  • An Active Directory server can be a great addition to your lab environment. It can provide centralized user, group, DNS, Certificate Authority, and DHCP services. While many may not "need" this in a "LAB" environment, it is always good experience to use corporate/enterprise types of tooling when setting up a Lab environment. Unfortunately, not everyone has the funds available to get Microsoft Licenses so this video highlights Zentyal Development Edition by walking you through a basic installation and configuration. By the end of this 20~ish minute video, we will have an Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Linux server configured to provide the following functionality:
    - Active Directory (AD) Domain Controller
    - - AD Test groups
    -- AD Test users
    - DNS Server
    - Certificate Authority
I also show how to install a custom private CA (Certificate Authority) cert in the Chromium browser on my Fedora 35 KDE VM.

Great video! Affirms the steps I used.
I’ve never been able to setup an additional domain controller, DNS and DHCP server for the purposes of resiliency in a satisfactory way. Any chance of a follow-up video to cover that?

    I love this Server! 😍

Happy to hear that! It does indeed make a great server for a home lab or small-medium business from what I can tell. My use has been pretty limited - ie, just the functionality I show in the video... but I have been using it for a few years now.

Thanks, for the video. Can you please make a video on how to join dns with a mail server.

Not totally sure what you mean here: "how to join DNS with a mail server" -- My CyberPanel series covers mail server config and discusses briefly the DNS that is configured as part of CyberPanel as well as setting up the necessary record(s) in Google Domains.

This was great thank you! I'm trying to build a home lab I could remote to from outside of the Network(home). Still got a journeys to go before I get in that level. Any tips would be great.

Hello @eddyalamo4983, You're referencing UA-cam tutorials so you're already off to a good start! There are many youtubers that have been publishing much longer than me with a variety of safe recommendations for remote access. Anything from using a Wireguard VPN to access your home infrastructure to tunneling through cloudflare. There's plenty to learn in this area and can help with your professional career as you become more familiar with the various technologies available. If you're not already, I would also suggest getting in Reddit and joining the homelab and selfhosting subs there. There are always some great tools/tutorials being shared there that can help you learn tons.

so far I have no luck to make zentyal running. Following your method and running Ubuntu on top of proxmox. Everytime after installation, zentyal will stuck on webmin save and I will also lose all connection to the outside world. Can we get some help?

I don't have any experience with Proxmox so I have no idea what could be causing that. I know that many home labbers run Proxmox, but can't recall one specifically running Zentyal on Proxmox. As you saw in my video, I didn't have any such troubles with it on my VMware ESXi server. The one thing that does come to mind though - did you use Ubuntu 20.04 or 22.04 as your starting point? If 22.04, then that may be your problem as Zentyal 7.x is only confirmed for 20.04 according to what I've seen in their communities.

What resources are you throwing at it? Mine was pretty bad until I added 4gb ram and 4cpu. With 100gb storage.

@@eddysplosion my Zentyal has been running fine with 2 CPU and 4GB…. I recentydropped it down to single CPU and didn’t see any noticeable degradation. My use case and traffic are minimal so your results may vary. 4CPU (at least under VMware) is certainly overkill for a home network from what I’ve experienced.

can i use this on linux mint? thanks

I’m not confident in suggesting or trying that. Zentyal was only developed to work with Ubuntu 20.04, they’re really behind/slow to update to CURRENT releases of Ubuntu. Due to that, I wouldn’t waste time or effort trying it on another distribution.

I have no idea, you'd have to dig around Zentyal's documentation/community to find out...

Does it also work in Fedora OS?

Not that I'm aware of, this is an Ubuntu based appliance with the ability to install to Ubuntu. You could still have Fedora based clients connect to it and/or authenticate against it though.
