Old systems used ammonia, not sure it is safe to use that nowadays
I know absolutely nothing about TV or radio repair but I love watching your vids. So I have a dumb question. Is it possible that after you blew out the roach stuff that something organic could have been messing something up and you blew it out of there? Told ya it was a dumb question.
Not dumb at all. A lot of that crud is conductive to some degree, particularly in humid environments. And since tube circuits operate at high voltages those problems can render a device inoperative. It's even a problem with solid state equipment.
Shango please check the sacrificial tube number. I liked the option to have some cheap tube but I thing 6AQ5 is a 7 pin low power pentode, and according to what i see, this tube is octal type. Please check. I will appreciate it
Conductive roaches. I hate finding livestock in TV's. At work a huge roach as big as a Buick came out of a set. A tech froze him down with real freon & he was froze solid several hours. He thawed out & walked away. He thought he was Walt Disney I thinks. LFOD !
Olympic TV sets were kind of weird. I remember that most of the console sets were series wired and most of the portable sets had transformers. Go figure. Also a lot of Olympic combo sets would share the plate supply and lose volume if the rectifier is weak.
@46:00 or so.....Reminded me of the "76 BASS O MATIC" with Dan Aykroyd....just sayin. Odds are....it has a compressor ...I'd be very surprised if it uses diodes to get there.

I think I know what finished that set off. There was some other fault, so the man of the house - the Phantom Twiddler - who hadn’t touched the inside of anything electronic since finishing his national service as a radio operator 20 years previous went on a coil twiddling spree to try and fix it as he “knew what he was doing”, ended up making it worse and calling out that mobile TV repair van, who quoted a price that was too high for the man of the house to be willing to pay!
No, at that (physical) size, that water/ice-cube thing almost certainly uses a Peltier junction, and maybe a self-contained water circulation system like some desktop-class computers have, plus a small fan. I don’t know if a regular A/C compressor and associated tubing would scale down to that size. Maybe it could be used to cool off hot, red-plating vacuum tubes. But that’s just a guess. And shotgun any roaches you have with wax/paper capacitors; roaches LOVE leaky capacitors. 🤣

I wonder if those ice makers use thermoelectric Peltier units instead of a refrigerant.
They have tried the Peltier units, but the efficiency is so low that they aren't practical from a size standpoint and a power consumption standpoint.

Olympic TV sets were kind of weird. I remember that most of the console sets were series wired and most of the portable sets had transformers. Go figure. Also a lot of Olympic combo sets would share the plate supply and lose volume if the rectifier is weak.

That "Ice -o- Matic" thing probably uses peltier devices for refrigeration.
Audio has what is called stacked B+ To long ago for me to explain. GE also pulled
this crap. A bad audio out can kill the HV.

I think I know what finished that set off. There was some other fault, so the man of the house - the Phantom Twiddler - who hadn’t touched the inside of anything electronic since finishing his national service as a radio operator 20 years previous went on a coil twiddling spree to try and fix it as he “knew what he was doing”, ended up making it worse and calling out that mobile TV repair van, who quoted a price that was too high for the man of the house to be willing to pay!

No, at that (physical) size, that water/ice-cube thing almost certainly uses a Peltier junction, and maybe a self-contained water circulation system like some desktop-class computers have, plus a small fan. I don’t know if a regular A/C compressor and associated tubing would scale down to that size. Maybe it could be used to cool off hot, red-plating vacuum tubes. But that’s just a guess. And shotgun any roaches you have with wax/paper capacitors; roaches LOVE leaky capacitors. 🤣
There are ridiculously small compressors nowadays, some ice machines use the ACXZ14DC-S which is smaller than a soda can
