I also re-played The Ezio Trilogy this year like I do almost every year and listening to your thoughts on it in this video reminds me of why I subbed to your channel all those years ago and why I stuck around even though you don't do AC content anymore. Brotherhood is my favorite in the series even though it's story doesn't hit as hard as maybe II or Revelations but I feel Cesare is the best AC antagonist along side Al-Mualim from AC1 but also from a level design perspective, Brotherhood is untouchable. The memory where you free Caterina Sforza from the Castel Sant'angelo is one of the funnest missions I've played in any video game and Leonardo's War Machine Memories are so incredibly designed as well. Another game that's really made my 2024 was re-visiting Far Cry 3 after many years of not playing it and my god I forgot how brilliant it is. To this day, there's not a single video game that does Ludonarrative Harmony better than Far Cry 3, seeing Jason's descent into madness and him turning into the monster he's trying so hard to avoid but realizing he needs to embrace that side of himself in order to find the strength to save his friends is so damn chilling and seeing it not only from a narrative perspective but also from a gameplay perspective with changes in the tiniest details like Jason being super grossed out skinning animals to later in the game just grunting through it like it's nothing or the very subtle evolution of his Takedown Animations is just the most genius game design and it's insane to me that other devs and studios don't use this game as a Case Study on how to make super compelling narrative driven games.
God metaphor is a fucking MASTERPIECE. Seeing gameplay and hearing the music gives me goosebumps. Quite honestly shot up to like my favorite game of all time
Bloodborne is my all time favourite game. Played and replayed, platinum, etc. I did not realise you could counter the shark-men charge move. Thank you for this
Looking forward to your vids in 2025 man, a more in depth AC2 Retrospective, this is my ‘make a wish’ thank you! 2024 for me was mainly Mass Effect 2+3, Uncharted1234, Assassins Creed 2, 3, Black Flag, Rogue (certain videos planned 😉), Total War Medieval 2, Batman Arkham Origins, Skyrim, Star Wars Outlaws (unfortunately) and the new Hitman Trilogy. Doom Eternal + Fallout 4 got on game pass so thought I would try them out. Maybe not for me 😂
16:36 I love seeing P3 get its flowers for being what it is at its truest form. Coming off of losing someone in my life and not know what to do properly only to just experience P3R because I secluded myself away was rattling and truly awakening. A perfect game at the perfect time, still love hearing how much you appreciate the game!
Great to see someone enjoying a year playing some older titles. I've severe FOMO and haven't been able to stop buying new game after new game the last couple of years. I've said no more now and I'm going to focus on my backlog. I'll wait for Birthdays/ Christmas for any kind of new game. Which is going to be incredibly hard with KCD2 this year! Currently sucked into the world of Metaphor which is absolutely incredible.
I need to replay all the AC games again. And I replayed Cyberpunk 2077 this year as well with the dlc. I loved it at launch but saw it's flaws but to see it at its perfection made me so happy.
Rebirth is being incredibly “emotionally honest”. It just isn’t being honest with its audience about its technical narrative, because it has its cards close to its chest for part 3.
Experiencing Dark Souls / Soulslikes in general -- if it becomes something you can find the methodical, meditative pleasure in progressing through -- really changes a player, I feel. It's been really cool to see your documented, uploaded journey through these games. Enshrouded I'm loving even as I type this comment on a second monitor, it's been a blast in co-op especially, which has been a surprise to me because I don't typically like Survival games that much. V Rising is another one I can whole-heartedly recommend to anyone, if you happen to enjoy the more combat-focused, RPG/progression-heavy vibe of Enshrouded. I compare the two games in my head very often. I'm not sure if you've already played Lies of P, but I think you're more than ready for it. It was my game of the year the year it came out, easily one of my favorite games of all time with a story I found beautiful, and the DLC for it is coming sometime Q1 2025 so now's a good time to play (or even revisit it, if you already have).
I've never been too crazy for JRPGs but you make a good case for Metaphor: ReFantazio now I can understand why people are so big on that game and games alike, Thank you LazerzZ as always
another beautiful and insightful watch James. I really take interest in the way you critically analyse videogames and show the true depth of their design. Also, I have recently been playing bulletstorm which was one of my favourite games I have played this year, have you given it a shot before? I highly recommend it.
