Being prepared and thinking ahead can really go along way when wanting a sleeve. Let me know what tips you agree with the most AND if i missed any other important tips you may have 👊
Hit the nail on the head!
Good advice I am in the early stages of planning and this has definitely pushed me in the right direction. Do you have any advice on finding reference images ???
Google, Instagram and Pinterest are great places 👊🏼
JustINKD ok so what I have been doing. I’ll just have to dig deeper I guess haha thanks.
Trust your artist was the hardest one for me. I'm an artist myself, I designed my sleeve, took me a whole year and it was so hard to hand it over to the guy and let him do his thing without questioning everything. He knocked it out the park imo though, just a couple of hours left to go, soon as lockdown's over we're going to finish it, I CANNOT WAIT!
Yeah it's definitely a hard part especially when you have such a set design you've made but like you I've given my trust in my artist and they just knock it of the park. And that's awesome! Would love to see the finished product 👌🏼👌🏼
@@justinkd Cool yeah I'll definitely upload something and let you know!
Love your sleeves, it's always amazing to see the work of a master. It's all great but those rays of light at the top of your right arm are a superb subtle detail, world class. I have my sleeve on my left and maybe 3/4 on the right. On the right I went with a couple of newer artists, one had only been working 3 years but I loved her work and took a chance on her. Very happy so far!
Finding neotraditional in my area was pretty difficult. But this guy is spot on. The best pieces I’ve ever gotten are when I give perimeters on what I want (with reference photos) then letting the artist have the rest of the artistic freedom. It’s why my work looks as good as it does.
Do your research! Then trusting your artist will come easier because you know you’ve done all the hard work to find them and checking their work.
Awesome tips! Another great video man. Have a great day and stay safe.
Awesome tips!! Very concise and helpful! Thank you!!
Great advice bro. I’ve just had my first sleeve finished. Had two different artists but with a Celtic theme. Love it and feel more inked up than with a half sleeve.
That's awesome bro, but Now it's time to get that other arm done 😉 when you have both arms done that's when you really feel tatted. But also it's a great feeling
Great tips brother I'm thinking about getting my first tattoo after all this quarentine stuff is over. And Ima start building a sleeve 🤟🏻🤟🏻
Do it 👊🏼and if you know you're going down that sleeve road then definitely give it some good thought. Sleeves will look their absolute best when thought about for idead, how the planning and layout will go and working with the right artist. You're in a good spot, and can have an awesome sleeve 👌🏼
@@justinkd thank you brother👍🏻
Well, did you ever get your first tattoo?
This is a great video! So well done! Mad probs, Justin.
Thank you So much Michael 👊🏼
Good tips bro...i'm almost done with my second sleeve think goodness
4:30 well for me i have i got my daughter on my right inner forearm but this was my first tattoo at 18 and i did not know what i wanted 12 years later wasnt thinking if i wanted a sleeve or not but now i do my artist will have to go around that when i get my first sleeve
Great Video as always man!
I can totally relate to the fact of not putting small tattoos in your arms knowing you'll be getting a sleeve. Now I have like 10 tattoos all over the body except the arms because I want to get a sleeve eventually. It's starting to look a bit unbalanced now. Hahah.
But I think the preparation is worth more for a sleeve because it'll be the first thing anyone will notice once you get it.
I think it's time to get that sleeve now too and because you've thought ahead it's going to be an awesome sleeve 👌🏼👌🏼
I definitely agree with point number 4. I think it's important to get a tattoo for yourself not for other people. An opinion from others is fine, but ultimately it's your body and your money. I'm looking forward to seeing your leg sleeve man! 👌🏽
Now I barely mention my ideas to anyone. I just get what I want without hearing opinions, they're Such an easy thing to have you second guessing. And can't wait either! Going to be a great sleeve in the making. 👌🏼👊🏼
That color realism blew my mind
Hey dude, love your content, thanks for the commitment, it really helps tattoo virgins like me! :D
I'm currently planning to get a full sleeve in a fineline/traditional kinda patchworky style. My desired artist sits pretty far away so I definetly have to get the whole arm done within 1 trip (about 7 days). Now I just wanted to ask you for your experience so far, since from what I saw you had some pretty huge sessions. Of course pain tollerance is different and so on, but how about the healing process or getting an infection? Isn't it very hard for the body to heal such a big surface, have you felt sick or something like that? And most important, would you do it/again?
