Dear Mike Brown - Preston Perry | RHETORIC 2015

  • In this piece, Preston Perry approaches social injustice in light of the gospel. He paints a chilly picture as he recounts his own personal experience with the memory of what happened to Mike Brown.
    He also wisely included some empathy for Officer Wilson. This maturity is a good example for the Christian. Preston and his pastor have been holding discussions in Chicago between groups of different races to hopefully bring understanding and ease some of the racial tensions.
    After you've heard the piece, we challenge you to use the power of the Gospel to engage across racial lines and lead not with accusation, but understanding of the pain, hurt and confusion that is spreading - allowing the Love of Christ to help and heal the divides.
    This sensitive and eloquent spoken word dedication is definitely one that will provoke further discussion!
    RHETORIC 2015 was a truly blessed experience. From the high-energy pre-show down through the worship filled altar call, RHETORIC 2015 set records, confronted issues and changed lives! We had another sell out this year, with over 3400 people in the building! Now in case you missed it, you can see what you missed.

    Went to this a couple of weekends ago. This was by far my favorite piece because of the artistry as a whole. You see the background is blue. It doesn't show well in the video, but at about 1:30 you can see there was this singular red light that just circulated the audience and struck us in the eyes for about 20 seconds. Really just pure and simple brilliance of intertwining the red and blue which represents the cops to set the tone of the poem for those of us who are more visual people. I love it!!

    Listening to this, you would think Mike Brown was targeted because of his race. But after in-depth local and federal investigations (overseen by a host of black individuals, btw) the conclusion was: race had nothing to do with it. It is a tragedy this man was handcuffed unjustly, I just wish this poem had picked a better example to compare to. Mike Brown isn't it.

    Hi Preston, i love this piece; but i loved what you and your wife performed better as well as the piece you did on the GODSHIP of JESUS CHRIST. The truth of the matter is, as poets, we ought to project more of the JESUS CHRIST as GOD subject especially in this end-time where a great many people spew impiety on the GODSHIP of CHRIST. More evangelical poems need to be enforced for people to wake up to the reality of this end-time. I can see into the realms of the spirit, and i could tell you of a truth, we think we are doing much as Christians, but we've done nothing. A wonderful platform such as P4CM, is to bring up a poetry season totally meant for poems aimed at winning the lost. That's why i love my man Evangelist Chris Webb. He is doing well. i believe all other poets and P4CM will put this subject of the GODSHIP of JESUS CHRIST into effect. I am done Amen (From Ghana-West Africa)

      The one he did with the wife was spot on, with regards to the subject of the "fall". I am a gospel poet too, and i can tell you of a fact, when people some together as gathered dust, they need the breath of life to be infused in their system; especially when the world has a problem with the GODSHIP of CHRIST. I've had the chance of performing to a greater audience, and to be honest, its not about exciting the ears than speaking the raw truth that JESUS CHRIST is GOD. Medaa se

    Loved this poem until Preston mentioned God being just in this situation. I get his reason for saying so but can we honestly say God is dealing justly with Black men in America right now? I am a Christian just wondering how God has dealt justly with any of the Black men and women killed by cops and their family.
    If you're angry about it be angry. I feel like this poem is like a sermon at a funeral where the preacher didn't know the deceased but was hired and had to prepare something to help the family greed. I am tired of pacifiers in the church.

      My love, plz read Psalm 73. ---"The Tragedy of the Wicked, and the Blessedness of Trust in God"---Truly God is good to Israel,
      To such as are pure in heart.
      2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;
      My steps had nearly slipped.
      3 For I was envious of the boastful,
      When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.4 For there are no pangs in their death,
      But their strength is firm.
      5 They are not in trouble as other men,
      Nor are they plagued like other men.
      6 Therefore pride serves as their necklace;
      Violence covers them like a garment.
      7 Their eyes bulge[a] with abundance;
      They have more than heart could wish.
      8 They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression;
      They speak loftily.
      9 They set their mouth against the heavens,
      And their tongue walks through the earth.10 Therefore his people return here,
      And waters of a full cup are drained by them.
      11 And they say, “How does God know?
      And is there knowledge in the Most High?”
      12 Behold, these are the ungodly,
      Who are always at ease;
      They increase in riches.
      13 Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain,
      And washed my hands in innocence.
      14 For all day long I have been plagued,
      And chastened every morning.15 If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
      Behold, I would have been untrue to the generation of Your children.
      16 When I thought how to understand this,
      It was too painful for me-
      17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God;
      Then I understood their end.18 Surely You set them in slippery places;
      You cast them down to destruction.
      19 Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment!
      They are utterly consumed with terrors.
      20 As a dream when one awakes,
      So, Lord, when You awake,
      You shall despise their image.21 Thus my heart was grieved,
      And I was vexed in my mind.
      22 I was so foolish and ignorant;
      I was like a beast before You.
      23 Nevertheless I am continually with You;
      You hold me by my right hand.
      24 You will guide me with Your counsel,
      And afterward receive me to glory.25 Whom have I in heaven but You?
      And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
      26 My flesh and my heart fail;
      But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.27 For indeed, those who are far from You shall perish;
      You have destroyed all those who desert You for harlotry.
      28 But it is good for me to draw near to God;
      I have put my trust in the Lord GOD,
      That I may declare all Your works.---These tragedies are HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE, of course. It's hard, I struggle with this too on most days. But BELIEVE that JUSTICE WILL be served. God IS just, always and forever. Even though it hurts, badly, it will all be made right one day. Pain will turn into glory. (Read Reveleation 21:1-7). God help us on this journey called life xx

      Tammie Michelle Just because America is done with the story, doesnt mean God is. He used Sauk to punish the Amalekites for crimes they comitted against the Israel when they exited Egypt. God gives us all a season to repent before he punishes. He promised that VENGANCE is HIS not ours. We have to choose forgiveness so that we can be blessed and free from rage. But God is not done yet. He sees....period!