I also played Cyberpunk for the first time this year. The initial release came out on my birthday in 2020 and I was so excited…..until I saw what state the game was in. Then I waited. I was going to jump in around 2022 after the game had been patched a bit and then….they announced Phantom Liberty. So I waited. Until this last summer and had a great time with it.
This year I played through all the Uncharted games for the first time as well as both Horizon games. Had an absolute blast. The quality of Uncharted 4 as an allround game blew me away, it is making me consider to play the last of us, which I never really had any interest in since I dont like anything with zombie apocalypse as a setting. I played Horizon for the first time because of discovering how special its story was from your first video on Zero Dawn. It was really cool getting to experience that firsthand, but getting to play Forbidden West blind was an even bigger treat. Such a unique world and story even though you feel that they were definitely inspired by the original ACs.
I remember every time you mentioned Cyberpunk, you never wanted to play it and said it would always be a shit game, I adore that you finally realized how beautiful it is. I can't wait for a video diving into it ^_^
Hey James huge fan of your, so happy you're exploring other games and genres especially you're into souls like now I would highly highly hiiiiiighly recommend please play Lies of P and if you have more times Elden Ring these two games are top tier experience in terms of art, lore, world design, combat, player's freedom and obviously boss fights, would love to see if you make reviews on them I just wanna mention which games made my 2024: - black myth wukong personal game of the year and after years I had this kinda experience and attachment with world - lies of P masterpiece simply top tier game - GOW ragnarok and DLC amazing time - beloved AC replays of unity odyssey and syndicate - Elden Ring I m still not done with this thing it's behemoth of game but idk I don't wanna stop playing this thing - witcher 3 I would say I didn't like overall game as much as people claimed regardless nice time overall
Around 7:45. Agree. I think any type of game can be for anyone, but it also depends on the game. For example I like the concept of hero shooters, but I don't ever want to play one, because they don't really offer me anything that would drag me in. Like the only hero shooter I was interested in was Overwatch 2, but that was for the singleplayer content... but we all know where that went... But I like the idea of a hero shooter game, but in my opinion their isnt one that is made where I would get what I want from it.
Mine were Sonic X Shadow Generations, Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls Online. SxS Gens was near perfect, a remaster of a beyond excellent game and the addition of an even better game. Heartwarming narrative, embracing Battle, Shadow 05, Heroes, Forces and 06 (yes yes YES) in that meaningful way, truly epic experience. Fallout 76 was my 5th Fallout game (had played F1, Tactics, Shelter and Pinball) and WOW what a positive experience it was. One of the best maps ever created, gorgeous, exemplary world building and lore, brilliant OST, the C.A.M.P. system was so fun, one of the best communities I've ever seen, I had an absolute blast. I wasn't a huge fan of F1 and Tactics and the other 2 weren't notable experiences (they were great tho) so F76 was my first completely positive experience with Fallout. Took me around 280 hours but I 100%ed. And then TESO, wawa weewa, TESO. My favorite MMO of all time, 500 hours into it as we speak and nowhere near done, completed the Ebonheart Pact campaign, the first 2 Zones of the Aldmeri Dominion and now finishing the Daggerfall Covenant campaign (entering the final Zone now). Breathtaking storylines, fantastic presentation, banger OST, I bought the Water's Edge villa and decorating it was so fun, every single element of TESO I only have psoitive thoughts of. These 3 games made my 2024.
Nice to see Cyberpunk make the list this year and be getting such high praise, glad I waited to jump in until all the fixes were out and the dlc was releasing. Since I finished it I've had an urge to jump right back into Night City. I still need to get to Metaphor but that'll be a 2025 game now. I wish I'd had more time in 2024 to get to play more indie titles as well but my list is pretty full of them now, and growing since I'll be adding Rain World, so maybe I'll whittle them down in 2025. Some games I did get to in 2024 and absolutely loved were the Life is Strange series, the Plague Tale games, Chained Echoes, Lies of P, Kingdom Come Deliverance which absolutely absorbed my time, and my personal game of the year Astro Bot. I went back and watched your old Ac retrospectives earlier in the year so I'm looking forward to seeing how you decide to improve on them.
