  • U.S. Marine Cpl. Michael Meyer, 23, developed a severe respiratory infection that nearly took his life in March 2012. Meyer was transported from U.S. Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan to Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii while connected to an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) system that does the work of the heart and lungs in order to allow a patient's lungs and heart to "rest" and heal. Meyer's case was the first time in the western Pacific that an ECMO transfer had been done with an adult patient, and the 10-hour flight from Okinawa to Hawaii was the longest adult ECMO transport in history.
One week after arriving at Tripler in Hawaii, Meyer was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City--one of a small number of medical centers in the United States with the experience and expertise to provide long-term ECMO care for adults. I was the ccatt RN on this transport and Michael was seen promptly in Japan. When his condition worsened, we flew from Hawaii with 14 health care workers ranging from CV surgeons to ICU intensivists and pulmonologists. We brought our own ECMO setup and flew him from Japan to Hawaii, then from Hawaii to Iowa.

He was lucky. What also helped was that he was a service man. Im sorry but other people i wont say who would have been let go.

This bought me to tears.. ECMO saved my life just under 10 years ago after a motorcycle crash which left me with multiple injuries the main one being a puncturing of my left lung when one of 5 broken ribs went through the lung.. my right lung was also very badly bruised.. I am very grateful to all of the emergency services and the staff at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester England UK..

I feel that all service men and women ,along with their families deserve nothing more than the upmost respect for all of their sacrifices for America. Please take a minute whenever you see a service man or woman in public to thank them for their service -it’ll make you feel good and respect them highly for their sacrifices.

I am proud to say that Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana IL has the ECMO. I was in the ER last night with my daughter when they brought in a trauma that they eventually put on ECMO. This gentleman was found unresponsive in 24 degree weather and hypothermia had set in.

How long was this marine sick before being seen by a dr. Just what did it take for one of our men serving our country ro receive the medical treatment he so badly needed?