Kind regards :)
Can't wait for the next tattoo and Loving the new background
Glad you noticed and like the new setup
Any recommendations on a wrap around the arm tattoo? What kind of artist to look for with this style?
I'm getting a LoTR half sleeve next month. With Gandalf striding across a map of Middle Earth and maybe with Treebeard jn the background. Cannot wait
Can’t wait for the new ink bro!
Neither can I 👊🏼
I broke my arm in Sept of 2019. Shattered all three bones. Multiple surgeries. Just looking to get inked to cover up the scar. This is a great help. Thanks!
Damn sorry to hear! Hopefully you’re able to get a dope ass piece that covers all the scars up👊🏼
Justin, I'm from Barcelona, I don't understand much English, but I liked your tips and tattoos. Congratulations on your channel
Thank you so much Ruben! 🙏🏼

Oooo when I saw the upload I thought it was a new tat!🤣
But I don’t mind, this video was another great one✌🏽
- also, do u have any socials? Like Instagram?
LMAO I know you're dying for it and all I can say is soon 😉 and yeah I have an ig page where I post and mostly respond to dms @justinkd_tatts
Of course bro!🤣- and cool, let me check it out
Do you know if most artists accept payment in increments or is it normally expected to pay in one payment?
I’ve been looking for the right artist for months. I can’t seem to find a black and gray specialist in Wisconsin that I feel a connection with.
looked around- search: tatsbytaylor , @tattooartchris @dalliselda_
People warned me before getting my first tattoo. They told me once I get the first, I'll want more. I didn't believe them. But now I want more tattoos and I plan on eventually getting sleeves. I plan to get tattoos based on history since I am a major fan of World History.
Yeup! They're definitely addicting and once you get one you'll be getting more. Good idea for a themed sleeve 👌🏼
Tip number 2 is definitely important at first I was going to get tatted at first I thought it was cool after a while I realized that not something I want. definitely love Greek mythology angels demons related tattoos
I have so many ideas that run through my mind. But thankfully because of that tip I've saved myself from acouple that I'd probably regretted already
So guilty of number 4, overthink everything & get so confused.
I have two patch work leg sleeves in progress. One has a nautical theme. The other is kind of a loose collection of classic American Traditional designs. I will be putting them on hold soon to do my right arm sleeve which will also be a Nautical theme. I am doing one piece or two a month to make it more affordable I was initially afraid to have sleeves because of my job, but have figured out a way to keep them discretely covered at work. I have been planning this sleeve for at least 8 or 9 months so I definitely know what I want. Only regret. Before when I had not considered a sleeve I had 4 tattoos that may not exactly for my themes. I like the tattoos just not the placement, because they are high they can stay the themes under them or figure out how to work them in. I will have to great American Traditional Artists in the same ship that will be collaborating on the project.
I feel the pain too with having a tattoo that you love but regret it's placement. But that's what makes us learn for the future and to not make the mistakes again for much better/flowing art
@@justinkd very true. Although I have my right arm sleeve well thought out for months, I'm still not sure about the left. So I should definitely just do one arm at a time--by the time my right arm is finished I should know for certain what I really want on the left. I have a good idea about the left sleeve that will work with what I've already got.
What do you do for a living Justin?
I'm getting a Polynesian sleeve tattoo this year gotta do it for the tribe🤙🏾
Have you done it yet? Having my Polenisian half sleeve in a week, was curious about the experience of others
@@better_man_2.0 I'm getting it in dec
@@darius.k.handley good luck💪
I’m only 14 and I’m watching tattoos videos wow
It's funny - I'm not struggling with the tattoo concept so much as placement - I have 2 open arms - and I go back a forth as to which arm should be sleeved. If anyone had to make this choice, what were your deciding factors?