The recent games that I have played this year was Rebirth (not good) and Veilguard (also not good). I played FF16 for the first time and I adore that game. I played the Evil Within 2 and loved it. I started to play the first Evil Within but I have some issues with it. The rest of the years I have been mostly playing older games. I have spent less money on games this year than in years prior because I just did not care much for anything new.
My 2024 was spending time with Red Dead Redemption 2, Metro Exodus, Control, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, God of War, Uncharted 4, and most recently Cyberpunk 2077
14:45 honestly I disagree completely, to me every atlus game has been better than the previous one, in persona 3's case, I understand why someone would prefer its story more than the newer games, but the game feels empty simply because it was a prototype for persona 4 and 5, 50 hours of grinding in tartarus and a lack of activities to do bring this game down, where's persona 4 and 5 didn't have these problems (I still like persona 3 though don't get me wrong it's a great game)
19:21 hell yes even though I prefer witcher 3 more as a game, phantom liberty is the best thing cdpr has ever made, it's everything I wanted cyberpunk 2077 to be
Has to be recency bias. As someone who first played all the Personas and SMTs this year, and therefore had neither nostalgia nor bias for any of them, my impression is the same as yours. They got better at world building, character, and the various game mechanics with every release.
@@sonofwotan Exactly, like I do understand why someone would prefer P3's story and characters more, but saying P5 is one of the worst atlus games is wild to me, even if you're not a fan of the story or whatever, the game is an improvement in almost every other way, it's a better "videogame" objectively.
Tbh i love dark souls 2 i always thought the gate for tha game feels so forced its like everyone only hates on it cos uts something you're supposed to do cos everyone does ut even people who haven't played it
Love that this is gonna be a yearly tradition. Great video, man! This year, I played NO new games (outside of one that came out in 2023) lol, but I played more than I have in previous years. Some of my favorites this year were: Hi-Fi Rush, RDR2, Alan Wake, Control, Ghost of Tsushima, Bully, Spyro Reignited, Firewatch, Uncharted 1 and 2, and Gris. Here’s my novel explaining why lol. Hi-Fi Rush: At the beginning of the year, I played Hi-Fi Rush, which is just so much damn fun. It gives me the feeling of a campy anime with a great art style, a fun rock music-based soundtrack, and immensely charming characters. I’m so relieved Tango Gameworks was bought as they have confirmed they will be working on a sequel, which I definitely will be playing. Red Dead Redemption 2: I FINALLY played Red Dead Redemption 2 and…holy shit. I loved the first Red Dead Redemption, but when 2 came out, I felt very overwhelmed by the massive open world and just couldn’t get into it at first. I’ve picked it up several times since then, but this year I finally committed to playing it and I absolutely fell in love. I can’t believe it took me literally YEARS to come around to it, but I’m glad I finally did. Alan Wake and Control: After your recommendations from last year's video, I played Alan Wake and Control back to back. This universe that Remedy has created is so fascinating and I cannot wait to dive further in. I recently purchased Alan Wake 2 and I am beyond excited to dive in. Ghost of Tsushima: After a friend bullied me into playing it, I played Ghost of Tsushima for the first time! This is one of the most gorgeous games I’ve ever played, with such simple, yet satisfying combat. While the story of Jin shedding his traditions is really cool, the thing that hooked me the most was the relationship between Jin and his Uncle. Even with Shimura being kind of a dick for the most part, I was very invested to see where he and Jin went. Can’t wait for Ghost of Yotei. Hopefully they fix the tedious open world lol. Bully: Scholarship Edition: After playing RDR2, I was looking into other Rockstar games I had never played and I picked up Bully: Scholarship Edition. This game is so silly and so fun. It sure as shit would never get made today (for probably some good reasons), but I love it for what it is, and I had a ton of fun with it. Fingers crossed for Bully 2! Spyro: Reignited: This year I replayed Spyro the Dragon and played Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage for the first time (Reignited). I love Spyro. I have since I was a kid and it’s one of those comfort franchises that I love coming back to, because they bring me back to simpler times. Firewatch: On a whim, I downloaded Firewatch, because I was in the mood for a short game and boy I was not ready for it. I went in completely blind, and even though it’s not a “horror game” per se, it made me feel very uneasy in the best way possible and it had a great story that could have easily been a movie or a mini series. Uncharted 1 and 2: I saw the release trailer for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and thought to myself “nah I’m good”, but it did put me in the mood for an adventure game, so I went with Uncharted lol! I played these two back to back and had a ton of fun! They’re not deep by any means, but what hooked me in was the characters. Nate, Elena, and Sully are such enjoyable protagonists and these games give me such strong Indiana Jones and The Mummy vibes. I plan on playing the rest soon and I’m even more excited, especially hearing your take on 3 and 4. Gris: This game, artistically and thematically, is beautiful. It may be simple, but it's astonishing in the way that it explores grief, emotional healing, and mental challenges while delivering a deeply relaxing and meditative experience. I recommend playing it in one sitting. I know this comment is way too long, but, it's a Saturday and I had a lot of free time this morning lol. Great video as always! Good luck with the move!