ive never had a sleeve done (yet ofc👀) but id say, whatever side feels right to you! imagine it on your dominant arm. does it feel more fitting there than your non-dominant? i guess thats what i’d go by if i had no specific side in mind :)
I’m confused, why get it laser removed if you’re just going to cover it up ? Then what’s the point of the laser no disrespect
Because I want to make sure that when I get my next full chest piece, my artist has a nice blank canvas to work with and doesn't have to sacrifice quality, cut corners of jump through hoops to get the tattoo to work because it's in the way
Ok I really like the idea of sleeve tattoos but my only concern is how will in look in let’s say 30 - 40 years because my grandad used to have tattoos but they faded and sort of mixed in on itself (the tattoo was obviously not meant to look like that) and they where blue instead of black, could this be because the artist was bad or do all tattoos do that over time
Tattoos back then and today are totally different in terms of the ink used, machinery, skill set and techniques used. I’d say they’ll hold up a lot better but you’ll still have fading for sure
👏👏👏👏👏
🙏🏼
Can anyone talk about how much thought they put into style and placement of future tattoos when getting the earlier ones to avoid a mismatched look? I'm wondering about whether you limit your options in any way, for example, if I got a colour neo trad sleeve, would that make a black and grey back piece look a bit off?
I believe it would look off but eyy sometimes we have a change of thought/idea and just have to deal with where things are places. That’s why it’s always better to sit on the idea and really think for future work but it’s just something you have to take a chance on
@@justinkd wow Justin, thanks for all the replies, super useful and I really wasn't expecting them. I'd already subbed for your content, but I'd sub again for how you go out of your way like that if I could
Thank you!! I really appreciate the feedback! I try my best to reply to everyone in some way! Shits getting harder As the channel grows Snd gets more comments but I’ll still continue to do my best 👊🏼
Wish me luck bro I’m getting my whole arm done Saturday in one session . I’m just not getting the inside of my bicep done lol .
JHEEZ!! Go big or go home 👊🏼👊🏼 goodluck!! And you'll get it done eventually 😉
He’s a guest artist so I gotta knock it out 😂 do you recommend anything for me to get ready for it ? Cause the artist said we gonna be in there for 8 hours possibly
Lmao damn! 😅 We'll get ready, get a good sleep before, have a big meal and make sure to bring snacks, drinks like Gatorade, movies, music, headphones
Quick update: we finished my whole forearm in like 7-8 hours . We had to reschedule my shoulder because he had to fly out to New Orleans . But he said he’ll come back on the 15 an we’re gonna get the rest of it done
Kelsey McWhorter lmao
I've wanted to start a sleeve on my arm for years. I reeeeeally love the look of patchwork sleeves, so I want to do that with all pieces of my favorite animals. But I'm still trying to get over the anxiety of having visible tattoos and "what is my family gonna think" and all that. Does anyone have any tips for getting over that fear so that I can work towards my goal?
Honestly it all starts with the first one. After that I think it’s easy
@@justinkd Hm, I dunno. My family just found out (purely by accident) about my small wrist tattoo, because I posted something where it was showing and I didn't realize that they would see it. It went pretty well, but I think they would have a stronger or more extreme reaction to a big tattoo. Which I did just get, lol. I just got my whole shin done a few weeks ago, but I specifically chose my shin so that I could just wear pants and hide it from them. So I feel like they don't necessarily care about small tattoos, but I feel like they'll judge me more for getting a huge image.
Better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission. Remember that
@@justinkd That's true.
3 Grand and up..... Well, I do agree that you don't want to go "cheap" - but cost is so highly subjective and dependent on a variety of factors, such as the economy of where you're at, artist, etc. My sleeve, which I love and believe is pretty dang good, was less than 2K all said and done. I would say that's in part due to having a good relationship with my artist, the economy of the area, and the norms of the industry in that region.
All very true points 👌🏼
You plan on getting any neck or hand tattoos?
Neck I'm like 90% not going to get but hands are a big maybe and is something I'll probably get after my legs, chest and back are done
I want tattoos on my arms, but I don't need everything to connect. I just want stuff.
I have a small samurai on my wrist but I want a Greek theme sleeve would that samurai ruin my sleeve?
It would look alittle out of place since you’re taking two different themes BUT do what you want and don’t let it effect your goal of a sleeve. There are many ways you can incorporate it all to flow without looking out of place 🔥👊🏼
@@justinkd thanks for the reply. I’ll figure something out
Idk where you located, and you saying to trust your artist.. just to you know here in New York tattoo artist are little hard to work with because they said they work with your ideas and what you like and they understand what you want And at the end they do the piece they want to and they do it there own style, when you tell them that’s not the way you wanted because doesn’t look as what ya talk they says the view of the tattoo depends of the perspective side you look at it.
Damn thts a different way to go about it