i haven’t even watched the vid yet but i played cyberpunk for the first time this year and it was absolutely incredible im glad i put it off until it was complete
So your job is to play games and make videos about them, and this video is titled games that made your year, but is about games that you didn't even make videos about? How were they so important that they "made your year" if you never even mentioned them until now?

Hi-Fi Rush, RDR2, Alan Wake, Control, Ghost of Tsushima, Bully, Spyro Reignited, Firewatch, Uncharted 1 and 2, and Gris. Here’s my novel explaining why lol.
Hi-Fi Rush:
At the beginning of the year, I played Hi-Fi Rush, which is just so much damn fun. It gives me the feeling of a campy anime with a great art style, a fun rock music-based soundtrack, and immensely charming characters. I’m so relieved Tango Gameworks was bought as they have confirmed they will be working on a sequel, which I definitely will be playing.
Red Dead Redemption 2:
I FINALLY played Red Dead Redemption 2 and…holy shit.
Alan Wake and Control:
After your recommendations from last year's video, I played Alan Wake and Control back to back. This universe that Remedy has created is so fascinating and I cannot wait to dive further in. I recently purchased Alan Wake 2 and I am beyond excited to dive in.
Ghost of Tsushima:
After a friend bullied me into playing it, I played Ghost of Tsushima for the first time!
Bully: Scholarship Edition:
After playing RDR2, I was looking into other Rockstar games I had never played and I picked up Bully: Scholarship Edition. This game is so silly and so fun. It sure as shit would never get made today (for probably some good reasons), but I love it for what it is, and I had a ton of fun with it. Fingers crossed for Bully 2!
Spyro: Reignited:
This year I replayed Spyro the Dragon and played Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage for the first time (Reignited). I love Spyro. I have since I was a kid and it’s one of those comfort franchises that I love coming back to, because they bring me back to simpler times.
Firewatch:
On a whim, I downloaded Firewatch, because I was in the mood for a short game and boy I was not ready for it. I went in completely blind, and even though it’s not a “horror game” per se, it made me feel very uneasy in the best way possible and it had a great story that could have easily been a movie or a mini series.
Uncharted 1 and 2:
I saw the release trailer for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and thought to myself “nah I’m good”, but it did put me in the mood for an adventure game, so I went with Uncharted lol!
Gris:
This game, artistically and thematically, is beautiful.
If you think P3 Reload is good imagine when you learn that Reload is a downgrade to the original P3FES

TW3 >>>> Cyberpunk.
🙌🏿🔥🫡
Uncharted is better than tomb raider. Coz it’s consistent and immersive 😀
story and characters yes, gameplay I wouldn't say so
So your job is to play games and make videos about them, and this video is titled games that made your year, but is about games that you didn't even make videos about? How were they so important that they "made your year" if you never even mentioned them until now?
I also played Cyberpunk for the first time this year. The initial release came out on my birthday in 2020 and I was so excited…..until I saw what state the game was in. Then I waited. I was going to jump in around 2022 after the game had been patched a bit and then….they announced Phantom Liberty. So I waited. Until this last summer and had a great time with it.
